Enseda Shipbuilding & Surviving the Petrobras Crisis

Enseada Shipbuilding was established to build deepwater drillships for Petrobras. Seventy percent of the company is owned by a consortium composed of Brazilian companies, Odebrecht (50 percent), OAS (25 percent), UTC (25 percent), with the remaining 30 percent belonging to Japanese shipbuilding giant, Kawasaki Heavy Industry (KHI). With all the Brazilian shareholders involved in the Car Wash “Lava Jato” operation, investigating corruption and embezzlement schemes with Petrobras, Kawasaki is a key partner, as is it not only responsible for technology transfer and providing professional training for the local workforce and operational consultancy in several areas within the shipbuilding process, as it also offers credibility to the shipyard.

Cuban Port Eyes Pact with Panama Canal expansion

The Port of Mariel, Cuba, aims to become the best choice transshipment in the region from the Panama Canal expansion. According to the Mariel terminal sources, "The port has possibility to connect with everyone from the Panama Canal expansion" and its geographical position "facilitates the export to the Caribbean and to the East Coast American production that takes place in special development zone. The commercial director of the container terminal in Mariel, Marcelo Lluveras, stressed the importance of expanding the Panama waterway and the opportunity for all ports that have the conditions created. OSX: Full Speed Ahead on Mammoth Shipyard Project

OSX: $1.3B Financing for its Açu Shipbuilding Unit

The Brazillian shipbuilding endeavor received a significant financial injection, as OSX Construção Naval entered into contracts with lending agents BNDES – National Development Bank and CEF - Caixa Econômica Federal for financing with resources from the FMM - Merchant Marine Fund, in the approximate amount of $700m  each, totaling approximately $1.3b. Transpetro Inks Orders Tankers

Transpetro, a unit of Brazil's state-run oil firm Petroleo Brasileiro SA, signed contracts worth $866m for the construction of nine new oil tankers. The Rio Naval consortium will build five Aframax tankers for $517m, and four Panamax oil tankers for $349 million , Petrobras said. The vessels are to join Transpetro's fleet between 2009 and 2011, and are part of a $2.48b program to buy 26 new oil vessels in an initial phase. The first phase will create 11,000 direct jobs in Rio de Janeiro state alone, Petrobras said. The shipbuilding program is financed by Brazil's National Development Bank and aims to bring down Petrobras' costs for chartering ships and to revitalize Brazil's once-flourishing shipbuilding industry. Petrobras said it plans later to raise the number of new oil vessels to 42.

Petrobras Unit to Spend $1.2B on Tankers

The transportation unit of Brazil's state oil company Petrobras said Wednesday that it will pay $1.2b to build 10 oil tankers. Brazil's National Development Bank will finance the shipbuilding project with $1.16m, the press office of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said in a statement earlier Wednesday. Silva and Petrobras Chief Executive Sergio Gabrielli signed the deal at the port of Suape in the northeastern state of Pernambuco. The financing is the largest ever by the development bank for Brazil's once-flourishing shipbuilding industry, which the government is trying to revive. The 10 Suezmax tankers will be built by the Atlantico Sul consortium, composed of construction companies Andrade Gutierrez, Camargo Correa, Queiroz Galvao and Aker Promar.

Brazil To Dispense $100M To Shipping Companies

Brazil's government will reportedly divide $100 million in aid among the country's shipping companies to help Brazil's merchant shipping companies pay off commercial debts and moneys owed to Brazil's National Development Bank (BNDES).
