Maersk Line Scale Up Innovative Smart Reefers in India

In the past one year, Maersk Line, the global containerized division of the Maersk Group has enabled movement of multiple consignments of complex cargo out of India successfully, said a press release. Due to its global presence and network, the exporter network of India has been able to successfully reach out to newer geographies. Commenting on the achievement, recently appointed Managing Director for Maersk Line (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives and Bhutan), Steve Felder said, ”In the past 18 months or so, we have expanded our horizon in various new commodity categories. Intermodal Terminal to Come Up in Uttar Pradesh

Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) will construct Intermodal Terminal at Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur and will be linked to both National Waterways-I (NW-1) or river Ganga and National Highway-19 - connecting Ghazipur to Patna - and help in movement of cargo, with options for both land and water transportation. Union Minister for Shipping Nitin Gadkari, will lay the foundation stone for an Intermodal Terminal at Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh today (25 January). The intermodal terminal at Ghazipur will have linkage to both NW-I or River Ganga and NH-19 which is just 650 metres away. NH19 links Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh with Patna in Bihar.

Great Ships of 2016: Milos

Since it started publishing in 1939, Maritime Reporter & Engineering News has recognized excellence in ship construction. Milos is the first vessel in a series of two Suezmax Crude Oil Tanker, built by SungDong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for Kyklades Maritime Corporation. The vessel is built under the survey of Lloyd’s Register and designed in accordance with IACS Common Structure Rule(CSR). The vessel features a double side skin and has a flush deck, bulbous bow, transom stern, open water type stern frame, semi-balanced rudder and single propeller driven by a slow speed diesel engine.

DNV GL Awards AIP for HMD’s Feeder Design

Today at the SMM trade fair in Hamburg, DNV GL presented Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) with an Approval in Principle (AIP) recognizing the technical feasibility of the new Con-Green 2000 vessel design under the new DNV GL rules. The Con-Green 2000 project brought together partners HMD, MAN Diesel & Turbo, Becker Marine Systems and DNV GL to develop a highly efficient, reliable and economic feeder design. Feeder vessels are the unsung heroes of the container market and have become increasingly important in a world of 18,000, 19,000 and even 20,000 TEU giant ultra large container ships.

Marsh to Take Over as Lloyd’s Register CEO

Alastair Marsh, current CFO at the Lloyd’s Register Group Ltd. (LR), has been appointed as the successor to CEO Richard Sadler who has decided to step down at the end of 2015. Sadler will pass the CEO role to Marsh on October 1, 2015 and commence a formal handover period until the end of December 2015. Simon Nice, currently Group FP&A Director, will take up the role of Interim Group Financial Director during the transition. GNS Announces Senior Appointments

Maritime navigation services group Global Navigation Solutions (GNS) announced the appointments of Phil Stothard as Chief Information Officer and Kieron Abernethy as Chief Revenue Officer. Both assume their roles with immediate effect. Phil Stothard joins GNS from banking and payment solutions provider ACI. Phil has over 25 years’ experience of IT development, leading teams and delivering global solutions for organizations such as HSBC and Accenture. Phil has particular expertise in data and information systems and has a track record of delivering value to internal and external clients from the solutions he has designed and delivered.

Great Ships of 2014: Gas Star - 84,000 CBM LPG Carrier

Gas Star is the first of two 84,000 CBM LPG Carrier built by Hyundai Heavy Industries for KSS. The vessel measures 225 x 36.6 m, with a depth of 22.2 m and a design draft of 11.6 m. The ship is powered by a HYUNDAI-MAN B&W 6S60MC-C8.2 main engine with a NCR output of 11,340 kW at 89.5 rpm, enabling it to sail at a service speed of 16.8 knots with 15% sea margin. Electrical supply is derived from three generators of 1,140 kW, plus an emergency unit of 150 kW. It has a cargo space divided into four cargo holds.

Great Ships of 2014: Linda Oldendorff

 First of Six 208,000 dwt bulk carrier HHI built

The 208,000 DWT Bulk Carrier Linda Oldendorff built at Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) was delivered to Oldendorff in Germany on September 30, 2014. It is the first in a series of six. The vessel has flush deck with forecastle, bulbous bow, transom stern, single rudder (full-spade) and single screw propeller directly driven by a slow speed diesel engine. It measures 300 x 50 x 25m, with a 16-m draft. The vessel has nine cargo holds and was constructed as single hull with hopper sided double bottom and topside wing.

Great Ships of 2014: Al Kout Environmental, Piracy Protected, Proven

The KOTC operated crude oil tanker Al Kout is the fourth sister Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) of 317,300 DWT, part of the KOTC Phase III of the fleet newbuilding projects. The vessel has been designed and built under the survey of NK class and distinguished in the register by the following notations: NS*(CSR, TOB, PSPC-WBT) (PS-FA) (ESP, PSCM, IWS) (EA, BWTS, HMS, BRS1), MSN*, M0, Prime Ship-Hull care. According to the builder and the owner, the tanker Al Kout offers many advantages over traditional tankers in terms of efficiency, environmental friendliness, crew comfort and security.

Fire at Tatipaka-Lanco Pipeline of GAIL in K.G. Basin

A fire broke out early today along a natural gas pipeline of GAIL (India) Limited at Tatipaka in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. Fifteen casualties have happened and eighteen injured are being treated in four hospitals in the vicinity. The fire started at around 5:45 AM today along the Tatipaka – Lanco natural gas pipeline, approximately 50 metres from ONGC’s Tatipaka terminal and about 500 metres from the GAIL terminal. GAIL’s Crisis Management system was invoked immediately; about eight fire tenders were pressed into service and the fire was brought under control at around 7:00 AM. Preliminary reports suggest damage to a 1.5 metres length of the pipeline. The exact cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained.

Aegis Logistics commissioned ahead of schedule

Aegis Group, a Leader in Oil, Gas and Chemical Logistics, announced successful early commissioning of the 70,120 KL Bulk Liquid Terminal at Pipavav port on West coast of India. The Pipavav - Phase I expansion was initiated in February 2013 to set up Bulk Liquid Terminal of 1,20,000 KL & 2,700 MT of Gas Terminal & was targeted to commission in H2 FY2015. However, the best efforts of in-house project team resulted in advancement of project by six months. Over 50% Liquid Facilities has now been commissioned with 13 additional tanks operational with a storage capacity totaling to 70,120 KL. New Bulk Carrier from Imabari Offers Unique Advantages

Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. completed the 95,000 DWT bulk carrier, Raga at its Marugame Shipyard. The bulk carrier is unique in that it has adopted a next-generation superstructure called the Aero-Citadel, which according to the shipyard offers significant advantages in both air resistance and antipiracy measures. The Aero-Citadel has slimly streamlined shape and includes the accommodation quarters, engine room and funnel casing. This superstructure can reduce the wind pressure during navigation by 25-30% based on wind tunnel testing.

Greek Shipowner: First to Order G-Type Engine

MAN Diesel & Turbo’s assessment of the two-stroke market has borne fruit with a number of Greek shipowners showing concrete interest in the company’s new, G-type, ultra-long-stroke engine program. Athens-based shipowner Thenamaris has placed a surprise order for four 6G80ME-C9.2 engines to power 4 × 5,000-teu container vessels, to be built by Hyundai (HSHI) in South Korea. Specifications for the contract indicate a ship speed at NCR of 21.5 knots with a design draft of 12 m. Rickmers takes delivery of its Final Two 13,100TEU Ships

Another naming ceremony for two 13,100TEU container vessels being built for the Rickmers Group took place on 31 May at the Ulsan shipyard of Hyundai Heavy Industries. TAURO RICKMERS and LIBRA RICKMERS are the final two ships in an eight-ship series being built for the Hamburg shipowner for longterm charter to Maersk Line. The two ships were christened by family friends of Rickmers Group Chairman Bertram Rickmers. Mrs Antoinette Zornig named TAURO RICKMERS while Mrs Elke Scharfe named LIBRA RICKMERS.

Rickmers’ Maersk Edinburgh Maiden Call in Hamburg

The largest Rickmers ship ever to call in the Port of Hamburg arrived at the Burchardkai Terminal on the late evening of Friday, 13 August. The 13,100TEU Maersk Edinburgh, which was christened Pearl Rickmers by Nina Ruge in South Korea on 2 July, was built for the Rickmers Group by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan and is now on a ten-year charter to Maersk Line. In a small ceremony on board, Port Captain Jörg Pollmann presented Capt. Jerzy Priadka with the Admiralty coat-of-arms of the Port of Hamburg to commemorate the maiden call and wished the ship and its crew welcome to Hamburg.

Even for Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the world’s largest shipyard group, it was a remarkable occasion. In a quadruple naming ceremony at HHI’s Ulsan shipyard on July 2, Rickmers Group christened four ultra-large container ships (ULCS) of 13,100 TEU each. Each of the four ships, Pearl Rickmers, Ruby Rickmers, Aqua Rickmers and Coconee Rickmers, has a service speed of 24.3 knots. They have been chartered longterm to Maersk Line and will join Maersk’s “E-class” as Maersk Edinburgh, Maersk Emden, Maersk Eindhoven and Maersk Essen.

NMCB-28 Departs Port Hueneme for Six-Month Tour in Iraq

About 500 Navy Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 28 deployed March 1 for a mission to Iraq in support of the global war on terrorism. According to the battalion commander, Cmdr. Craig Scharton, the battalion will build and maintain roads, drill water wells, complete vertical construction projects, and assist convoy security operations while in Iraq. “We’ve gone through almost two months of training here in Port Hueneme, and we’ll go through additional training in Kuwait,” Scharton said. British Trader has been noted as a technologically advanced double hull LNG carriers, designed to meet world wide trading on the ship/shore compatibility and fuel tank capacity, double hulled cargo area with four cargo tanks constructed to GazTransport & Technigaz Mark III cargo containment system — for the carriage of LNG cargoes at cryogenic temperature (-163°C) and atmospheric pressure. Harad

Harad is the first in a four-ship double-hulled series of VLCCs constructed for Hellespont of Greece by the South Korean builder Samsung Heavy Industries. During construction, the four vessels were re-sold to NSCSA of Saudi Arabia. The vessel, which incorporates a number of technical features to ensure high levels of environmental protection and high performance, holds a large main engine, improved strength by increased plate thickness, improved service lifetime for coatings by increased paint specification and advanced inert gas system. The hull form of the vessel has been specifically remolded to meet Hellespont's requirements and differs from the conventional VLCCs, featuring a 'blunt' fore part and a breadth of 190 ft. (58 m) to reduce hull deflection.
