National Maritime Day

“I hold no branch in higher esteem, than the Merchant Marine…”That is a quote from General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Allied Commander of the Pacific in WWII. That one sentence sums up National Maritime Day. Inasmuch if it were not for our glorious Merchant Marine and maritime industry, we may not even have been a nation at all.National Maritime Day is the day we honor our American Merchant Mariners for protecting our freedom and for their dedication to promoting American commerce together with the accomplishments of the U.S. maritime industry.

Containership Fires

Incidents involving container ships, although not new, have made the news much more frequently of late. Change of Command for Cal Maritime's Training Ship

After 10 years at the helm, Harry Bolton handed over command of the Training Ship Golden Bear Wednesday at California State University Maritime Academy.Bolton, a 1978 graduate of the Academy, returned to Cal Maritime on May 1, 2008 after a 30-year career with American Maritime Officers. Twenty of those years were with American Overseas Marine Corporation (AMSEA) aboard the original preposition ships based out of Guam, Saipan and Diego Garcia. Bolton began sailing as Master in 1985, only seven years after graduation.Dr.

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Graduates 229

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point graduated 229 new Merchant Marine and Military Officers as part of its Class of 2016 commencement ceremony today. The keynote speaker, Gen. Darren W. McDew, Commander, U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), gave the commencement address before a crowd of more than 2,200, including graduates, family members and representatives from the federal government, U.S. military and maritime industry. “Your craft now is leadership,” said McDew. SUNY Maritime College Names ABS Chairs

The State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College has selected Dr. Richard Burke and Dr. Christopher Clott as its inaugural ABS chairs following a comprehensive search that drew an expansive range of applicants, the college announced today. Made possible through the financial support of ABS (formerly the American Bureau of Shipping), which provided an endowment of $3 million dollars, the positions aim to allow SUNY Maritime to remain “first and foremost” in the maritime education and training field.

Cal Maritime Training Ship Rescues Two

An Emergency Rescue Boat from the Cal Maritime training ship Golden Bear tows a stranded 17-ft. skiff back to the ship. The ’s 500-ft. training ship Golden Bear rescued two fishermen Sunday evening, August 17th, approximately 80 miles off the . The two men departed the area earlier that day in an open 17-ft. skiff, equipped with a single outboard engine. They told authorities they were heading for offshore fishing grounds when their engine seized up. They then radioed for help to the U.S. Coast Guard in . The Golden Bear was approximately 50 miles away at the time, heading northward on the final leg of her annual three-and-a-half-month summer training cruise to ports in the western and southern Pacific.

ConocoPhillips Marine Donatation to Help LNG Training

SUNY Maritime College has received a corporate donation of $10,000 from ConocoPhillips Marine to advance Maritime’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) training and educational program. Maritime will make upgrades to its liquid cargo simulator, increase the number of student stations within the simulator and purchase software for use in LNG tanker simulations. The program will also be expanded to include product tanker and crude oil tanker operations and training.
