The first Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS), Harry DeWolf, was delivered to the Government of Canada on July 31, 2020, in Halifax, N.S.Built by Irving Shipbuilding, the new 6,615-metric-ton, 103.6-meter ship is the largest vessel ever built in Canada in a combat package as well as the largest Navy vessel built in the country in more than 50 years. It is also the first warship to be delivered as part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), with many more ships to come as part of the Navy's future fleet.

Damen Launches First of Two Ro-Pax Ferries

Eighty-meter ice class Ro-Pax ferry MV Veteran was recently launched by Damen Shipyards Galaţi in Romania, the builder announced today. The vessel represents the first of a two-vessel contract, with a design stemming from a Canadian-Danish partnership between Fleetway and Knud E. Hansen. A video of the launch is available here. “We are working very hard to deliver these ferries on schedule and on budget,” said Damen Manager North America Jan van Hogerwou. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery to the province in the fall of this year and in early 2016.

Focus Maritime to Promote Port of Halifax across Europe

Liverpool-based maritime advisory firm and consultancy Focus Maritime (North West) Limited has been appointed to promote Canada's Halifax Port Authority across Europe. The move by the Nova Scotia-based authority is aimed at strengthening its presence across the continent and sees Liverpool-based Graham Fraser take on the role of director, business development and growth - Europe. Strategically located as North America's first inbound and last outbound gateway, the Port of Halifax is a deep, wide, ice-free harbor.

Alion Awarded Canadian Shipbuilding Contract

Alion Part of Winning Team Awarded $8 Billion Canadian Shipbuilding Contract. Technology Solutions Firm to Support Design and Engineering for Non-combat Vessels. Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned engineering, R&D and operational solutions firm, is part of the team awarded an $8 Billion contract to construct non-combat-oriented vessels under Canada’s National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS). Working with team lead Seaspan Marine Corp.(www.seaspan.com), Alion will provide ship design and engineering through its wholly owned subsidiary, Alion Canada of Ottawa, Ontario. Under the contract, the team will design and construct vessels that address Canada's long-range plans for non-combatant vessels.

Year-to-Date Seaway Cargo Shipments Up 18%

Cargo shipments through the St. Lawrence Seaway continue to rebound on the back of strong American grain exports and iron ore and steel activity, along with an uptick of new business and trade routes. The St. Lawrence Seaway reported that total year-to-date shipments reached 22.9 million metric tons from March 25 to September 30, an increase of 18 percent over the same period in 2009. Year-to-date shipments of iron ore for 2010 is up 62 percent to 7.2 million metric tons compared to last year, while American grain shipments have increased by 36 percent to 1.3 million metric tons. In September, these numbers were boosted by a 68 percent surge in American grain shipments to 604,000 metric tons compared to the same month in 2009.

Aseco Container Services has been appointed to represent Canada Maritime in three of the most dynamic markets in Eastern Europe, namely Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. years. Golden Glory For Canada Maritime in Montreal

For the third time in its history, Canada Maritime won the traditional'race' to be the first ocean-going ship to enter the port of Montreal after midnight on December 31st. CP Ships, FastShip Announce Agreement

CP Ships has signed an agreement with FastShip to assume commercial and marketing management for FastShip's TransAtlantic services. London-based CP Ships is the TransAtlantic's largest container service operator with twelve separate loops, and the seventh largest world-wide. Report: Three Carriers Dominate TransAtlantic Trade

Three new carrier groups now control 58% of the total capacity in the transatlantic container trade, according to World Liner Supply, a new quarterly report from the compairdata.com on-line shipping database. The fourth quarter 2000 issue of World Liner Supply shows that the merger of services and the combination of smaller carrier groups has led to a substantially higher market concentration in the North America/northern Europe container trade. Shipowners are about to find themselves under a barrage of propaganda about electronic charts and the display systems that run them. These systems have been around for some years, and are used heavily in the offshore, dredging, fishing and leisure fields. But merchant shipping, with a few exceptions, has shied away from using electronic charting, preferring to wait for a common international standard and type-approved equipment. The common standard is now in place, and the first approved ECDIS systems are entering the market. Canada Maritime’s Northern Service Passes 3M

Three million teus in 18 years. Maritime's Northern Service since it started operations in 1984. President, CP Ships with overall responsibility for Canada Maritime. "Just thinking about the variety of goods that will have been carried and the number of customers for which we have moved cargoes is quite remarkable. "Laid end-to-end, three million teus stretches nearly 11,250 miles, which is not far short of being half way round the world!" he added. Today, Canada Maritime's Northern Service offers three routings which all operate weekly through the Montreal Gateway. Miles, Webber Step Down from CP Ships

Following the completion of the acquisition by TUI AG of CP Ships and its de-listing from the Toronto and New York stock exchanges, CEO Ray Miles will step down from his position on December 31, 2005, and CFO Ian Webber will leave CP Ships at the end of January 2006. "Throughout his career Ray has had a tremendous influence on our industry. He transformed an underperforming single-route two-vessel shipping line into a consistently profitable top-20 international carrier. And, as the first Chairman of the World Shipping Council, he oversaw the development of the container shipping industry's highly successful cooperative relationship with the U.S. government on maritime security.

Transport Canada Selects EMS Satcom

EMS Satcom, a division of EMSTechnologies, Inc. reported that Transport Canada has selected the EMS SATCOM eNfusion Broadband high-speed data system to enhance marine pollution surveillance and detection on Transport Canada's National Aerial Surveillance Program (NASP) Dash 8 aircraft. Flight Acceptance Tests were completed in early November 2006. EMS SATCOM's eNfusion system was installed and integrated with the Swedish Space Corporation's (SSC) Maritime Surveillance System (MSS 6000) to allow for real-time transmission and replay of data. The advantage is that evidence captured during the pollution patrol can be directly transmitted from the aircraft to command centers or marine safety inspectors in real-time…

Canada Shipping Act, 2001 Enters Force

The Canada Shipping Act, 2001 (CSA 2001) came into effect on July 1, 2007, said the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. It replaces the Canada Shipping Act (CSA) as the principal legislation governing safety in marine transportation and recreational boating, as well as protection of the marine environment. "The coming into force of CSA 2001 is a significant milestone in Canada's maritime history," said Minister Cannon. The new Act promotes the sustainable growth of the shipping industry without compromising safety. HMCS Toronto Assists Eruption Victims

Yesterday, HMCS Toronto wasconducting a search and rescue operation, at the request of the Yemen coast guard, to locate nine people believed to be at sea after a volcanic eruption occurred on Sunday on the island of Jazirt Atta-Ir, about 140 kilometers from Yemen in the Red Sea. At the time of the eruption, the NATO fleet was sailing north towards the Suez Canal. Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Toronto is currently deployed on Operation SEXTANT, Canada’s maritime contribution to the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) fleet in support of the NATO Response Force (NRF). The Halifax-class patrol frigate departed Halifax on July 20, 2007 for a five-month deployment during which it will conduct operations in the Mediterranean and circumnavigate Africa.

Canada Maritime Agrees to Container Slot Sale

Service (SLCS), has agreed to charter a fixed number of container slots to CMA-CGM on one of its Montreal-North Europe services. The agreement is expected to take effect in late April after CMA-CGM has withdrawn its existing tonnage from this route. The slot-charter is in addition to the existing agreement between Canada Maritime, OOCL and the Canex consortium which began in January 2003. "This will help supply and demand in the Montreal-North Europe trade lane become better balanced," said CP Ships Executive Vice President Commercial Alan Boylan. The slots will be taken on three SLCS ships, Canmar Spirit, Canmar Venture and OOCL Montreal for service between Montreal and Antwerp and Le Havre.
