"Port of the Future" Announces Comms Awards

The Borders, Trade, and Immigration Institute, a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence, led by the University of Houston, announced the creation of the annual Port of the Future Award for “Excellence in Port Communications and Community Relations.”  Each year, this award will be presented at the annual Port of the Future Conference, held the first week of April, in Houston, Texas. Mombasa Port Workers End Strike

Mombasa, Kenya port workers end strike and returned to work on Friday after being warned they could lose their jobs, reports Reuters. However the members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC-K) said protests over changes to their health care costs could resume next week and aims to push the government to revoke the higher deductions for its national health insurance scheme. Sylvan Mghanga, an official at the port's communications department, said workers had returned to work fearing they would lose their jobs. "The management has never made such an announcement before, so it shocked and scared everyone, and that is why they have returned," said Mghanga, referring to a Friday morning deadline for striking workers to resume duty or be fired.

New Ballast Water Regulations Add Costs for Shipowners

Shipowners will soon be obliged to address new and expensive regulations to deal with ballast water. The Ballast Water Management Convention 2004 will require them to understand compliance standards, develop a ballast water management plan, select and install a treatment system and train personnel to operate the system. Their ships will be subject to surveys and inspection to maintain certification. The Convention requires ratification by 30 states, accounting for 35% of world merchant tonnage. Port of Montreal Keeps Seafarers in Touch, Wins Award

A majority of seafarers have no internet access available to them on board: IAPH recognizes Montreal for providing free WiFi access in the port. According to a 2013 research of SIRC (Seafarers accommodation on contemporary cargo ships) cited by ITF “very few seafarers have access to internet. 12% reported free and unlimited internet access. The majority(61%) reported that they have no internet access available to them on board at all. The remainder(27%) experience either time restriction or charges or some other kind of restricted access”. However, a handful of ports are able to offer a free internet connection to seafarers. AAPA Workshop on Crisis Communications & Management

An American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) two-day program slated for Los Angeles, Feb. 21-22, 2013 will address the subject. Canaveral Wins Ports Industry Awards

Port Canaveral’s branding campaign is among six won by the Port in the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) 2007 Communications Award Program. The annual competition has recognized excellence in port communications since 1966. This year’s competition attracted 194 entries from 38 ports. Port Canaveral also received awards for it’s ‘Cruise to Your Cruise’ ad; ‘Eukor Arrival’ cargo event; Employee Brand Training Program; Port Canaveral magazine; and Port Canaveral website.
