Cosco Eyes Spanish port of Algeciras
Algeciras Bay Port Authority in southern Spain has put up a tender for its third container terminal, and China's Cosco Shipping Ports is already being mentioned as a fore runner candidate, says a report by Caixin. CMF Operates New Barge in Gibraltar Strait
With the aim of giving a better service to its customers, CEPSA Marine Fuels, S.A. has put into place a new barge in Algeciras Bay, providing service for the ports of the Strait. The double hull barge is the Monte Anaga, which is new building and holds the most advanced technology. It has been specially designed to supply marine products in terms of manoeuvres, pumping rates, automatic blenders, radar soundings and meters. It segregates up to four different products, two for heavy products and two for lighter ones, providing a great versatility in everyday operations. The Monte Anaga is 4.335 MT DWT with a pumping rate of 4x250 m3/h for heavy and 2x100 for light products, and with capacity of 3.300 MT for heavy products and 550 MT for lighter ones.

It segregates up to five different products, three for fuel, one for MGO and one for MDO, providing a great versatility in everyday operations.
Cargo Traffic up at Port of Algeciras Bay
The Port of Algeciras Bay handled a total Cargo Throughput volume of 60.8 million tonnes (+ 10.06%) in 2003 – double the figure of a decade ago. As for the evolution of the various traffic-types in the Port of Algeciras Bay, the increase in Container throughput (+12.61%) is especially evident, breaking through the 2.5-million-TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) barrier and, in this case, trebling the figures recorded a decade ago. Import and export container throughput grew extraordinarily by 39% and 31% respectively.
INTERTANKO Records Publicly Reported Tanker Incidents
To obtain a better understanding of tanker safety, INTERTANKO records publicly reported tanker incidents. The number so far this year has followed the positive improvement trend of the last couple of years. The biggest accidental loss of oil occurred in Algeciras Bay shortly after the Prestige incident. A Spanish bunker barge sank with some 1,000 tons of fuel oil, but little pollution was reported on the beaches at the time. Mainly based on information from Informa, INTERTANKO has recorded 86 tanker incidents January-July 2003. Most of the incidents have been minor and pollution has been recorded in 7 cases, the biggest of which, beside the bunker barge spill mentioned, above, were a 125-tonne chemical spill and a 50-tonne diesel spill.
