Royal Caribbean Sets to Sail to Tianjin

Royal Caribbean International will deploy yet another big ship in China, with the 4,180-passenger Ovation of the Seas joining Quantum of the Seas in the Far East.

The Miami-based cruise company takes delivery of Ovation in April 2016 and it will head straight to China rather than Europe or the Caribbean. Ovation of the Seas will homeport in Tianjin, near Beijing.

In May 2015, Royal Caribbean will redeploy its Quantum of the Seas to Shanghai from its current homeport in Bayonne, New Jersey. Ovation is also a Quantum-class ship, meaning two of the three Quantum ships will be sailing from China year-round.

“We are furthering our commitment to China by bringing two of the world’s newest and most advanced Quantum-class cruise ships to the region,” Michael Bayley, President, Royal Caribbean said.

Ovation of the Seas, the third Quantum-class vessel, is scheduled to enter service in spring 2016. The second Quantum ship, Anthem of the Seas, will make its debut in Southampton, England, on April 22 and will sail from New Jersey after a summer season in Europe.

Last August, the company started to cooperate with Tianjin Maritime College to train and employ Chinese talents. It now hopes to expand the program to recruit more students and work with more colleges in the country.

By 2016, Royal Caribbean will have a total of five ships docked in China — Shanghai, Tianjin, Hong Kong and Xiamen. The vessels will offer nonstop trips ranging from three to 12 days to other ports in China, and to Japan, South Korea and Vietnam. Ovation of the Seas will debut on a 52-day rip from Southampton, the United Kingdom, to Tianjin, starting next May.
