PPG Donates $10,000 to NACE For Annual Scholarships
Donation supports students pursuing corrosion-, coatings-related degrees. The PPG Industries Foundation has donated $10,000 to create two annual scholarships provided through the NACE International Foundation, a 501(c)(3) entity affiliated with NACE International, The Corrosion Society. Two students pursuing postsecondary academic degrees related to corrosion or coatings each received a $5,000 scholarship on behalf of PPG. Azra Turajlic of Fort Worth, Texas, a freshman majoring in petroleum engineering at Louisiana State University.
ClassNK Approves First Corrosion Resistant Steel
April 27 (Tokyo) - ClassNK announced today that it had issued the world’s first type approval for corrosion resistant steel to the new NSGP®-1 steel manufactured by Nippon Steel Corporation’s Oita Works . The approval certifies that the new steel, which has been specifically designed for application on the inner bottom of the cargo oil tanks of crude oil tanker, complies with the IMO’s new performance standard for corrosion resistant steels. New requirements for preventing corrosion…
TRAILBLAZERS: Ultrastrip Helps Clear the Way
While convention holds that the most vital marine technological advances happen in or around the engine room and bridge, the business of coating and corrosion control - stripping, preparing and applying - arguably poses the most strenuous test the marine environment offers. It is a vessel's initial coating and maintenance thereafter that largely determines a vessel's lifecycle, thus its profitability. Coatings, much like mechanical systems, require constant attention to ensure that they are performing the duty required, namely maintaining the structural integrity of the steel beneath. That said, the last place a vessel owner want to see its vessel is in drydock, with a battalion of workers vigorously peeling, stripping and chipping away at a vessel's armor.
Coatings and Corrosion Control Internet Portals Form Alliance
CorrosionSource.com and PaintSquare.com have formed an alliance to integrate their Internet exchange, portal and technical offerings to the corrosion control community worldwide. The basis for the alliance is that the two sites together offer a full range of technical and product information, as well as rich Web site functionalities, to both corrosion specialists and non-specialists alike. CorrosionSource has a 30,000-page technical library dealing with the disciplines of corrosion technology and includes contributions from Nickel Development Institute and Marcel Dekker, Inc. PaintSquare’s library focuses on protective and marine coatings…
