Anglo-Eastern and Univan Set Sail Together: Largest Ever Ship Management Merger

There has been a great deal of merger activity in the shipping industry over the past few years, especially amongst owners, but, Anglo-Eastern Group and Univan Group have reached an agreement, with the culmination of the largest ever merger of independent, third party ship management companies – the Anglo-Eastern Univan Group. Already in the top three global ship management companies, Anglo-Eastern’s merger with Univan Ship Management creates the industry leader. There are significant scale advantages in ship management arising from a global foot print and better career opportunities for both seafarers and shore staff which are of benefit to a ship manager’s customers, the shipowners.

Merged Anglo-Eastern & Univan Set Sail

Anglo-Eastern Group and Univan Group have reached an agreement which culminates as the largest ever merger of independent, third-party ship management companies, now known as the Anglo-Eastern Univan Group. Already in the top three global ship management companies, Anglo-Eastern’s merger with Univan Ship Management creates the industry leader, the newly formed group said. InterManager Salutes Capt. Vanderperre

InterManager, the international association of in-house and third party ship managers, has paid tribute to the life and memory of Captain Charles Vanderperre, the founder of Univan Ship Management and the long-accredited grandfather of modern day third party shipmanagement, who died at the age of 88. In a statement, Guy Morel, General Secretary of the Association, said: “We salute his memory and applaud the work he did in driving forward the development of third party shipmanagement. Captain Vanderperre, who handed over the responsibility for the day to day operations of Univan to the management team some months ago, passed away peacefully on 19th September, in his 88th year, after a long illness. A private funeral will take place in Thailand this week.

ABS Audits Univan Tanker

Hong Kong based Univan Shipmanagement becomes the latest organization to achieve certification from class society ABS in order to meet the IMO’s International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code in preparation for the July 2004 implementation date. Univan Ship Management and its sister company Pacific Marine, together manage a diverse fleet of over one hundred vessels comprising tankers, bulk carriers, pure car carriers, chemical tankers, container carriers, general cargo vessels, reefers, supply vessels and woodchip carriers.

Cheng Purchases Open Hatch Bulk Carrier

In addition to the recently reported purchase of the Berge Fuji (299,000dwt VLCC), Fred Cheng’s Shinyo Group has also completed the purchase of a 28,000dwt, double hull, Japanese built open hatch type bulk carrier, to be named the Shinyo Challenge. Delivered in 1996, the MV Admire, renamed Shinyo Challenge was another successful collaboration of Fred Cheng’s Shinyo Group as the owner, Captain Vanderperre’s Univan as ship manager and Masatoshi Yokota, Senior Vice President of Orix the world’s largest leasing company - as the financier. The vessel has been chartered to Pacific Basin for a 3 year term plus options and will be re-flagged from Panama to Hong Kong flag and with a Univan trained all-Chinese crew on board. ”My strategy is simple,” said Cheng.
