A contract to upgrade the ‘nerve center’ for shipping at the Barrow Island port proves the resources sector is continuing to fuel big opportunities for Australian firms. Australian Maritime Systems Group (AMSG) has been awarded a contract by Chevron Australia to design and install a new Vessel Tracking Service (VTS) system to manage shipping to and from the Chevron-operated Gorgon Project on Barrow Island, 60km off the north-west coast of Western Australia. AMSG Managing Director John Sugarman said the new Vessel Tracking System will utilize state-of-the-art radar and software systems.

Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) today announced that its first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Gorgon Project has departed Barrow Island off the northwest coast of Western Australia. The cargo will be delivered to one of Chevron's foundation buyers, Chubu Electric Power, for delivery into Japan. The Asia Excellence loading the first Gorgon liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo for delivery into Japan. The first cargo highlights the company's growing leadership as an LNG supplier. "Departure of the first cargo from the Gorgon Project is a key milestone in our commitment to be a reliable LNG provider for customers across the Asia-Pacific region," said Mike Wirth, executive vice president, Chevron Midstream and Development.

The first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Australian Chevron's monster $55 billion Gorgon Project has departed Barrow Island yesterday aboard the 2015-built LNG carrier Asia Excellence, US-based energy giant Chevron Corporation said. Chubu Electric Power, one of Chevron's foundation buyers for Gorgon LNG, will receive the cargo. Chevron, which started producing the fuel on Barrow Island earlier this month, had expected to make the first shipment last week. “Departure of the first cargo from the Gorgon Project is a key milestone in our commitment to be a reliable LNG provider for customers across the Asia-Pacific region,” said Chevron executive VP for midstream and development Mike Wirth.

Chevron Corporation announced that its Australian subsidiaries have signed a non-binding Heads of Agreement (HoA) with ENN LNG Trading Company Limited (ENN) for the delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to China from the Chevron-operated Gorgon natural gas project in Australia. Chevron Corporation's wholly-owned subsidiary, Chevron U.S.A. Inc., has today signed a non-binding liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply Heads of Agreement (HOA) with China Huadian Green Energy Co., Ltd. When the agreement is finalized, China Huadian Green Energy is expected to receive up to 1 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) of LNG over 10 years starting in 2020. The engineering group Monadelphous has won a $200 million Shell Australia contract on its Prelude floating LNG project off the Kimberley coast. The contract is for major, long-term maintenance and modifications services for the Prelude Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) project in Browse Basin, 475km northeast of Broome in Western Australia. Monadelphous will provide maintenance, brownfield modifications and turnaround services to the LNG process plant, support utilities, hull and non-process infrastructure including accommodation and control rooms. The contract also includes the delivery of fabrication services from Darwin in support of offshore operations. The contract is for an initial seven years with a further two, 2 year extension options.

Chevron Corporation today announced its Australian subsidiaries have signed a binding Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with SK LNG Trading Pte Ltd (SK). Under the SPA, SK LNG Trading, which is part of a leading industrial conglomerate in South Korea, will receive 4.15 million tons of LNG over a five-year period starting in 2017. During the time of this agreement, over 75 percent of Chevron’s equity LNG from Gorgon will be committed to customers in Asia. “This agreement is an important step in the commercialization of Chevron’s significant natural gas holdings in Australia,” said Pierre Breber, president, Chevron Gas and Midstream.

Two months post-contract signing, Australia’s Bhagwan Marine received the delivery of Damen ASD 2310. The tug, named Bhagwan Pride, will begin her duties with operations at an LNG development near the Barrow Island Marine Park, off the Australian West Coast. The Damen ASD 2310 is a mainstay of coastal and harbour towing and push-pull operations. The Bhagwan Pride has an ahead bollard pull of 48.7 ton and 46.5 ton astern – the total output of 3,000bkW provided by two Caterpillar 3512C TA engines. She will be mobilized for towing barges loaded with equipment.

Substantial charter agreement for Solstad's offshore Derrick Lay Barge (DLB) "Norce Endeavour" by Australia's Leighton Contractors. DLB "Norce Endeavour" will work at the Gorgon LNG Jetty and Marine Structures on Barrow Island, Western
Australia. Solstad will also provide project management and engineering to support the DLB scope of works and
 operation from Solstad's offices in Singapore and Perth, Western Australia. The mobilisation of Norce Endeavour will start in October 2012 after completion of existing charter. The contract value is confidential between the parties.

Fairstar Heavy Transport N.V. Fairstar Heavy Transport N.V. announce their new build 50,000DWT semi-submersible vessel FORTE has left the quayside and begun a series of tests and sea trials off the coast of China. The sea trials will be under the supervision of Det Norske Veritas (DNV), the vessel's Classification Society. The barge named 'Alamo' has been built for Karratha business Offshore Plant Hire and will be chartered to marine operations company Bhagwan Marine. Strategic Marine has signed another repeat order with Western Australian company Bhagwan Marine to deliver two new vessels to service the WA's offshore oil and gas industry, including the Gorgon Project. The new contracts for a 49.5 metre and 38 metre landing craft follows the delivery of a 48 metre landing craft to join the Bhagwan Marine fleet late last year and a 27 metre work barge in March this year. The multi-cargo vessels will operate in WA's north-west hydrocarbon province and have been designed to accommodate low incline beach landings.

Perth-based ship building company Strategic Marine has won a contract to supply a 88.5-ft work barge to service the energy and resources sector in Western Australia's north-west. The vessel, being built for Karratha business Offshore Plant Hire, will be based in the Port of Dampier and be chartered to marine operations company Bhagwan Marine. It will service the areas around Dampier, Onslow and Barrow Island and be used primarily for port upgrades, construction support, mooring maintenance and shallow water dive perations.

Wilhelmsen Ships Service is providing  a range of support services to the Gorgon project, Australia’s largest ever oil and gas project. Services include the importation of dredgers and project cargo shipments. The company is also providing agency and logistics support  to the offshore accommodation vessel MS Finnmarken which houses a 350-strong workforce for the project. Operated by Hurtigruten, the Finnmarken is a Norwegian owned cruise vessel, whose on board residents are mainly dredging crew. The vessel is moored near to Barrow Island which is the site of the Gorgon Project’s gas plant construction. The key advantage of accommodating the workers offshore is that it reduces the environmental impact of the project by removing the need to accommodate these workers on Barrow Island itself…

Strategic Marine won the contract to build four new workboats for Leighton-Saipem Consortium for use by the Chevron operated Gorgon Project. The vessels will be built at the company's Henderson Shipyards and used to transport workers to and from construction barges operating at Barrow Island as part of the LNG jetty and marine structure contract for the Gorgon Project. Strategic Marine Chief Marketing Officer Terry O’Connor said these vessels would be the first delivered under the new contract with Leighton-Saipem Consortium. The new workboats will each carry 12 passengers and will be delivered this year. The Gorgon Project is operated by an Australian subsidiary of Chevron and is a joint venture of the Australian subsidiaries of Chevron (approximately 47 percent)…

Fairstar Heavy Transport NV (FAIR) has been awarded two transportation contracts by Chevron Australia Pty Ltd and Kellogg Joint Venture - Gorgon. The contracts were signed by representatives of both companies on May 31, 2010. Under the terms of the agreements, Fairstar will provide two of its Semi Submersible Heavy Transport Vessels for the transportation of modules and related project materials from various construction sites throughout Asia, to the Gorgon Project’s LNG Plant being constructed on Barrow Island off the northwest coast of Australia. The two contracts are for a minimum term of one year per contract and can be extended at the option of Chevron and Kellogg Joint Venture for an additional four month period.

J. Ray McDermott, S.A. (J. Ray) announced that its subsidiary P.T. McDermott Indonesia (PTMI) has been awarded a contract by the Kellogg Joint Venture-Gorgon on behalf of Chevron Australia Pty. Ltd, operator of the Gorgon Project. The estimated value of the contract if the work is completed per contract terms is in excess of $150m. More than 60 pre-assembled racks and units with an estimated combined weight of approximately 25,000 tonnes will be constructed at J. Ray’s Batam Island fabrication facility in Indonesia. J. Ray will provide services for project management, fabrication engineering, procurement and material management, construction, commissioning assistance, quarantine compliance, loadout and seafastening.

Ship builder Strategic Marine Pty Ltd has signed a contract with a West Australian marine operations company, Bhagwan Marine, to build a 159 ft landing craft for use in the Australian offshore oil and gas industry. The vessel will be used in Western Australian’s north-west hydrocarbon province and has been designed by International Maritime Consultants, to accommodate for low incline beach landings. The craft’s design features a low angle bow to enable heavy equipment to be driven over the ramp door. With a 42 ft beam, the vessel can accommodate up to ten 20-ft containers with a maximum payload of 400 tonnes. An added advantage is its economical fuel consumption of about 150 litres per hour at 10 knots cruising speed.

According to reports, Chevron Corp. cleared a hurdle in its quest to develop the multibillion-dollar Gorgon LNG project off Australia's western coast after agreeing to support environmental programs to protect a vulnerable species of turtle and other wildlife. The Gorgon venture, which is led by San Ramon-based Chevron, will provide about $26 million to conserve the flatback turtle, the state of Western Australia said. Four of the projects, including Gorgon, are overseas. The one domestic project among the top five is in the Gulf of Mexico, Cooper said. The cost of the project could range from $11.8b to $14.2 billion, according to published reports. Chevron owns 50 percent of the venture, and Shell and Exxon each have 25 percent.
