Sea Machines Receives $12 Million in Funding

Boston-based Sea Machines, a developer of autonomous control systems and advanced perception technology for maritime vessels, announced it has secured $12 million from a group of capital investors.The funding round, led by cleantech venture capital specialist Emerald Technology Ventures, was joined by Nabtesco Technology Ventures (NTV), Chevron Technology Ventures, Ingram Industries, RKKVC, Level 2 Ventures and IMC Ventures. This adds to a financing in 2023 led by the Geekdom Fund.The company said the investments will help it to "hone its technological edge and grow its market presence".

Diana Shipping Takes Delivery of 2016-built Ultramax

Dry bulk shipping company Diana Shipping announced it has taken delivery of a 2016-built Ultramax bulk carrier.Diana, through a separate wholly-owned subsidiary, had agreed to purchase the 63,379 dwt DSI Drammen (formerly Nord Potomac) in February 2023.The company also announced that, through the same wholly-owned subsidiary, it entered into a time charter contract with IMC Shipping Co. Pte. Ltd., at a gross charter rate of US$18,250 per day, minus a 5% commission paid to third parties, for a period until minimum April 10, 2024 up to maximum June 10, 2024. The charter is expected to commence on April 15, 2023.The employment of DSI Drammen is anticipated to generate approximately $6.5 million of gross revenue for the minimum scheduled period of the time charter, Diana said.

Ukraine '23/24 Grain Crop Likely Down 35-40 Million Tons

Progress in Brazil Repair Yard Project

The Brasil Basin Drydock Company (BBDC), a joint venture of McQuilling Services and Promon Engenharia, is setting up an industrial facility that will drydock and repair seagoing merchant vessels up to the largest merchant ships in the world.McQuilling announced the signing of a Protocol of Intention with the government of the state of Paraíba, Brazil, along with Chinese ship repair yard IMC YY.David Saginaw, Commercial Director for McQuilling Services, signed the Protocol on behalf shareholders of the Brasil Basin Drydock Company (BBDC). Governor João Azevedo signed on behalf of the government and Chen Yong, President of IMC YY ship repair yard in Zhoushan, China, signed on behalf of the yard.

Kolkata Port, Hooghly Pact for Liquid Cargo Terminal

The Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) has signed a concession agreement with Hooghly Oil & Gas Terminal to establish a liquid cargo handling terminal at Shalukhali in Haldia. The terminal will facilitate the movement of petroleum cargo such as LNG, LPG as well as vegetable oil. It is expected to develop over the next three years. The project will help reduce pre-berthing detention and turnaround time of tankers carrying different liquid cargo, leading to a reduction in logistics costs to trade. The new facility will come up at Shalukhkhali, 130 km from Kolkatta, where a second dock system was being planned at one stage. G Senthilvel, deputy chairman (Haldia), KoPT and Vimal Chopra, senior vice president (Business Development), IMC Ltd, signed the MoU in the presence of port chairman Vinit Kumar.

Road Map to Boost Singapore Maritime Industry

Dr Lam Pin Min, Senior Minister of State (SMS) for Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Health, launched the Sea Transport Industry Transformation Map (ITM) at the annual Singapore Maritime Foundation New Year Cocktail Reception. Developed by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) in partnership with the industry, unions and other government agencies, the Sea Transport ITM builds on MPA’s strategic long term plans to develop Singapore’s next-generation port and strengthen our international maritime centre (IMC). Specific initiatives have been laid out under the Sea Transport ITM to catalyse innovation, drive productivity improvements, as well as enhance the skills of the maritime workforce.

IMC Envisages Singapore as Global Maritime Hub

The International Maritime Centre (IMC) 2030 Advisory Committee, established by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) in August 2016, has submitted the IMC 2030 Strategic Review report to the Singapore Government. The Committee’s vision is for Maritime Singapore to be the Global Maritime Hub for Connectivity, Innovation and Talent. The Committee, chaired by Mr Andreas Sohmen-Pao, Chairman of BW Group, comprises 21 other global business leaders and experts from diverse sectors such as maritime, finance, commodities trading, logistics, finance and technology. The Committee reaffirmed that Singapore’s global hub port and IMC remain complementing twin engines of growth for Maritime Singapore.

ClassNK Singapore Celebrates 50 Years

ClassNK hosted an anniversary party on July to commemorate 50 years of its Singapore Office, established in 1967 to broaden the classification society’s service network in Southeast Asia. Held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the evening commenced with an opening address by Chairman and President of ClassNK, Koichi Fujiwara. Among guests in attendance, the Ambassador of Japan to Singapore, His Excellency Kenji Shinoda gave an honorary address followed by a congratulatory address by Assistant Chief Executive of Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, Tan Beng Tee.

Ocean transportation firm, “K” Line Pte Ltd, and Patrick Phoon, Deputy Managing Director of Evergreen Shipping Agency, received the International Maritime Centre (Corporate) Award and the International Maritime Centre (Individual) Award respectively. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has honoured ten industry partners who have made outstanding contributions to Singapore's development as a premier global hub port and a leading international maritime centre at the Singapore International Maritime Awards (IMA) 2017. Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd (“K” Line) started out as a representative office in 1973. Since then, “K” Line’s business activities have grown to include ship operations, ship management and ship agency.

IMC’s latest fisheries research and survey vessel design was built in Malaysia for the Bangladesh Department of Fisheries. RV Meen Shandhani arrived in Bangladesh in June after completing extensive sea and fishing trials and its delivery voyage. The Australian consultancy’s naval architects and engineers drew on a wealth of relevant experience, data and expertise when developing the research vessel’s design. Formed in 1994, IMC and its principals have a long interest in, and association with, the fisheries sector.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has established the International Maritime Center 2030 (IMC 2030) Advisory Committee to chart the future directions of Singapore’s IMC. India: Big Push on Coastal Shipping of Thermal Coal under Sagarmala

Mumbai, May 23, 2016: Mumbai has a real opportunity to be developed as an international cruise terminal, said Mr. Sanjay Bhatia, Chairman MbPT at a day-long conference organized by the Urban Development Committee of the Indian Merchants’ Chamber (IMC) in association with Apli Mumbai titled “Mumbai’s PortLands – from Vision to Action” on 23 May 2016 at the BSE in Mumbai. GAC’s Meena Wins IMC Golden Shield Award

The International Maritime Club presented Meena Mathews, GAC’s Regional P&I Manager for the Middle East, with its Excellence in Marine Claims Management accolade at the IMC Excellence Awards ceremony at the Ocean Blue in Sharjah, UAE, this week. Mathews was nominated by the Club’s committee of industry specialists for her work in protection and indemnity and insurance over the last year. Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal Dedicated

The Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans joined a host of elected officials and industry partners today to dedicate the Port’s new $25 million Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal. The terminal, made possible by a $16.7 million federal transportation TIGER grant, has a capacity of moving 160,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) per year by rail. “This new terminal provides a highly efficient option for our customers moving cargo via rail,” said Gary LaGrange, Port President and CEO. The Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant provided about 68 percent of the total funding for the terminal.

IMC to Design New Catamaran for Bali Hai Cruises

Marine tourism operator Bali Hai Cruises has selected International Maritime Consultants (IMC) for the design of its next generation day cruise catamaran. Working closely with Bali Hai Cruises, IMC has developed a design that aims to support the operator’s wide range of operations, which includes a variety of tourism experiences from Benoa Harbour, such as day cruises to a water activities pontoon off Nusa Lembongan, day sailing trips, ocean rafting trips on high-speed rigid inflatables and evening dinner cruises.

Sustainable Shipping Initiative leans on shipping ahead of COP21

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) is stepping up pressure on the shipping industry ahead of the COP21 Climate Change Conference in Paris, says The Chamber of Shipping of British Columbia. SSI want the IMO to support the UNFCCC global CO2 reduction targets on the basis that climate change is one of the biggest risks to the future of global trade and to the shipping industry. In its response, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has pointed out that mandatory CO2 reduction measures already adopted by the IMO combined with the aggressive fuel efficiency measures being taken by merchant ships worldwide, will proportionately deliver far more ambitious CO2 reductions than the pledges so far made by governments.
