Australia Bans Second Offender for 90 Days

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has banned the Marshall Island-flagged container ship Big Lilly from Australian waters for 90 days, for serious safety and maintenance issues.Prior to this ban, the ship was detained in Melbourne, after an AMSA Port State control (PSC) inspection identified serious defects with the watertight integrity of the ship’s cargo hatches, main engine and safety equipment.AMSA inspectors identified a long list of defects, and while the seafarers onboard had taken steps to maintain the ship…

ONGC, Coast Guard Prevent Disaster as LPG Tanker Goes Adrift Near Offshore Installations

Indian oil and gas explorer ONGC said Monday it had, together with Coast Guard, helped avert a possible disaster relating to an empty LPG Tanker ‘Gas Yodla’ which went adrift after engine failure in the Arabian Sea on  July 24, 2021. "At 6:35 PM on that day, the LPG tanker reported engine failure and started drifting in the Sea, around 20 nautical miles (nm) from ONGC’s D1 field," ONGC said.The vessel, owned by Dubai-based Shield Marine, was on its way to Fujairah, UAE from Mongla, Bangladesh.

Borealis Acquires Elbsun Containership

Borealis Finance, an Oslo-listed company indirectly owning a fleet of container and bulk vessels, has expanded its fleet.In a stock exchange filing on Tuesday, Borealis Finance said it had acquired the 2012-built, 3,600 TEU containership Elbsun.Borealis Finance paid $11,6 million for the containership. "The company completed the successful delivery and adds the containership to its fleet," Borealis Finance said, without providing further details.According to VesselsValue, the 240 meters long vessel was previously known under the names Lilly Schulte and Niledutch Rhino.  The vessel was previously owned by USC Group, based in Germany.AIS data shows the Elbsun is currently at anchor in Gibraltar.

Containership Aids Offshore Rescue

China COSCO to be First through the Expanded Panama Canal

China COSCO Shipping has won the draw for its container vessel Andronikos to make the ceremonial first transit through the Expanded Panama Canal during the waterway’s inauguration on Sunday, June 26. The vessel, which has a maximum capacity of 9,400 TEUs, is 8.25 meters in beam and 299.98 meters in length. The draw took place this morning at the Panama Canal Administration Building, in which a Notary Public served as witness, among invited attendees. Also participating in the draw was the Norwegian/Swedish shipping line Wallenius Wilhemsen Lines (WWL) with its car carrier Thalatta.

Expanded Panama Canal Begins to Take Transit Reservations

The Panama Canal began accepting transit reservations for Neopanamax vessels for commercial transits through the Expanded Canal starting on June 27, 2016. In light of the upcoming Expansion inauguration date, the Panama Canal will offer four additional slots per day for Neopanamax vessels, in addition to the existing 25 slots of the current Canal. The first reservation was granted to a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker LINDEN PRIDE of Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line), represented by shipping agent Norton Lilly International (Panama), S.A. The vessel has a length of 754.59 ft.

Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) and Norton Lilly International announced that their steamship agency joint venture, Agri Port Services LLC, has acquired Brazilian port and shipping agency Blue Ocean Agencia Maritima Ltda. Cummins to Expand Product Line, Add 200 Jobs

Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) announced that it is expanding its High-Horsepower Technical Center and high-horsepower engine product line at its manufacturing facility in Seymour. The expansion of the center will provide the company with more opportunities for producing high-horsepower clean-diesel and natural gas engines in the future. Mark Levett, Vice President and General Manager  High-Horsepower Business, made the announcement at the plant and was joined by Indiana Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman, U.S. Rep. Baron Hill and several members of local and state government representing the Seymour area. Cummins plans to invest approximately $100m in the expansion at the Seymour plant, which is expected to result in approximately 200 engineering and manufacturing jobs over the next five years.

Rickmers-Linie, Hamburg, Germany, has announced the appointment of Bill Woods to the role of President/CEO of Houston-based Rickmers-Linie America, effective November 1, 2002. Woods has more than 28 years of experience working in the transportation industry. At a recent meeting of their board of Directors in Vancouver, British Columbia, the Maritime Information Services of North America (MISNA) elected a new slate of officers for 2001. Stepping down as president after three consecutive terms is Capt. Manny Aschemeyer, executive director for the Marine Exchange of Los Angeles-Long Beach Harbor. Aschemeyer is a founding director for MISNA and has been responsible for bringing the organization through a new period of growth and industry outreach. Aschemeyer, a graduate of the California Maritime Academy, has had a long career within the maritime industry and holds an active Master Mariners License (unlimited). Before joining the Marine Exchange, Aschemeyer was vice president of customer service and marketing with Stevedoring Services of America.

WCI Reflects on Inland Waterways Industry in 2006

As the inland waterways industry looks back on 2006 and forward to 2007, Waterways Council, Inc. • President Bush’s FY 2007 proposed budget requested a record level of federal funding for 11 Inland Waterways Trust Fund (IWTF)-financed projects. The budget request proposed FY ’07 spending of $394 million for Inland Waterways Trust Fund financed projects, of which $197 million would come from the dedicated Inland Waterways Trust Fund. The remainder would come from general treasury funds, as required under current law. The President’s FY ‘07 budget request is the highest funding recommendation for IWTF funded projects since cost-sharing legislation was enacted into law in 1986.

Industry veteran Joseph F. Daly, dies at 91

Longtime industry veteran Joseph F. Daly passed away on April 2, 2005. He was 91 years old. Joseph F. Daly began his career in the transportation industry in 1947 when he joined F. W. Hartmann directly out of the armed forces. A veteran of the US Army, Daly enlisted at age 17 and returned from active duty with the rank of Captain after fighting in the Pacific during WWII. Daly later served as President of F. W. Hartmann, a major steamship agent and freight broker that represented Hansa Line, National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia, Black Star line, Maritima Andina and others. F.W. Hartmann, together with Norton Lilly, would later form Containership Agency Inc. (CAI), a steamship agency representing Italian Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company.
