AAL Kembla's Maiden Call at Hamburg Port

Port of Hamburg welcomed the ‘AAL Kembla’ on her first call in Germany’s largest universal port. She berthed at C. Steinweg’s multi-purpose Süd-West-Terminal.AAL Shipping is deploying the heavy-lift/project cargo ship on its new monthly liner service connecting ports in Europe, the Middle East, India and Asia. The service is overseen by AAL’s Hamburg office, opened in 2012, which also offers tailormade tramp chartering shipping to all regions in the world. Built in 2011, the ‘AAL Kembla’ is one of the carrier’s second generation A-class multi-purpose, heavy-lift vessels. She is 193.81 meters long and 29.1 meters wide, with a draft of 9.2 meters. The vessel has four shipboard cranes and a maximum lift capacity of 700 tons.

Hamburg Süd Christens First Ship in the U.S.

For the first time in the shipping company’s history, Hamburg Süd has celebrated the christening of a ship in the U.S. The ceremony to name the 3,800 TEU container ship Cap Corrientes was held on August 23 in the Port of San Francisco. The ship’s sponsor is Ofelia Gallo, the wife of Joseph E. Gallo, President and CEO of the E.&J. Gallo Winery in Modesto, California. The ceremony was also attended by Dr. Heino Schmidt, Member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, and Alexander Oetker representing the Oetker family. The container ship was built by Taizhou Catic Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Ltd. in China for the account of Vilmaris Management GmbH of Hamburg/Germany and is on a long-term charter with Hamburg Süd.

Hapag-Lloyd Celebrates East Asia to Australia Milestone

Hapag used Far Eastern motifs to advertise its East Asia services.

In 1886, the up-and-coming German economy needed regular liner services connecting it with the new growth markets, in addition to efficient postal services around the world. To this end, the German Reich provided subsidies for the first Reichspost steamship liner services to East Asia and Australia totalling five million German mark annually with the aim of quite literally flying the flag in regions important for future growth.
