As in 2016, Germany and Greece top the list of country dumpers in 2017, according to new data released today by the NGO Shipbreaking Platform. German owners, including banks and ship funds, beached 50 vessels out of a total of 53 sold for demolition. Greek owners were responsible for the highest absolute number of ships sold to South Asian shipbreaking yards in 2017: 51 ships in total. Since the Platform’s first compilation of data in 2009, Greek shipping companies have unceasingly topped the list of owners that opt for dirty and dangerous shipbreaking. Despite increased pressure for safe and clean ship recycling from Norwegian investors and authorities, in 2017, the number of Norwegian-owned ships scrapped on the beach was on the rise: 18 ended up in Alang, Gadani and Chittagong.

According to the NGO Shipbreaking Platform 239 end-of-life ships were sold for breaking in the first quarter of 2016. Seventy-nine per cent of end-of-life ships ended up on South Asian beaches, making this quarter one of the worst ones in the last years for non-beaching yards around the world. Out of 189 vessels that reached the shores of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, 127 were bulk carriers. As opposed to 2015 trends, India has again become the favorite final destination. 68 ships sold to South Asia in the first quarter of 2016 were owned by EU owners. Greek owners topped the list with 40 ships sold to South Asian breakers. German owners followed with 16 ships.

Rickmers-Linie is to take delivery of two 20,000dwt multi-purpose/heavy-lift newbuildings in 2015, to be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China. Both of these multi-purpose vessels will be equipped with two 450-tonne cranes and one 120-tonne crane. The two main cranes will enable them to load up to 900 tonnes in a single lift. Construction supervision and technical management will be the responsibility of Rickmers Shipmanagement while asset and commercial management will be undertaken by Rickmers Reederei. Even for Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the world’s largest shipyard group, it was a remarkable occasion. In a quadruple naming ceremony at HHI’s Ulsan shipyard on July 2, Rickmers Group christened four ultra-large container ships (ULCS) of 13,100 TEU each. Each of the four ships, Pearl Rickmers, Ruby Rickmers, Aqua Rickmers and Coconee Rickmers, has a service speed of 24.3 knots. They have been chartered longterm to Maersk Line and will join Maersk’s “E-class” as Maersk Edinburgh, Maersk Emden, Maersk Eindhoven and Maersk Essen.

Reportedly the world´s largest full spade rudder, engineered by Becker Marine Systems, has been recently been successfully installed on the first of a series of 8,400 TEU container vessels currently building at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea. The vessel is owned by Norddeutsche Vermögen and will be chartered to Hapag Lloyd. The installed twisted TLKSR® rudder measures 67 m2 and is designed for a speed of about 26 knots. Becker’s TLKSR Twisted Leading Edge rudders are designed to avoid rudder induced cavitation erosion that can damage conventional semi-spade rudders on these fast vessel types. In 2005 Becker Marine Systems, whose head office is located in Hamburg, Germany, will supply more than 36 TLKSR rudders for large and fast vessels worldwide.

Hyundai Mipo Dockyard held a naming ceremony for a 4300 TEU Class Containership, Hull No. 0408, the first of five 4300 TEU Panamax containerships ordered by E.R. Schiffahrt GmbH & CIE. KG of Germany. This containership was named Ital Mattina Mattina by the ship owner. Senior Executive Vice President of HMD, Kim Choon-gon, and many representatives of E.R. Shiffahrt attended the ceremony. On June 25th there was another naming ceremony for Hull No. 0320. This vessel is the second of two 3450 TEU Class containerships ordered by Rickmers Reederei GmbH & CIE. KG of Germany. The ship owner named the ship Ital Fortuna and it was delivered on June 27th.

Hanjin Heavy Industries won orders totaling $294 million to build 10 ships for a Dutch firm, a German firm and one other European company. Hanjin Heavy said in a statement that Dutch firm Vroon B.V. ordered two 1,600 teu containerships and two 30,000 dwt chemical ships, worth a total of $96 million. It said Germany's Rickmers Reederei GmbH & Cie KG had ordered four 1,200-teu containerships worth $78 million and one other European company had ordered two 5,600 teu containerships worth $120 million. Hanjin declined to give the name of the other European company. Officials said the company has received orders for 20 ships so far this year, including these 10 ships, and had reached its target for the year of $550 million worth of orders so far.
