Pipeline from California Offshore Oil Spill was Moved 32 Meters Along Sea Floor

A unified command has been established to respond to and clean up the oil spill off the California coast.

A section of the oil pipeline that burst off the Southern California coast was displaced 105 feet (32 meters) across the ocean floor, officials said on Tuesday, fueling speculation that a ship's anchor may have caused the environmental disaster.The revelation came as the U.S. Coast Guard and drilling company Amplify Energy Corp came under further scrutiny about the time it took to respond to the spill, amid reports that mariners first reported seeing oil in the water on Friday night…

Ship Strikes Dredging Pipeline in Sabine Pass

Several vessels, including two oil tankers and one carrying liquefied natural gas, were stalled and unable to enter the Sabine Pass shipping channel near the Texas-Louisiana border due to draft restrictions, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Thursday.Port Arthur's Vessel Traffic Service implemented 32-foot restrictions on draft, or vessel depth, on Wednesday, after a 24-inch steel dredge pipeline was struck and pulled out to sea by a ship moving through the Sabine Pass Channel to the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, the Coast Guard said in a notice.As much as 1,000 feet of pipeline is missing, prompting the limits on vessel draft in order that surveys could be carried out to locate the displaced line…

The Big Ship the Big U, the one that didn’t sink. The S.S. She is waiting for a rescue that may never come from an appointment with the scrap yard looming large on her summer schedule. And that would be a shame according to her many supporters, not the least of which was the late newsman and sailor, Walter Cronkite.

When a Mariner Builds a Tug

Captain Jack Davies is the consummate boatman. Davies wears a number of “hats” in the marine industry, and often he is aboard one of the tugs with which he has some ownership involvement. He can be found twisting wrenches in the engine room, working on deck, or in command on the bridge. Lately he has been overseeing the construction of his latest tug. The new McIlwain-designed Azimuthing Stern Drive (ASD) tug will be 64.75-feet in length, with a 27-foot beam. Of the relatively large beam for the length, Davies explains, “Adding beam is a way to improve the stability.

Washburn & Doughty Delivers Mary Ann Moran

On September 1, 2010, Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. delivered the Mary Ann Moran, a 121 ft x 36 ft x 18 ft Intercon Tug, to Moran Towing Corporation. Designed by Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp., Mary Ann Moran is the fourth vessel built by Washburn & Doughty to this design and delivered to Moran Towing. According to the vessel’s captain, Mr. Jake Jarrell, “I can say that this boat is by far one of the best vessels I have ever had the pleasure of working on in over 30 years in the industry.

Bradford Marine Bahamas Completes New Docks

Bradford Grand Bahama, Ltd., one of the Bradford Marine family of companies, announced the completion of 1,200 lineal feet of new docks on the west side of their Freeport, Grand Bahama shipyard. These new docks accommodate yachts and commercial vessels of all sizes, including the largest mega-yachts and super-yachts, and they have full utilities, drainage and work aprons. Construction of the docks utilized almost 2,000 feet of steel pipe and 3,000 feet of 16 inch steel I-beam. Paul Engle, Bradford Marine Bahamas’ President, said “We are very excited about these new docks and our ability to service even more mega and super-yachts and commercial vessels. Bradford Marine Bahamas’ shipyard in Freeport, Grand Bahama has a 35-foot depth, a 1,200-tonne floating drydock, and a 150-tonne Travelift.

Chuck’s Boats Build Submarine Handling Tug

Over the last six years, Chuck's Boat and Drive of Longview, Washington has delivered almost 40 small tugs to the U.S. Navy. They range in size from 19 to 40 ft, are powered by single and twin Cummins engines, and are designed to fulfill missions that include many in-port duties, including moving heavy security booms and docking naval vessels. These hard-working craft have are based on the durable steel hulls that the company has delivered to commercial operators in the logging business for over 40 years.

New Handysize Tug Completes Seatrials

Great Lakes Shipyard has successfully completed seatrials of the “HANDY-ONE”, the first tug of the new HANDYSIZE Class to be delivered to TUGZ International, LLC, the well-known and successful owner and charterer of a fleet of Z-Class tractor tugs. Both the new HANDYSIZE Class and the Z-Class tugs were designed for Tugz by Jensen Maritime Consultants, Seattle. The sea trials, including speed and endurance trials were performed in the icy waters of Lake Eire under freezing winter conditions.

Panama City, Florida for a pair of New Jersey brothers. the group of four fishermen. Cummins KTA19M3 main engines rated for 640 HP at 1800 RPM. 60-inch propellers through Twin Disc MG5170 gears with 5.03:1 reduction. M3 engine will power a pump for loosening the sea bottom to facilitate the dredging process. Electrical needs are met with a pair of Cummins-powered 45 Kw generator sets. supplied by Airline Hydraulics. 85 gallons for lube oil. Accommodation for a crew of four is provided. smaller at 75 x 23.5 x 12. 60x54-inch propeller through a Twin Disc MG5170 with the same 5.03:1 reduction. Cummins-powered 45 Kw generator set will be installed for electrical needs. engine will power the dredging clam pump on this boat. water 1000 gallons and lube oil 85 gallons.

Small Yard, Big Boat

The Bayou Country of Louisiana has a reputation as a place where great boats are built in small yards. When Richard Adams Sr. opened his Lockport Fabrication yard on the bank of Bayou Lafourche at Lockport in 1979 he became a part of that tradition. Now, at 72 years of age, he comes in every day to work with his son Richard “Dickie” Adams Jr. Over the years the two men have launched a lot of boats from their yard. Recently, when they launched the supply vessel Bertha D stern first, her166-foot length nearly reached to the opposite bank of the bayou. Designed by naval architect Frank Basil of Houma Louisiana for owners Supreme Services also of Houma, the boat has a 36-ft. beam and a 14-ft. molded depth. The hull is fabricated from 3/4 and 1/2-inch steel plate.

Shipbuilding R&D Supported

The National Shipbuilding Research Program Advanced Shipbuilding Enterprise (NSRP ASE) announced last month the selection of four new research projects as part of the Navy/Industry co-funded portfolio of 33 projects. The four new projects are valued at $10.3M, including industry cost share. Project: A Lean Enterprise Model for U.S. Participants: Atlantic Marine Holding Co., Todd Pacific Shipyards, Bath Iron Works, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and five others. Funding: 3.8M NSRP ASE, $3.8M industry cost share. Description: The principal objective of this project is to complete a comprehensive model for the application of lean manufacturing concepts to multiple market segments of the U.S. shipbuilding and repair industry.
