BMT Group Created from Merger

The BMT Group, maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy, announced the merger of three companies, BMT SeaTech, BMT Argoss and the Southampton and Polish businesses of BMT Cordah. The merged entity will retain the name of BMT Argoss. The capabilities of each company are being brought together to offer customers full turn-key solutions. In the Oil and Gas sector, BMT is working with oil majors to provide environmental information, particularly in harsh environments such as strong currents, high waves, ice, etc. Information systems are providing input at the planning and design stages as well as supporting day to day operations.

Kiel Canal Pilots Install PC Rembrandt

On Jan. 2, BMT SeaTech Ltd, provider of maritime products and consulting services, and a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, announced the successful installation of its PC Rembrandt ship simulation system at the headquarters of the Kiel Canal Pilots Association in Brunsbuttel, Northern Germany. Current training of Kiel Canal’s 123 pilots takes place at the full bridge simulator of the Maritime Academy of Bremen. However, with up to 140 vessel movements a day and growing, it is becoming increasingly difficult for pilots to be removed from the associations watch rotation plan.

CITIS 2002 Awards Honor Innovators

Communications and IT companies in shipping were toasted at the CITIS 2002 Awards in London in March with top honors going to a daily electronic newspaper, an evacuation simulator, a collision avoidance trainer and a message management concept. In addition to innovation awards in four categories, International Maritime Organization secretary general William O’Neil received a lifetime achievement award for overseeing the introduction of the Global Maritime Distress & Safety System. The winners, selected by expert judges from a shortlist of three in each category, were announced at a gala dinner at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre during the sixth CITIS event, organized by Lloyd’s List Events.
