Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced that SSN 798, a Virginia-class attack submarine, will bear the name USS Massachusetts during a taped video message at Gillette Stadium. The submarine will be named to honor the history its namesake state has with the Navy. This history extends to 1775, before the official founding of the United States, to the time when George Washington founded the Continental Navy in an effort to protect the 13 colonies from British attack. By 1800, six years after the establishment of the Department of the Navy, one of its first 14 ship yards was incorporated in Boston. And in 1836, The Boston Naval Hospital, one of the first of three hospitals dedicated solely to the care of naval personnel, opened.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) was awarded a $224 million modification to an existing contract for advanced planning of the refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73). The work will be performed at the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division. The contract funds continued planning work for the RCOH as well as the procurement of long-lead materials, including items such as pumps, breakers, valves and steel to support fabrication of structural units.

A Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew hoisted three fishermen this morning from their disabled vessel that ran aground near Ship Island. Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans was notified at 9:53 a.m. by the crewmembers of the fishing vessel Nautilus, homeported in Pascagoula, Miss., that they had been disabled and adrift since Friday and had recently run aground. A helicopter was dispatched to the scene where the crew lowered a rescue swimmer and basket to the fishing vessel. All three crewmembers of the Nautilus were hoisted from the boat and brought aboard the helicopter for transfer to Gulfport International Airport for further assistance.

The Sun Herald has reported that Ship Island Excursions, a Gulfport harbor-based passenger ferry service, announced that it would sell one of its three ships because of a dramatic falloff in business. The company has put its 100-ft., 300-passenger capacity Captain Peteup for sale with ship broker Pinnacle Marine Corp. for $1 million. The cupola of the Ship Island Lighthouse was delivered and placed on the top of the lighthouse this morning by a helicopter from USCG Air Station New Orleans. The 900 lbs. copula was placed on the newly reconstructed lighthouse. The friends of the National Seashore Foundation, National Park Service and the Naval Seabee's are coordinating the project. Over the last six months, USCG Station Gulfport and Aids to Navigation Team Gulfport assisted in the delivery of supplies and personnel to the island for the project. There has been a lighthouse on Ship Island, Miss. since 1850's. At that time a predecessor of the modern Day Coast Guard, the U.S. Lighthouse Service, manned it. The lighthouse stood at the spot until is was accidentally burned down in 1971.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans and a boat crew from Station Gulfport are searching for a Northport, Ala., man that fell overboard from the Carnival cruise ship Conquest between 12 and 1 a.m. this morning. The accident occurred in a stretch of the Gulfport ship canal between Cat Island and Ship Island. The crews of motor vessel Pattiesmack, a Gulfport pilot boat and boats from the Harrison County Sheriff's Office, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, and the National Park Service are assisting with the search. The Conquest safely moored in Gulfport at about 1:30 a.m. this morning. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Mobile is working with the Harrison County Sheriff's Office to investigate this incident.
