Offshore Installation Ship Island Victory Delivered

Island Offshore took delivery of Island Victory, a new offshore installation vessel, at VARD Langsten today (Friday, February 7, 2020).Upon delivery the vessel will head straight into operation, spending a couple of weeks in the spot market, before commencing a series of contracts – in the Barents Sea and the Gulf of Mexico – securing work for the vessel potentially throughout October this year.“We experience great interest for this vessel,” said Tommy Walaunet, Managing Director, Island Offshore Management AS. “Having jobs lined up in coming months, confirms this and is highly appreciated.

1848 - The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ends the Mexican-American War and establishes the boundaries between the two republics. 1862 - Capt. David G. Farragut, commander of his flagship, the screw sloop of war Hartford, departs Hampton Roads for Ship Island, Miss., where Farragut takes command of the Western Gulf Blockading Squadron in preparation for the assault on New Orleans. 1938 - While piloting a PBY-2 aircraft in a tactical exercise off California, Lt. Carlton B. Hutchins collides with another VP-11 PBY-2.

SSN 798 Submarine Named USS Massachusetts

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced that SSN 798, a Virginia-class attack submarine, will bear the name USS Massachusetts during a taped video message at Gillette Stadium. The submarine will be named to honor the history its namesake state has with the Navy. This history extends to 1775, before the official founding of the United States, to the time when George Washington founded the Continental Navy in an effort to protect the 13 colonies from British attack. By 1800, six years after the establishment of the Department of the Navy, one of its first 14 ship yards was incorporated in Boston. And in 1836, The Boston Naval Hospital, one of the first of three hospitals dedicated solely to the care of naval personnel, opened.

HII Wins Aircraft Carrier Advanced Planning Contract

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) was awarded a $224 million modification to an existing contract for advanced planning of the refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73). The work will be performed at the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division. The contract funds continued planning work for the RCOH as well as the procurement of long-lead materials, including items such as pumps, breakers, valves and steel to support fabrication of structural units.

Alternative to Diesel Strengthens as Barriers Continue to Fall. From the earliest days of mechanically propelled ships, fuel use has been evolving. Starting with wood, fuel changed to coal, which held sway for many years. Oil began to be used in the late nineteenth century and was clearly the dominate marine fuel of the twentieth century. Environmental shortcomings of fuel oil, particularly traditional heavy bunkers, were brought under increasing scrutiny as the twentieth century came to a close.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) completed a significant work performance milestone on the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) with the installation of the final section of the ship's main mast. The carrier is undergoing a refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at the company's Shipbuilding sector in Newport News, Va., the nation's sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. An important aspect of this availability includes modernizing the ship's island with the latest technology and installing a new main mast.

Coast Guard Airlifts Three from Vessel

A Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew hoisted three fishermen this morning from their disabled vessel that ran aground near Ship Island. Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans was notified at 9:53 a.m. by the crewmembers of the fishing vessel Nautilus, homeported in Pascagoula, Miss., that they had been disabled and adrift since Friday and had recently run aground. A helicopter was dispatched to the scene where the crew lowered a rescue swimmer and basket to the fishing vessel. All three crewmembers of the Nautilus were hoisted from the boat and brought aboard the helicopter for transfer to Gulfport International Airport for further assistance.

Princess Cruises Specifies Enviro Engines

An agreement was recently reached between Princess Cruises, the engine builder Wärtsilä and the shipyard Fincantieri that Newbuilding 6100 at the said shipyard will be equipped with Wärtsilä Common Rail engines. The engine configuration is four 12-cylinder engines and two 8-cylinder engines, all of the Wärtsilä 46 type in diesel-electric configuration, giving the ship the total installed power of 67.2 MW. The Hull 6100 is a modified version of earlier ships at the same shipyard, i.e. the "Carribean Princess" class. The passenger capacity is 3100. The first newbuilding with common rail engines, the "Coral Princess", has now been in operation for one and a half year, and the engines have passed 10,000 h of operation. The sister ship, "Island Princess", has more than 5,000 h of operation.

Ship Island Excursions to Sell Ferry

The Sun Herald has reported that Ship Island Excursions, a Gulfport harbor-based passenger ferry service, announced that it would sell one of its three ships because of a dramatic falloff in business. The company has put its 100-ft., 300-passenger capacity Captain Peteup for sale with ship broker Pinnacle Marine Corp. for $1 million. Selling the ferry will leave Ship Island Excursions with the larger 374-passenger capacity Gulf Islander and the 200-passenger capacity Pan American Clipper. Source: Sun Herald

Top of Lighthouse Delivered by USCG

The cupola of the Ship Island Lighthouse was delivered and placed on the top of the lighthouse this morning by a helicopter from USCG Air Station New Orleans. The 900 lbs. copula was placed on the newly reconstructed lighthouse. The friends of the National Seashore Foundation, National Park Service and the Naval Seabee's are coordinating the project. Over the last six months, USCG Station Gulfport and Aids to Navigation Team Gulfport assisted in the delivery of supplies and personnel to the island for the project. There has been a lighthouse on Ship Island, Miss. since 1850's. At that time a predecessor of the modern Day Coast Guard, the U.S. Lighthouse Service, manned it. The lighthouse stood at the spot until is was accidentally burned down in 1971.

Coast Guard Searches for Man Overboard

A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans and a boat crew from Station Gulfport are searching for a Northport, Ala., man that fell overboard from the Carnival cruise ship Conquest between 12 and 1 a.m. this morning. The accident occurred in a stretch of the Gulfport ship canal between Cat Island and Ship Island. The crews of motor vessel Pattiesmack, a Gulfport pilot boat and boats from the Harrison County Sheriff's Office, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, and the National Park Service are assisting with the search. The Conquest safely moored in Gulfport at about 1:30 a.m. this morning. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Mobile is working with the Harrison County Sheriff's Office to investigate this incident.
