Alabama Shipyard to Repair MSC Tanker

World Marine of Alabama (WMA), a division of World Marine, LLC, competitively bid and won a contract to dry-dock and repair the USNS Lawrence H. Gianella (T-AOT-1125), a Military Sealift Command (MSC) tanker operated by Ocean Shipholdings, Inc. World Marine, LLC purchased all the assets of Signal International in December 2015, including the Mobile, Alabama-based shipyard. World Marine remains one of the safest shipyards in the country, with its Alabama facility boasting zero accidents for over 460 days, and an OSHA total recordable injury rate (TRIR) of 0.0 for 2015.

The United States Naval Ship (USNS) Watson is one of the large, medium-speed, roll-on, roll-off (LMSR) ships that have significantly expanded the nation’s sealift capacity. The Watson has a considerable amount of machinery including main engines, generators and cranes that need oil tested on a regular basis to detect potential problems and eliminate the possibility of a catastrophic failure. The test kits used in the past were time-consuming and their accuracy was questionable. The (USNS) Watson is operated by Ocean Shipholdings, Inc. (OSI) under contract to Military Sealift Command.

Ocean Shipholding Security Ops Agreement

The Maritime Administration has approved the award of a new Maritime Security Program operating agreement to Ocean Shipholdings, Inc., a U.S. citizen-owned company.  The new agreement, MA/MSP-108, provides for the operation of the product tanker Baltic Mariner in the MSP.  Under the agreement, the vessel is required to re-flag under U.S. documentation and employ U.S. citizen merchant mariners. In addition to other specific commercial and military criteria, Ocean Shipholdings qualified for the award based on its status as a U.S. citizen-owned company as defined in Section 2 of the Shipping Act of 1916.

Grasso Elected President WISTA USA

At its annual general meeting in in May, Jeanne M. Grasso was elected President of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) . As President of WISTA USA, Ms. Grasso will serve as a member of the six-person elected board, which includes: Vice President Linda Turnbow (Ocean Shipholdings, Inc.); Treasurer Kathleen Haines (formerly of OMI Corporation); Membership Secretary Parker Harrison (American Steamship Owners Mutual Protection and Indemnity Association, Inc.); Recording Secretary Julie D. Kuchta (Bowen, Miclette & Britt); and National WISTA Association liaison,  Mary T. Reilly (Hill, Betts & Nash, LLP). Grasso, a respected and active member of the maritime community, has held leadership positions in various maritime organizations.

OSI Signs Agreement for Shuttle Tanker

Ocean Shipholdings, Inc. (OSI) has signed an agreement with ConocoPhillips and Samsung Heavy Industries. This agreement grants OSI the rights to the GoMAX 550 shuttle tanker design for transporting crude oil from the deep-water Gulf of Mexico directly to U.S. refineries. The diesel-electric powered, dynamically positioned 80,000 dwt double-hulled tanker design will have a capacity of 550,000 barrels of oil which can be loaded from various floating systems including Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels. The GoMAX will be constructed to meet the Common Structural Rules (CSR) for Tankers. Designed by Samsung specifically for production in U.S.

USCG Accepts Benkert Award Nominees

The U.S. Coast Guard is soliciting for applications for the biennial Rear Admiral William M. Benkert, Marine Environmental Protection Award for Excellence. The program recognizes corporations and businesses involved in marine facility or vessel operations that have demonstrated sustained excellence and outstanding achievement in protecting the marine environment. It also encourages innovations in operations, maintenance, cargo handling, refueling, training, and provides a means for award recipients to share their successful methods and techniques with others in industry. Applications will be accepted from December 01, 2005 to March 31, 2006. MarAd Ends Hurricane Relief Effort

The Training Ship Empire State left New Orleans on Friday, March 3, marking the end of an unprecedented six-month mission for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MarAd). Ten of the agency’s ships were activated to aid in recovery and relief efforts in Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This marked the first time the ships of MARAD’s Ready Reserve Force were activated at the request of the Secretary of Transportation to deal with a domestic emergency, and the first time training ships provided by MARAD to State maritime academies were pressed into service to provide food and shelter. Coast Guard Environmental Awards

The US Coast Guard announced the winners of the Rear Admiral William M. Benkert Marine Environmental Protection Awards for 2006. In the large business vessels operations category, the winners are Ocean Shipholdings of Houston; Marathon Petroleum Co. of Ashland, Kentucky; and Matson Navigation Co. of Oakland. In the large business facility operator category, the winners are Dow Chemical Co. of Freeport, Texas; BP Cooper River of Wando, South Carolina; Odjfell Terminals of Houston; , and Todd Shipyard of Seattle. In the foreign business vessel operator category, the winner is BP Shipping of the United Kingdom. In the small business vessel operations category, the winner is US Shipping Partners of Edison, New Jersey.
