Coast Guard Receives Proposal for Bridge Project Over Port of Portland

The Commander of the 13th Coast Guard District has received a request for a preliminary navigation clearance determination (PNCD) from the Interstate Bridge Replacement Program, aka Portland, Ore., to Vancouver, Wash., I-5 twin bridge (LLNR 11258).A PNCD is a first step in the U.S. Coast Guard Bridge permitting process. US Discussions Target Navigation Tech

The U.S. Coast Guard, along with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will hold nationwide public discussions on navigational aid technology and how it will affect the future of America's waterways. The Future of Navigation-21st Century Waterways public listening sessions will be held in several locations across the country and will provide venues for open communications between various federal agencies and U.S. Maritime Transportation System stakeholders to discuss the joint federal agency initiative to use modern technology to support a safer, more efficient, more secure and environmentally-sound Marine Transportation System.

Coast Guard Hosts Homeland Security Exercise

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) hosted a port security exercise on April 5 at Coast Guard Sector New York on Staten Island to evaluate preparedness, prevention and the ability to respond to and recover from a terrorist-related incident. The Port Security Training Exercises Program (PortSTEP) is a national program focused on building improvement links within Area Maritime Security (AMS) Committees throughout the country. These committees assist Coast Guard Captains of the Port in writing, reviewing and updating Area Maritime Security Plans in addition to supporting other maritime transportation system stakeholders that depend upon the port being secure.
