Neander Names Whiting as New Marketing Director

German outboard manufacturer Neander announced it has welcomed Richard Whiting on board to join the team as marketing director. Port of Hueneme Hi-Tech Security Drill Deemed a Success

The security drill was the first since the rollout of the Port’s new Maritime Advanced Systems and Technology Lab (MAST) program and involved an Offshore Platform Security Threat Awareness and Response Program exercise (OPSTAR) conducted by the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Asymmetric Warfare and the U.S. Coast Guard. Operation Big Tow – Great Lakes

The Ninth Coast Guard District will commence Operation Big Tow within the Great Lakes area of responsibility to ensure commercial tugs are compliant with rules, regulations and licensing procedures. The Coast Guard is conducting Operation Big Tow as a continuous safety message to the maritime industry community. The intent of this operation is strictly a marine safety focused operation being conducted to ensure that individuals operating Uninspected Towing Vessel (UTVs) are properly licensed. A Marine Safety Alert message was released in September 2008 by the Assistant Commandant for Marine Safety, Security and Stewardship in Washington, D.C. in response to a recent collision between a cargo vessel and a loaded oil barge in the Mississippi River.

Coast Guard to Respond to Cosco Busan Spill

U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen announced that the Coast Guard has begun a comprehensive review of its response to the Cosco Busan oil spill in San Francisco Bay after the ship allided with the San Francisco Bay Bridge Nov. At the direction of the Commandant, the Coast Guard's Chief of Staff chartered an incident specific preparedness review (ISPR) that includes membership of federal, local, state, and industry stakeholders. The review will examine the implementation and effectiveness of the interagency area contingency plan - which guides how San Francisco Bay-area stakeholders respond to an oil or hazardous material spill -- and its integration with other applicable contingency plans at the federal, state, and local levels.
