Desulfurization of Exhaust Gases in Shipping

The first ferry to be retrofitted is the Color Line Super Speed 2, which will be carried out in April this year.

Are shipowners prepared to enter SECA zones? Due to existing regulations on air exhaust emissions from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and with the European Union working towards an alignment with IMO MARPOL Annex VI, the marine industry will need to choose a path on how to achieve compliance, a choice that will have tremendous impact on shipping. Legislation has already had an effect on the fuel markets in regulated areas, as fuel prices are expected to increase even further in 2015 when the 0.1% fuel sulfur limit enters into force.

ABB S2S System for Color Line Ferry

ABB, a global provider of power and energy solutions, is to supply a complete Shore to Ship Power (S2S) system to Color Line’s ro-pax ferry, SuperSpeed1. The 34,231 tons gross SuperSpeed1, built by Aker Finnyards at Rauma in Finland, has been in service on the Kristiansand – Hitshals route since 2008 and is the third Color Line vessel to be equipped with ABB’s system, after the Color Magic and Color Fantasy. Wärtsilä Scrubbers for Three More Color Line Ships

Wärtsilä has been contracted to retrofit its Open Loop Scrubber systems on three additional vessels owned by Color Line, Norway's largest cruise and ferry operator. With the latest contract, Wärtsilä's now has 36 shipsets, totalling 75 scrubber units, either already installed or in the pipeline. Each vessel will be fitted with four systems designed to rid the ships' exhaust gases of harmful sulphur oxide (SOx) and particulate emissions. Norwegenkai Expansion Work Completed

Work on extending operational areas at the Port of Kiel’s Norwegenkai Terminal has now been completed. Construction was officially brought to a close at a ceremony involving the State of Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of Economics, Science and Transport, Jost de Jager; the Mayor of the Federal State Capital of Kiel, Peter Todeskino; and Dr Dirk Claus, Managing Director of the Seehafen Kiel GmbH & Co. KG. “The extension of Norwegenkai means that the potential of the state capital’s port has been increased yet again,” said Jost de Jager. “Urgently-needed new interim stowage space is now immediately available to accommodate rising cargo traffic to and from Norway.

Color Line, Aker Yards Sign for Cruise Ship

Color Line AS and Aker Yards signed a letter of intent (LOI) for the order of a second ship, a sister vessel to M/S Color Fantasy, the world's largest cruise ship with car decks delivered from Aker Finnyards the 3rd of December 2004. The contract value is at the same level as for M/S Color Fantasy, approximately EUR 300 million. The agreement is subject to certain conditions, including Color Line and Aker Yards board approval. The contract is anticipated to be made effective within the second quarter of 2005. "We are extremely pleased to continue our strong relationship with Color Line by building this sister vessel to M/S Color Fantasy.” says Yrjö Julin, President of Aker Finnyards.

Aker Yards to Build a Second Cruise Ship for Color Line

Aker Yards and Color Line have signed a contract to build a sister vessel to MS Color Fantasy, the worlds largest cruise ship with car deck, that was delivered in December 2004. The agreement includes a buyers option to purchase a third vessel. The new vessel will be named MS Color Magic, and will traffic the route Oslo - Kiel as from the fourth quarter 2007. The contract value is EUR 325 million. MS Color Magic will be Color Lines second cruise ship with a car deck, and will have a wide variety of entertainment and conference areas. The number of cabins will be higher than on Color Fantasy. The vessel will be 223.7 meters long and 35 meters wide. MS Color Magic will be built partly at the yard in Turku, and partly at the yard in Rauma.

Keel Laying of Color Line’s Second Cruise Ship

The keel of the cruise ship to be named Color Magic was laid at Aker Yards. Both Chairman of the Board Olav Nils Sunde and CEO Trond Kleivdal from Color Line were present, hosted by Yrjö Julin, President of Aker Yards, Cruise & Ferries. The contract of building this vessel, worth $418m, was signed on May 27, 2005, and secures work at the yard for about 1,200 man-years, and about the same number for outside sub-contractors and still more for suppliers of material and components. MS Color Magic will be built partly at the yard in Turku, and partly at the yard in Rauma. Delivery will take place in Rauma in autumn 2007. The vessel to start traffic the route Oslo - Kiel as from the fourth quarter 2007 will be Color Line s second cruise ship with car deck.

Rolls-Royce Wins Orders

Color Line, Viking Line and Tallink have all specified Rolls-Royce CP propeller systems and tunnel thrusters for new vessels they have ordered to be be built in Finland. The value of the contract to Rolls-Royce is about $14.3 million. Color Line (SuperSpeed) has ordered two 1900 passenger ropax vessels capable of almost 30 knots for its services linking Kristiansand and Larvik in Norway with Hirtshals in Denmark. Each vessel will have two 5.25m diameter Kamewa Ulstein ice class 1B controllable pitch propellers with 19.2MW per shaft line. Three tunnel thrusters per ship have also been specified; two rated at 2,400kW each at the bow and a single 1,200kW unit at the stern.

Color Fantasy Undergoes First Inspection

After a fierce international competition, Blohm + Voss Repair has won the order for classification work on the world’s largest cruise ferry with car decks - the M/S Color Fantasy for ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems’ Repair Group. The cruise ferry, which is owned by the Norwegian shipping company Color Line, has been plying between Kiel and Oslo since December 2004. The Color Fantasy, which measures at 224m x 35m x 59m and has a gross tonnage of 74,500, was floated into dock 11 in the morning of January 9 and is scheduled to leave the yard on January 13. Blohm + Voss staff boarded the ship on January 7 in Kiel in order to begin with preparation works. In the course of the 5-day docking period, a considerable amount of conversion and installation work will be carried out.

Aker Yards and Color Line Signs Contract for Superspeed Ferries

The Letter of Intent for two Fast Passenger Day Ferries signed on 2 November by Aker Yards and Color Line will today be confirmed as a firm contract worth approx. EUR 250 million. The contract will be signed at a ceremony onboard M/S Color Fantasy in Oslo today, 11 am. The vessels to be delivered during 2007-2008 are intended for the Denmark-Norway services. The working title "Color Superspeed" indicates that the ferry is designed for a high service speed of 27 knots. The ca. 211 m long and 26 m wide vessels will each have 2,000 lane metres of vehicle space and take 1,800 passengers. The vessels will be built in Finland, at Aker Yards, Rauma, and means 1,600 man years of work for the shipyard.

Aker and Color Line Sign LOI for Ferries

Aker Yards and Color Line have signed a Letter of Intent to build two Passenger Day Ferries during 2007-2008. The contract value is EUR approximately 232 million. The working title "Color Line Superspeed" indicates that the ferry is designed for a high service speed. The ca. 211 m long and 26 m wide vessels would each have 2,000 lane metres of vehicle space and take 1,800 passengers. "A Letter of Intent for two vessels on top of the previous two orders from Color Line we regard as a proof of the excellent cooperation between our two companies". says Yrjö Julin, President of Aker Finnyards and responsible for Cruise & Ferries in Aker Yards. It has also been specified a design agreement for a potential new cruise vessel with a planned delivery spring 2009.
