JLT Mobile Computers Selected by DCT Gdansk

JLT Mobile Computers has delivered 47 of its JLT VERSO+ 10 rugged mobile vehicle computers with the most compact form factor in its class to the new T2 deep-water terminal at DCT Gdansk in Poland. Located in the heart of the Baltic, DCT Gdansk is Poland’s largest container facility, and the only deep-water terminal in the Baltic Sea region.

The rugged mobile vehicle computers, supplied by IT systems engineering company and JLT partner Autepra, have been installed on Kalmar T2 terminal tractors. Running industry leading Navis N4 Terminal Operating System (TOS) software, they form part of a larger development program undertaken by DCT to open a second 650 m long, deep-water berth at the T2 terminal, which will double the handling capacity of DCT Gdansk to 3M TEU per year.

The VERSO+ 10 computers are eminently suitable for container facilities due to multiple facets of their design, including the compact form factor and the virtually unbreakable PowerTouch display, which employs JLT’s revolutionary PCT (projected capacitive touch) technology. For demanding operational applications and harsh environmental extremes, such as those in Gdansk which regularly sees temperatures drop below zero during winter months, using rugged equipment is a necessity to ensure operations are run reliably.

JLT’s unique implementation of PCT technology enables the development of capacitive touch screens that are capable of offering a feature-rich user experience, typically seen in consumer displays, but with unparalleled durability and usability in dry or wet conditions and with or without gloves. The PCT display technology, where the capacitive touch sensor is placed behind a layer of strong, chemically toughened glass, offers outstanding resistance to wear and tear and reduces disruptive computer downtime.

According to Katarzyna Zabkiewicz of DCT Gdansk: “As a container terminal we have to keep pace with technology in order to offer the most effective and efficient service to our many customers. In the same light, computer technology has to keep pace with our needs too, in terms of the functionality we require and the severe operational and environmental demands our applications face. The mobile computers from JLT have been designed with these precise requirements in mind.”

“The project was very challenging as DCT needed the units with very short notice,” explains Tomas Girdzevičius, MD, Autepra. “We fulfilled their request and managed to deliver a complete solution within less than a month.”

Equipped with Intel CPUs, the VERSO+ 10 computer’s small form factor belies its powerful capabilities. With a 64-bit operating system, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and robust, reliable integrated PIFA antennas for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the computers have been developed from the ground up for use in the harshest environments and for business-critical functions. Also, JLT’s entire VERSO range has been validated by Navis as ready for integration into any shipping port or terminal running Navis N4.
