Emanuele Grimaldi Appointed ICS Chairman

LR Gets Italian RO Status

The maritime classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has been awarded recognized organization status by the Italian flag administration and is now authorized to issue statutory certification on its behalf to all seagoing ships sailing with the Italian flag.In line with its new RO status, LR will establish an Italy branch of LR Group Ltd so the classification society can fully support Italy and the country’s shipowners.As LR will be authorised to work on behalf of the Italian flag Administration, owners of Italian-flagged ships will have the opportunity to work with LR for classification and consultancy services and benefit from LR’s extensive technical expertise.By having RO status…

Mediterranean Rescue Operations Strain Shipping

The Wall Street Journal ran a story yesterday describing how the increasing number of seaborne migrants making the journey from Africa to Europe has not only proved to be too much for European coast guards and navies, it now poses a major problem for Mediterranean shipping. Maritime law states that all vessels, including private vessels and huge container ships, must come to the aid of any boat in distress. Italy To Ban Single Skin Tankers From 7 Ports

Italy plans to ban single hull tankers from seven port areas from April 23 to reduce risks of environmental damage, said an anonymous Environment Ministry official said. The official confirmed remarks by Environment Minister Willer Bordon in Genoa earlier this week that the government was preparing a directive aimed at improving safety standards. "This directive represents a notable leap in safety," Bordon said on the sidelines of a seminar on maritime oil traffic organized by local environmental groups. RINA Invests in Crew Training

RINA has invested in crew training in a bid to help owners overcome the major challenge of manning their growing fleets. Today marks the opening of the Manila-based Italian Training Academy Phils Inc, a training school which will provide top-level training and assessment for up to 480 crew members per year. Roberto Cazzulo, Deputy Director of the Marine Division and responsible for International Affairs for RINA says, “The biggest challenge facing shipowners today is a shortage of high-quality crew. Italian owners have been investing heavily in new ships and their fleets are growing, but they need a reliable source of high-quality manpower to crew the ships. RINA has invested in the Academy along with Italian shipowners’ association CONFITARMA, and Manila-based Elburg Ship Management.

Confitarma and Jiangsu Yards Sign Contract

A group of Naples ship owners have come to an agreement with the Chinese yard Jiangsu New Yanagzijang Construction Co. for the building of 16 90,000 ton bulk carriers. Nicola Coccia Confitarma president with a group of Naples ship-owners and representatives of the Chinese yard signed the agreement on June 20. The order was placed by Perseveranza di navigazione,d’Amato di navigazione spa, Gestioni Amatoriali spa, la Giuseppe Bottiglieri di navigazione spa e Liberty Marittime International who thus become de facto partners in the Chinese yard. Promotor of the deal was Confitarma president Nicola Coccia who was able to bring together the needs of a number of owners in a single yard an unusual fact for shipowners but producing an excellent price.
