Officials are working to clear a barge that sunk in Kentucky Lock’s chamber on Saturday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said.The barge carrying gravel hung on the miter sill of the lock, which caused the bow to tip and take on water, lockmaster Caleb Skinner said.Both deckhands that were working at the time remained unharmed during the incident, which occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m.The owner of the barge, Terral River Service, is working with USACE Nashville District and plans to refloat the barge on Tuesday…

On Capitol Hill, October 1 was the first day of 2018, at least for the federal government’s fiscal year. In theory, on 10/1, the federal budget is supposed to be finalized with appropriations – i.e., spending – established for the next year. In practice, of course, it rarely works that way. Budget deliberations frequently last through December. And even on New Year’s Eve, Congress may be forced to vote on a Continuing Resolution to keep the government operating. The 2018 budget is of particular interest and it’s particularly important.

Conrad Industries has been awarded a $5.5 million contract for the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The contract award calls for the design and construction of a 255-foot crane barge with a fully equipped machine and fabrication shop. When delivered, the vessel's primary mission shall be the support of maintenance dredging and repair of navigation structures and facilities for the Nashville District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Conrad Industries, Inc. announced the signing of contracts for the construction of ten vessels totaling $32.3 million and delivery of three vessels in recent months. Offshore Marine Contractors has executed contracts for three 175 foot class 110'x64.5'x9' liftboats, similar to previous liftboats built by Conrad. W.C. Fore Trucking, McCleary Offshore Construction and Inland Barge Rentals have executed contracts for the construction of deck barges that range in size from 120'x30'x7' to 210'x72'x14'. Settoon Towing signed a contract for two 6,500 bbl. inland double skin barges that will be certified for crude oil service. In addition Foss Maritime Company signed a contract for two 26,000 bbl. double skin barges that will be equipped as bunkering barges for their west coast operations.
