Fast, Quick Action Needed to Meet Paris Climate Goals: CAN

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has agreed on an initial strategy to decarbonise international shipping and reduce emissions from ships by at least 50% by 2050. While this agreement falls short of the 70 to 100% reductions by 2050 that the Pacific Islands, the EU and others were calling for ahead of the meeting, it keeps a window open to meet the Paris climate goals and is undeniably a game changer for the shipping sector. This plan serves as a welcome first step to phase out emissions from the sector, but the IMO must now build on the agreed minimum target of 50% reductions in subsequent reviews of the strategy to comply with its fair share of emissions under the Paris Agreement.

First Signs of Healing in the Antarctic Ozone Hole

An international team of researchers led by Susan Solomon at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has identified the “first fingerprints of healing” of the Antarctic ozone layer, published this week (30 June 2016) in the journal Science. The team found that the September ozone hole has shrunk by more than 4 million square kilometers — about half the area of the contiguous United States — since 2000, when ozone depletion was at its peak. The team also showed for the first time that this recovery has slowed somewhat at times, due to the effects of volcanic eruptions from year to year. Overall, however, the ozone hole appears to be on a healing path.

R-22 Phase-out Presents Dangers and Expense -WSS

The shipping industry is facing price, supply and safety risks in the run-up to the global ban on R-22 (chlorodifluoromethane or HCFC) refrigerant, warns Wilhelmsen Ships Service, a global provider of services and products. The colorless gas, which has high ozone depletion and global warming potential, is still said to be in use on between 6,000 and 8,000 vessels worldwide. R-22 was outlawed throughout the EU in a process that ran from 2010 to January 1, 2015. It is currently being phased out in the U.S., where no new or imported R-22 will be permitted from January 1, 2020.

COA Making Sure Reefer Refrigerant the Real Thing

The Container Owners Association (COA) has had to develop a new global online database of refrigeration machinery repair companies, following 5 separate explosions that caused 3 deaths in 2011. Investigations into the incidents, which resulted in three deaths, concluded that the refrigeration machines had contained a gas other than the refrigerant R134a for which they were designed to operate on, which had created explosive gases inside the system. After testing samples from over 10…

Danfoss Sees Opportunities After COP15

Although the delegates to the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) Dec. 7 - 18 in Copenhagen failed to agree on a legally binding replacement of the Kyoto Protocol, many opportunities already exist to save energy and reduce carbon emissions through improved energy efficiency in homes, schools, offices and other commercial buildings. "While it's true that the removal of political and economic barriers would provide a significant boost to global energy efficiency, it's important to remember that many of today's technologies produce the desired effect -- improving energy efficiency, saving money and reducing carbon emissions in the process," said Robert Wilkins, president of Danfoss North America.

Wilhelmsen and R-22 Phase Out

Wilhelmsen Ships Service is taking up the initiative to highlight the mandatory requirement for the phase-out of virgin HCFC (hydro chlorofluorocarbon) refrigerants, the most commonly used being R-22.The EU phase-out means that it will be prohibited to top up refrigeration systems on board EU-flagged vessels using virgin HCFCs after 1st January 2010. On EU-flagged vessels it will still be legal to use reclaimed R-22 from an approved company within the EU to top up and service systems until 2015. However, the availability of reclaimed R-22 is very limited, so prices are rising and are expected to remain high for the foreseeable future. Although this legislation (EC2037) only applies to EU-flagged vessels, other vessels will also be affected if they call at EU ports and request virgin R-22.
