China first domestically developed aircraft carrier looks set to begin sea trials after pictures appeared on the Chinese internet on Monday of it leaving its dock in the northeastern port of Dalian. The still-unnamed carrier was launched this time last year but since then has been undergoing fitting of weapons and other systems and has not yet entered service. China launched its first domestically built aircraft carrier on Wednesday amid rising tension over North Korea and worries about Beijing's assertiveness in the South China Sea. State media has quoted military experts as saying the carrier, China's second and built in the northeastern port of Dalian, is not expected to enter service until 2020, once it has been kitted out and armed. The port of Antwerp is to collaborate with Dalian Maritime University (DMU) in northern China for the next three academic years. DMU is a prestigious Chinese maritime university whose alumni include many prominent figures in the shipping industry. In order to permit students to gain experience in the port of Antwerp, the second-largest port of Europe, since 2014 Antwerp Port Authority has presented awards to students who write a thesis about the port or a logistics-related subject. Iran is slowly winding down stocks of oil stored on tankers close to its shores and the process is likely to take longer than Tehran had wanted, despite the lifting of international sanctions this month. The pace of sales taken from floating storage highlights the difficulties Iran is facing amid a global oil glut and other challenges such as the certification of its fleet. Iran parked over 40 million barrels of crude and condensate, a very light grade of crude, on 20 to 25 ships after Western sanctions were imposed over its nuclear program. The sanctions stopped most countries from buying Iranian oil in recent years. Most of the ships storing oil are run by Iranian tanker operator NITC.

After months of speculation, China confirmed on Thursday it is building a second aircraft carrier to go with an existing one bought second-hand, as neighbours worry about Beijing's new assertiveness to claims in the South China Sea. Defence Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said the carrier had been designed in China and was being built in the port of Dalian. A 19000 tons cargo vessel is making the first journey by a Chinese merchant ship to Europe via the Northern Sea Route, reports the Barents Observer. The cargo vessel “Hong Xing” owned by the Chinese shipping company COSCO left the northeastern port of Dalian on Thursday and is expected to take 33 days to reach Europe via the Bering Strait and Russia's northern coastline. The vessel is headed for Rotterdam and is due to arrive on September 11, 2013. For China, the world’s No 2 economy after the United States, the route would save time and money. According to a report on www.chinadaily.com.cn, China's first aircraft carrier finished its sea trials this weekend, and returned to port in Dalian. The carrier nicknamed for now "Varyag" when at the Black Sea Shipyard in Ukraine, broke through a thick fog and appeared about 3 km east of the docks of the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co Ltd, which refitted the ship, according to the Beijing-based Mirror Evening News. At least seven tugboats guided the vessel to the dock, the report said.

On January 1, M.V. Cosco Europe, the second 10,000-TEU-Class container ship of Cosco, was delivered at Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard. The ship left the shipyard for the port of Dalian on the same day. The ship will be added to the service between the Far East and Europe.

As divers pulled more bodies from the sunken wreckage of a car and passenger ferry last week, officials vowed to recover all of the 280 victims of China's worst ferry disaster in recent years, which occurred on Nov. 24. The death toll threatens to surpass that of China's worst shipping disaster in recent years, in which 133 people died when a ferry collided with a freighter on the Yangtze River and sank in February 1994. Only 22 of the 302 people aboard the ferry are known to have survived the disaster, in which the 9,000-ton Dashun caught fire, then broke up and sank in rough seas and gale-force winds. The most recent report on the recovery effort brought the number of bodies found to 123.
