While the term ‘pioneer’ is oftentimes loosely bandied about, there is no more accurate term to describe Jochen Deerberg, an environmental pioneer of the maritime industry, founder of Oldenburg, Germany-based Deerberg-Systems, who was recently feted by cruise industry luminaries at his farewell dinner late last year. “To start in 1979 one could see that environmental-waste management problems on shore and especially in the maritime industry would be of great importance in the future,” said Deerberg. “Of course, I was 10 years too early with my idea.

MHI to Build Two Cruise Ships for Carnival

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) began construction today at its Nagasaki Shipyard and Machinery Works on the first of two new generation cruise ships for AIDA Cruises, the German cruise company part of Costa Group, Europe's largest cruise company member of Carnival Corporation & plc. MHI said the two new ships, which will incorporate an array of the world's leading-edge environmental technologies, are scheduled for delivery in the spring of March 2015 and 2016 respectively.

Carnival Sets Up Asia Unit, Appoints Head

Carnival Corporation appoints Costa Cruises Chairman Pier Luigi Foschi to oversee the company's growth strategies within the Asian region. In his role as chairman and chief executive officer of the new Carnival Asia unit, Foschi will be responsible for establishing Carnival Corporation & plc's new corporate offices in Singapore and providing guidance and assistance to the organization's various operating units in pursuing their Asian cruise strategies. Currently, Carnival Corporation & plc's Asia operations include two Costa Cruises ships based in China and Singapore and Princess Cruises' Sun Princess, which will launch a series of voyages from Japan next spring.

Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal will be the home port for Costa Victoria, which will provide 33 itineraries a year, making Costa Cruises the biggest international operator at the terminal. With the explicit support and encouragement from the Chinese government Costa Cruises has been running cruises from Shanghai since 2006. Costa Fascinosa, the new 114,500 gt flagship of Costa Cruises, has been delivered to the cruise line, by shipbuilder Fincantieri in Venice, Italy. Officially handed over at the Venice Passenger Terminal, Costa Fascinosa — with sister ship Costa Favolosa — is the largest Italian-flagged cruise ship afloat. Costa Concordia Wreck – Removal Contract Awarded

Costa Crociere and the Costa Concordia Emergency Commissioner's Office announced that the tender for the removal of the ship from Giglio Island has been awarded to Titan Salvage in partnership with the Italian firm Micoperi. The work will begin in early May subject to final approval from the Italian authorities and is expected to take about 12 months. Titan Salvage is an American-owned specialist marine salvage and wreck removal company, part of the Crowley Group, and is a world leader in its field. Micoperi is a well-known Italian marine contractor with a long history as a specialist in underwater construction and engineering. "We are very pleased to announce another important step toward salvaging the wreck from Giglio Island," said Costa Crociere S.p.A. Chairman & CEO Pier Luigi Foschi.

Costa Crash Cause: Human Error Cited

While it could be months if not years before the full details of the crash and capsizing of the Costa Concordia are fully revealed and understood, early indications point to human error, specifically an “unapproved, unauthorized maneuver” to divert from its programmed course by the captain, according to a report in the New York Times, citing Pier Luigi Foschi's, the chairman and chief executive of Costa Cruises, comments at a press conference on Monday, January 16, 2012, in Genoa. To date, at least six were killed in the mishap and more than a dozen remain missing. Costa Orders 132,500-gt Ship from Fincantieri

Costa Crociere S.p.A., placed a new order with Fincantieri S.p.A. for the construction of a new cruise ship. The new ship ordered today, with a gross tonnage of 132,500, 3,700 lower berths, 4,928 total Guests and 1,854 cabins, will be the largest Italian cruise ship and the 10th ship ordered from Fincantieri by Costa Cruises in the past 10 years. The new flagship in the Costa fleet and the Italian passenger fleet will be built at the Fincantieri shipyards in Marghera (Venice), for a total ship owner’s all-in cost of approximately €150,000 per lower berth. Delivery is planned for October 2014. The new ship will be an innovative evolution of the "Concordia-class” project, developed by integrating and improving the main features of the latest successful Costa ships entered into service.

MIP Estimates Costa Crociere S.p.A.'s Economic Impact

In 2010, Costa Crociere S.p.A. generated an impact of over $3.2 billion on the Italian economy. This is one of the findings of a study carried out by MIP, the Milan Polytechnic Business School. Costa Crociere S.p.A. is an Italian company headquartered in Genoa, which comprises 3 brands (the Costa Cruises brand, Aida Cruises for the German market, and Iberocruceros, which operates mainly for the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking markets). It is one of Italy’s top 10 most profitable companies and ranks 49th in terms of turnover in Mediobanca’s 2010 survey of over 3,700 Italian enterprises that recorded revenue of at least $73 million the previous fiscal year.

Pier Luigi Foschi, Chairman and CEO Costa Crociere, has been listed in the "Club 33" the list of the 33 most important and influencial people in global travel industry published by Travel Weekly magazine. Mr. Foschi’s brief profile reported by the magazine states: "He's not well know in the US but he's a global powerhouse the man behind Carnival Corp’s international expansion plans. He heads the first major cruise line venture in mainland China and obtained the first license to base an international cruise ship in Beijing.

Costa Fortuna Leaves For Sea Trials

Costa Costa Fortuna has taken to the open sea for the first time. Costa Crociere’s new flagship which, with her 105,000 gross tonnage, is the largest cruise ship in the history of Italian seafaring, today left Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyards, where her fitting out is nearing completion, bound for the builder’s Palermo yard. This crossing will be used to carry out sea trials. On the way from Genoa to Palermo Costa Fortuna will be subjected to various preliminary operational tests on her systems, equipment and engines.

Carnival Corp. to Consolidate German Cruise Ops

Carnival Corporation will consolidate its German cruise operations, transferring the 1,590-passenger cruise ship A'ROSA Blu to its AIDA brand in summer 2004. Separately, the company announced that it has entered into a letter of intent to sell the A'ROSA brand name and the A'ROSA riverboats. With the transfer of the A'ROSA Blu, to be renamed AIDA Blu, Carnival Corp. & plc will have two distinct brands operating five vessels catering exclusively to German-speaking clientele. The four AIDA ships will operate under the informal "club resort" cruise concept aimed at younger, more active passengers while the vessel of Costa Kreuzfahrten, a division of Costa Cruises, offers a more traditional cruise experience.

Costa Victoria in for a Facelift at Lloyd Werft

Radical changes are imminent for Costa Victoria, one of the nine members currently comprising the Costa Crociere fleet. On January 6, next year, at the end of her New Year's Eve cruise, the ship will leave the port of Savona bound for Bremerhaven in Germany, where it will arrive after 5 days at sea and undergo work at the Lloyd Werft shipyard. During Costa Victoria's stay in the yard, which will last approximately 30 days, it will be dry-docked for routine maintenance work, which is performed regularly every two years on all the company's vessels. Carnival Orders 112,000-Ton Ship for Costa Cruises

Genoa-based Costa Cruises, a unit of Carnival Corporation & plc announced that it has signed a letter of intent with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri Cantieri Navali S.p.A. to construct a 112,000-gross-ton cruise ship to be delivered in summer 2006. To be built at Fincantieri's Sestri Ponente shipyard, the new vessel will have an all-in cost of approximately 450 million euros. The as-yet-unnamed ship, which will encompass 1,502 staterooms with a total guest capacity of 3,800, will be the largest passenger ship in the history of Italian seafaring. Italy: Grimaldi Continues Fast Track Expansion

Manuel Grimaldi confided to some close friends last December that not only had he decided to set up a new line from Italy to Spain but also to purchase Superfast 1 now called Eurostar Roma for about $49.3 million. The specification of the vessel will mean a greater presence in Mediterranean RoRo and in fact there are now three of this type of vessel under the name of Grimaldi Ferry Prestige. The new purchase Eurostar Roma (pictured opposite page) was presented by the Naples shipping group in Rome on January 23, 2004. The vessel is 24,000 tons, 570.8 ft. (174 m) long, with a beam of 78.7 ft. (24 m) and a cruising speed of 27 knots. Eurostar Rome can carry 1,400 passengers with 100 cars as well as 110 trailers.

Costa Announces Record Results

The ordinary general meeting of shareholders of Costa Crociere S.p.A, held March 31, 2004, adopted the financial statement for the period December 1, 2002/November 30, 2003. 2003 was a record year for Costa Crociere: the company topped the half-million mark for the number of passengers carried in a 12-month period (a historic achievement and a first for a European cruise operator) with 557,300 guests, compared to 462,036 the year before (+21%), amounting to 4,300,000 passenger days (up 19% on 2002). Sales rose by 7.2%, at euro 785.6 million. Operating income was also substantial, at euro 105 million, although down on the figure recorded in 2002 on account of the strong pressure on prices that occurred throughout the year.
