Thailand Races to Find Missing Marines from Sunken Warship

Thailand's military mobilised helicopters, warships and unmanned drones off its central coast on Tuesday as rescue teams raced against time to find survivors after a navy corvette sank at the weekend in choppy waters.One marine was rescued alive on Tuesday from the waters of the Gulf of Thailand, the navy said, among dozens who were forced to abandon the HTMS Sukhothai late on Sunday after it was knocked over by four-metre (13 ft) waves and strong winds. Five were found dead.There were 24 marines still unaccounted for by Tuesday evening.

British Forces Assist Stricken Cruise Liner

Military assets deployed in support of Falkland Island government in cruise ship rescue. In support of the Falkland Island Government, British forces based in the Falkland Islands yesterday responded to a distress call by the 10,000 tonne cruise ship ‘Le Boreal’. The ship reported suffering a major engine room fire, which caused the loss of all power and left the ship drifting. A north-westerly gale placed the ship in real danger of grounding on Cape Dolphin, East Falkland. The master ordered the ship, with 347 passengers and crew, to be abandoned early yesterday morning. Working closely with the Falkland Islands Government, British Forces enacted a major search and rescue plan.

Fishing Crew Rescued After Engine Fire

A crew of 36 fishermen was rescued Sunday from a Papua New Guinean ship after an engine fire left the fishing vessel disabled roughly 200 miles off Tokelau, a territory of New Zealand in the South Pacific. The rescue was coordinated by the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ), with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard as well as another nearby fishing vessel. Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator, Mike Roberts, said the one-year-old Papua New Guinea registered Glory Pacific No.8 activated its emergency beacon  after an engine room fire disabled the ship 210 miles NNE of Tokelau, just inside the New Zealand search and rescue region. The U.S. Coast Guard Honolulu offered to send a C130 Hercules aircraft to investigate, and because the location was so far North, the U.S.

Metal Shark Delivers First Response Boat to Coast Guard

Metal Shark Boats this week delivered the first new Response Boat-Small (RB-S) II to the U.S. Coast Guard's Special Missions Training Center at Camp LeJune, North Carolina. Louisiana Manufacturer will Replace Coast Guard's Small Response Boat Fleet. Metal Shark Boats has been awarded a contract to replace the U.S. Coast Guard's fleet of Response Boat - Small (RB-S) vessels. Up to 470 boats will be delivered across the Coast Guard fleet, with an additional 20 boats will be available to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, with another ten slated for purchase by the U.S. Navy. The $192 million contract is one of the largest boat buys of its kind for the Coast Guard, and provides a significant economic boost to the state of Louisiana.

Metalcraft Towboat for U.S. Navy with UltraJet Waterjets

MetalCraft Marine has delivered its first 26-ft US Navy Tow Boat to Cheatham Annex. Metalcraft Marine was recently awarded a contract by the United States Navy for the construction of eight of their 26-ft tow boats. The tow boats will support the US Navy’s spill recovery, support and salvage operations worldwide. Fully loaded the aluminium tow boat can reach speeds of 34 knots with its Single Iveco NEF 450 hp engine rated at 420 hp (309 kW) driving a single UltraJet 305HT High Thrust Waterjet viz a ZF 280 gearbox. UltraJet waterjets were chosen for their high bollard pull for vessel recovery.

CG Foundation Fund Following C130 Tragedy

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of all U.S. Coast Guard members and their families, announced that it has re-activated its emergency Family Disaster Relief Fund in response to the Oct. 29 C-130 crash off the California coast. The Coast Guard Foundation is asking for financial support to assist the families of the lost crew of CG-1705. The Family Disaster Relief Fund was established in September 2008 in the wake of the helicopter crash in Hawaii that resulted in the loss of 4 Coast Guard members. The Coast Guard has identified the missing personnel as Lt. Cmdr. Che J. Barnes of Capay, California, aircraft commander, age 35; Petty Officer 2nd Class Monica L. House Transportation Committee Approves CG Authorization Act

A $7.1 billion authorization for the U.S. Coast Guard’s fiscal year 2004 activities was unanimously approved by the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure on June 25. The measure approved was a manager's amendment of the bill as introduced. It authorizes the agency to expend $7.1 billion during FY 2004. Monies are specifically authorized for review and approval of vessel and facility security plans. Non-tank vessels over 400 gross tons will be required to have oil spill response plans, similar to those required of tank vessels. The liability provisions of OPA 90 are conformed to those found in the Superfund legislation. The measure now goes to the full House for consideration.
