Unlockable Feature for Simrad Halo Pulse Compression Radar

Simrad Yachting announced today a new, unlockable add-on feature for Halo Pulse Compression Radar Systems – VelocityTrack. Increasing boater awareness, VelocityTrack provides instant visual feedback on the motion of radar targets in relation to the boat, reducing the risk of a collision. VelocityTrack enables Halo radar to determine whether a target is closing, diverging, or stationary relative to your boat by using the Doppler Effect. VelocityTrack offers an immediate view of all relative target motion, with an option to de-emphasize diverging or retreating targets, making it easier to pick out relevant targets to track and ignore targets that are not a collision risk.

Israel Bolsters Navy to Protect Offshore Oil & Gas

Offshore energy platforms a potential target; Israel accepting bids on 24 new exploration blocks. Israel is boosting spending on its navy to better protect offshore oil and gas deposits and secure a large maritime zone that abuts that of its neighbour and enemy, Lebanon. The navy asked in 2013 for an increase in its budget of $700 million to build up its systems and $100 million annually to maintain them, though the defence ministry declines to say how much it has since received. The increase was tied to the need to defend the oil and gas development, and the current spending comes as Israel begins accepting bids from companies that want to explore 24 offshore blocks in the eastern Mediterranean that adjoin the vast Leviathan deposit.

‘A Step Forward in Submarine Radar Technology’

Photo: Kelvin Hughes

Kelvin Hughes, a U.K. baesd designer and supplier of navigation and security surveillance systems, announced that it can now bring all the benefits of its SharpEye radar technology to submarines. Traditionally, submarines only use radar for navigation in and out of port because a high power RF transmission can compromise its ability to remain undetected. However, with its low power output – up to 300W as opposed to the 25kW of legacy submarine radar systems – SharpEye can reduce the probability of detection by ESM systems.
