Monjasa remains active in the market for secondhand tonnage following the acquisitions of three tankers earlier this year. Oil and shipping group Monjasa said it has acquired the 9,600-dwt oil and chemical tanker Monjasa Server from Golden-Agri Stena. The 117.6-meter vessel is set for cargo and bunkering operations in the Arabian Gulf by November 2020.Formerly known as the GS Adventure, the 2009-built Monjasa Server joins Monjasa’s marine fuel operations across the Middle East, which currently consist of four tankers ranging between 4,000 and 10,000-dwt.Equipped with deepwell pumps and five tank segregations allowing multiple fuel grades onboard, Monjasa Server increases operational flexibility.

Greek operator Maran Tankers Management (MTM), part of the Angelicoussis Group, has taken delivery of the 157,000 dwt oil tanker Maran Orpheus, built by Daehan Shipbuilding Co. in South Korea. The Suezmax delivery follows the 157,946 dwt Maran Phoebe handed over from Daehan in June. Both ships are Greek-flagged and classed by DNV GL.Daehan is also building the ABS-classed, 157,000 dwt Maran Aspasia and Maran Solon scheduled for delivery to MTM in October and December respectively.

Tanker ship owner Xihe Group of Companies appointed V.Group as the technical manager for 16 of its modern tankers.“This strategic partnership kickstarts Xihe’s engage-ment of independent, world-class professional companies to provide technical and commercial management for our vessels," said Kenny Lim, Interim CEO of Xihe. Bermuda-based ship-owning and ship chartering firm Ship Finance International Limited (SFL) has agreed to purchase three very large crude carriers (VLCCs) from Norwegian investment company Hunter Group. The 300,000 dwt oil tankers are currently being constructed by South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME). Hunter Group placed the order for the VLCCs last year. SFI will pay almost $60 million for each tanker and a total of $180 million for all three. The vessels are scheduled to be delivered within the next two months.The tankers will be fitted with exhaust gas cleaning systems to reduce the emissions of sulfur oxides (SOx) and other pollutants, and to meet IMO regulations.

South Korea shipbuilding major Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced that it has successfully built its first LNG-fuelled vessels with its own technology, proving itself to the eco-friendly shipping industry for its construction competencies and technological prowess.SHI announced on April 29, 2019 that the two LNG-fuelled 113,000 dwt oil tankers delivered to an Asian shipowner early this year just completed the first bunkering at the port of Rotterdam in Netherlands and now begin its operation as ecofriendly vessels. A Shipping Corporation of India very large crude carrier (VLCC) has suffered an explosion in one of its cargo tanks while transiting off the coast of Oman, the shipowner confirmed Tuesday.Three crew members of the 316,409 DWT oil tanker Desh Vaibhav are reported missing, and one person with burn injuries has been evacuated by helicopter, according to a press release issued by the shipowner.The 2005-built Desh Vaibhav was sailing toward Fujairah, UAE when the blast occurred around 9:35 a.m. IST, the shipowner said. The resulting fire has reportedly subsided.A firefighting vessel was said to be on its way to the scene, and the shipowner said it was also seeking assistance from the Oman Royal Navy and nearby ships.

Cosco  Shipping Energy Transportation (CSET) has placed an order for seven more ships at compatriot Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited (GSI), owned by CSSC Offshore & Marine Engineering Company Limited. The order will include two 64,900 dwt crude oil tankers, two 109,900 dwt LR2 vessels and three 114,000 dwt crude tankers, totaling in an investment worth approximately USD 323 million (RMB 2.14 billion.). Expected delivery dates for the two 64,900 dwt panamax crude tankers are on or before 29 February 2020 and 31 May 2020, respectively. The two 109,900 dwt LR2/Aframax clean products/crude oil carriers of 109,900 dead have expected delivery dates of on or before 31 October 2020 and 31 January 2021, respectively.

Hong Kong unit of China Shipping Development, the oil and dry bulk shipping arm of state conglomerate China Shipping Group, has booked four very large crude carriers (VLCCs) at a compatriot yard. The worth a total of $375.92m was placed with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC). The four new 308,000 dwt oil tankers, each costing around $94m, are scheduled to be delivered between May 2017 to September 2018. The construction of the VLCCs will be funded by bank funding and internal financial resources. The delivery of the new vessels will enable the company to optimize its overall route arrangements and improve its operating efficiency and profitability, said the company.

The Liberian-flag fleet posted record growth figures in 2010 and has now doubled in size in the ten years since the management of the Liberian Registry was assumed by the US-based Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR). The Liberian-flag fleet was boosted by 586 new registrations last year. Of these, 149 were newbuildings. Net growth was 338 vessels, aggregating 13.6m gt. The average age of the 586 new registrations was 5.46 years, compared to the 17.32 average age of those vessels removed from the registry. The average age of the Liberian-flag fleet is now just 12 years. Scott Bergeron, Chief Operating officer of LISCR, says, “The phenomenal growth under LISCR management is testament to the quality of service and responsiveness provided by the Liberian Registry.

Hamworthy has won a contract to supply pump room systems for 11 vessels to be delivered to the China Shipping Group (CSG). The first three systems are destined for installation on three CSG 112,000 dwt aframax newbuildings, to be constructed at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC). The remaining eight systems are to be supplied to product carriers being built at Guangzhou Shipyard International, (GSI). All 11 systems include three cargo pumps and two ballast pumps, which have been cast at Hamworthy’s manufacturing plant in Singapore in superior Ni-Al-Bronze material.

Orkim Harmony located with crew, cargo safe; Malaysian navy negotiating with pirates onboard. A Malaysian naval vessel has made contact with the pirates onboard hijacked tanker Orkim Harmony and is trying to persuade them to surrender, a maritime official said on Thursday. The tanker as of noon (0400 GMT) was in Vietnamese waters headed south with the Malaysian navy vessel KD Terengganu and a maritime ship in pursuit. Both the crew and the cargo onboard the tanker are safe, and the navy is negotiating with the robbers through the captain of the Orkim Harmony, said Vice Admiral Ahmad Puzi, deputy director general of the operations unit of the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), in a press briefing.

The hijacked oil tanker Orkim Harmony has been released by pirates, who fled in the ship's rescue boat, Malaysian navy and maritime officials said on Friday. The Orkim Harmony, hijacked on June 11 off the Malaysian coast by pirates reportedly armed with pistols and machetes, was now being escorted by the navy to Malaysia's Kuantan Port. Officials said only one member of the 22 crew was injured, suffering a gunshot wound to the thigh. Three Malaysian navy ships and two aircraft were hunting the fleeing pirates. The hijacking is the second seizure of a tanker by pirates in Southeast Asia this month, raising further concerns over piracy in the region.

Emirates classification society Tasneef has classed its first commercial vessel. The 96,214 dwt oil tanker Energena is jointly-classed with Italian classification society Rina. Yesterday His Highness Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, attended a ceremony to mark the flag raising and the granting of classification by Tasneef-Rina. The vessel is owned by Dubai-based Energena Shipping and managed by Gulf Stolt Ship Management JLT, (GSSM).
