Crowley Awards Scholarship to Williams-Mystic Student

February 6, 2008

Mariah Pepper, from Bryn Mawr, Penn., a student in the maritime studies program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport, has been named as a recipient of a Thomas B. Crowley, Sr. Memorial Scholarship, which is presented annually at the institution by Crowley Maritime Corporation.

Pepper was selected based on academic success, financial need, and her interest in maritime trades and studies. In addition to participating in the Williams-Mystic program, Pepper is a junior majoring in Anthropology at Bryn Mawr College. Additionally, Pepper is involved in a pilot social justice program at the college that facilitates guidance for freshmen. She is also a dancer and an a cappella vocalist. She came to the Williams-Mystic program to gain real-world and physical experience by sailing offshore while examining policy issues closely. Williams-Mystic is the only interdisciplinary program of its kind. Undergraduates of all majors share one semester at Mystic Seaport to focus on the past, present and future of the earth's oceans. Williams-Mystic combines the academic excellence of Williams College and the unparalleled learning environment of Mystic Seaport - The Museum of America and the Sea. Students participate in four rigorous courses in marine science, maritime history, literature of the sea, and marine policy. They also participate in a museum skills class, a Pacific Coast field seminar, a Gulf Coast/Louisiana field seminar, and a deep-water offshore voyage to the Gulf of Maine or Caribbean aboard a traditionally-rigged tall ship.
