Lockdowns to slow the coronavirus pandemic are pummelling gas demand in the world's biggest buyers of liquefied natural gas (LNG), pushing Asia's spot prices to record lows and forcing some suppliers to start cutting output. Economies worldwide have ground to a halt as virus containment measures have taken their toll, slashing gas demand for power generation, heating, cooking, vehicles and chemical manufacture. The world's biggest LNG markets - Japan, China, South Korea, and India - are all seeing a drop in demand. Asia's spot LNG prices dropped to $1.85 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) last week, the lowest ever, as cargoes have flooded the market. "At prices in the $2/mmBtu range ... some producers are getting close to not recovering cash costs of their operations.

Shuttle tanker operator KNOT has secured a contract extension for its Torill Knutsen tanker with Italy's Eni.KNOT said Tuesday that Eni had exercised two of its one-year options to extend the time charter of the Torill Knutsen until November 2022. Data by VesselsValue shows Eni has been using the shuttle tanker to offload crude from the Barents Sea area offshore Norway, where the company operates the Goliat FPSO.In connection with the early exercise by Eni of its options, KNOT has granted Eni a further option to extend the time charter.

Irish-domiciled multinational oilfield services company Weatherford said it has made a major enhancement to its ForeSite production optimization platform, which combines physics-based models with advanced data analytics to improve performance across wells, reservoirs, and surface facilities on a single, secure platform.Weatherford, which first introduced the ForeSite platform in May 2017, said the new release expands predictive failure analytics to electric submersible pumping systems (ESPs) and adds complete optimization capabilities for plunger-lifted wells.The platform expands capabilities in reciprocating rod lift by adding predictive failure analytics for ESP systems.

Exxon Mobil Corp and its partners now expect the large Stabroek oil block offshore Guyana to contain about 25 percent more recoverable resources than estimated, they said on Monday.Exxon and U.S.-based partner Hess Corp said more than 4 billion barrels of oil equivalent could be recovered from the Stabroek block, which is part of one of the biggest oil discoveries in the world in the last decade.The previous estimate was 3.2 billion barrels of oil equivalent, Exxon, the world's largest publicly traded oil producer, said.Besides Exxon and Hess, China's CNOOC is also part of the consortium that is interested in Guyana's Atlantic coast resources.Exxon said production from Stabroek could reach over 750…

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency has made a new appointment to the role of Secretary of State’s Representative (SOSRep) Maritime Salvage & Intervention, which oversees the response to accidents at sea. Les Chapman has been appointed to the role and will join the Agency on Monday 21 August. He will work alongside the existing SOSRep Hugh Shaw OBE for several months, to allow a substantial transition period in this important role, and will not assume the role and responsibilities of the SOSRep until an agreed time later on in the year. The SOSRep is responsible for reducing the risk to safety and the environment arising from accidents at sea.

An expanding maritime consultancy headquartered in Seattle has recorded its busiest start to a year so far with rising demand for its services worldwide. The Maritime Group (International) (TMG) is lining up contracts across multiple sectors for 2017 after a surge of interest in its services. Targeted projects cover ferry and cruise operations, port management, marine surveys, feasibility studies and maritime and border security. Concerns about UK coastal security are to be raised with Government Ministers following a meeting of an influential Parliamentary maritime group. The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Maritime and Ports is to seek assurances from Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill MP about measures to bolster Great Britain’s inshore borders in the fight against such threats as people traffickers, organised crime, illegal fishing, terrorists and drugs smugglers. It is also to copy the letter to Shipping Minister John Hayes MP. A centralised command and control structure, multi-agency operations and co-ordinated intelligence gathering were among the issues raised at the meeting at Westminster.

Shipping rates in New Zealand waters have become "unsustainably low" in the wake of supply chain agreements such as between Kotahi and Port of Tauranga,  NBR reports as South Port New Zealand chairman Rex Chapman saying. The company's strategy is to maintain good working relationships with other ports, to take advantage of the "inevitable changes in the port sector. Chapman said that just as Tauranga has now reached into the South Island through Timaru, it is expected that other ports will be seeking to enter into working relationships with one another in order to capture regional cargo outside of their immediate catchment area. Meanwhile, diversifying business streams was paying dividends while plans for an inland port facility in Invercargill were also advancing, Rex Chapman said.

The New Zealand Shipping Federation (NZSF) said it has appointed Annabel Young as its new executive director. It said Ms Young was a National Party list MP from 1997 to 2002 and since then she has been the chief executive at Federated Farmers, as well as the Pharmacy Guild. The new executive director wants to get the issue of coastal shipping back on politicians' radar screen. "Everyone talks about road and rail but one look at a map of New Zealand tells you coastal shipping is a really important part of the transport network," she said. The federation started in 1906 and its current members are Pacifica Shipping, Silver Fern Shipping, Strait Shipping, the Interislander, NIWA and cement companies.

Pacifica Shipping, New Zealand's coastal shipping company, is launching a new container vessel from March replacing a smaller vessel whose charter has ended, reports The Stuff. The Spirit of Canterbury would provide greater capacity for customers including reefer cargo and replace the Spirit of Independence whose charter ended in December, says Steven Chapman, CEO of Pacifica. The Spirit of Canterbury will have 1100 container capacity, 57 per cent more than the vessel it replaces. It would offer a dedicated weekly service from Auckland to Lyttelton to Nelson to Tauranga and back to Auckland. The company was focused on having enough additional capacity, specifically from Nelson as part of the new export season.

Golar LNG Limited today announced that Doug Arnell has decided to step down as CEO of Golar on February 1, 2015. Mr. Arnell's decision is driven by a personal wish to return with his family to his home country of Canada. Mr. Arnell will be succeeded by Gary Smith, who is well known to Golar and who brings with him a track record of leadership and operational management success in the mid-stream oil and gas, shipping and LNG businesses. Mr. Smith's career spans 35 years, including 25 years with Shell and Caltex Australia (a Chevron affiliate) in roles including General Manager LNG Shipping for Shell (STASCO) and General Manager Refining, Supply and Distribution for Caltex Australia.

Stephen D. Pryor, president, ExxonMobil Chemical Company and vice president of Exxon Mobil Corporation, has elected to retire on January 1, 2015, after more than 44 years of service. It is anticipated that the board of directors of Exxon Mobil Corporation will appoint Neil A. Chapman as president of ExxonMobil Chemical Company and elect him a vice president of the corporation, effective Jan. 1, 2015. Chapman is currently senior vice president, Polymers, ExxonMobil Chemical Company. Pryor, 64, joined Mobil Corporation in 1971 and has held a number of financial and managerial positions in the United States, Cyprus, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. In 1993, he was appointed vice president, Mobil Chemical Company and general manager, Plastics Division.

Golar LNG Limited announced that with effect from September 19, 2014, Sir Frank Joseph Chapman has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Company and will act as the Company's Chairman. Sir Frank Chapman has worked 40 years in the oil and gas industry culminating in a twelve-year period as Chief Executive of BG Group plc. Under Sir Frank's leadership, BG Group grew from the modest UK-based Exploration and Production interests of the old British Gas into an international integrated oil and gas major. Operating profits grew from some $50 million in 1996 to more than $8 billion in 2012. Sir Frank is currently a non-executive director of Rolls-Royce plc and chairman of their safety and ethics committee.

South Port NZ Ltd., located at Bluff in New Zealand’s South Island, has just completed the order for a new LHM 550 mobile harbor crane. The crane will be used for container handling for MSC, the port’s containerized cargo customer. The new machine is the third LHM delivered to New Zealand’s southernmost port. “South Port is the regional port operator in Southern New Zealand, and it is important to our clients that we operate with a two-crane model, giving faster turnaround time to the container vessels and allow for projected growth in this area of the business,” said Chairman Rex Chapman.

American Worldwide Agencies (AWA) is adding to its global network of freight forwarders and agents with a new office in Houston, the company announced today. The Houston office is part of AWA's global expansion plans and will handle the company's growing business in the region for project freight, oil and gas, breakbulk and containerized cargo moves. "Houston is the number one U.S. port in foreign tonnage and is the largest Gulf Coast container port," says Andrew Scott, AWA's CEO. "It also is in major growth mode, with both imports and exports on the rise. Michael E. Ford, 75, of Waretown, NJ, passed away on January 4, 2014. Born in Washington, DC and raised in Chevy Chase, Md., he graduated from the #United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY, in 1960 with a degree in Marine Engineering, and earned a master’s degree in International Business from Bernard M. Baruch College, New York, in 1979. He served his country as an officer in the United States Naval Reserve. Following his graduation from Kings Point, he sailed for the Alcoa Steamship Company, raising his Coast Guard license to Chief Engineer, unlimited.
