Maersk VC co-leads Funding Round in Egyptian Freight Logistics Start Up

Egyptian startup Trella, a digital platform connecting truckers with freight loads, has raised $42 million in equity and debt, including from the venture capital arm of shipping giant Maersk, its chief executive said.Founded three years ago in Cairo, Trella operates in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. It is one of several technology firms around the world seeking to upend traditional truck brokerages.Through Trella's online platform, shippers and truckers can directly book freight loads for transport.

Thomas Crowley Award to Michel & Weist

Suz Michel, director of people development and learning for Crowley in Seattle, and Bob Weist, vice president of sales and marketing for the logistics group were awarded 2008 Thomas Crowley trophies, the company's highest honor, at ceremonies yesterday at the company's Talleyrand terminal in Jacksonville, Fla. Created in 1985, only 50 of the company's 4,300-plus employees have been recognized with the limited edition, bronze sculpture depicting young Thomas Crowley as he ferried goods to and from ships on San Francisco Bay in the early 1890s.

Crowley Delivers Incinerator to Tortola

Crowley's logistics and liner services groups completed the transport of an incinerator to Tortola on Jan. 18 to replace the island's existing trash disposal unit. The government purchased the mid-size incinerator from Consutech, Systems LLC and contracted Crowley to move it from the factory in Richmond, Va. The 42 individual pieces were handled with specialized equipment including 10 flatbeds and four open-top containers. The largest of the pieces was 30 ft long and 13.5 ft high and wide and weighed 80,000 pounds. The total weight of the incinerator was more than 235 tons.

MIL Completes Purchase of TransAmerica Transportation Services

Matson Integrated Logistics (MIL) announced that it has completed the asset purchase of TransAmerica Transportation Services, Inc. (TTS), a third party logistics company based in Akron, Ohio. The new MIL business unit will operate initially under the name TransAmerica Transportation Services LLC and will ultimately be renamed Matson Integrated Logistics. The unit will retain virtually all of TTS's current management team. Specializing in truck brokerage services throughout North America, TTS currently moves over 50,000 shipments annually, generating revenues of approximately $45 million during the latest twelve month period. The company offers various brokerage services, including truckload, less-than-truckload, expedited services, and intermodal.

ACL Establishes National Sales Force

American Commercial Lines Inc. announced it has established a national sales force in key geographic locations. The Regional Sales Directors include Mr. Vanta Coda -- Gulf Region, Mr. Gabe Forir -- Midwest Region, Mr. Michael Wiercinski -- MidAtlantic/Northeast, Mr. Neil Grossman -- Southeast Region, Mr. John Bryan -- Pittsburgh, and Mr. Sean Smith -- Ohio River Valley. The new directors have extensive backgrounds in rail, barge, 3PL logistics, chemical transportation, pulp and paper transportation, trucking, and truck brokerage.
