ABB Turbocharging Launches Digital Tools to Save Fuel

ABB Turbocharging has launched a new digital solution designed to offer shipowners simplified management of propulsion efficiency and CO2 emissions monitoring and reporting, and potentially unlock up to 20% fuel savings.The new digital suite, called Tekomar XPERT marine, comprises three modules—engine, hull and propeller, and emissions—which, combined, provide actionable insights into ship performance to help shipping companies make better operating decisions and potentially reduce fuel usage. This, in turn, enables vessels to achieve improved carbon intensity index (CII) ratings.

Seaspan Forward Fixes Five-year Contracts for 10 Containerships

Seaspan Corporation announced it has forward fixed contracts for 10 containerships with a "major liner customer", bringing the company's total 2021 forward fixtures to 58 vessels, or approximately 50% of its time chartered fleet.The vessels, representing approximately 100,000 TEU in aggregate, were previously scheduled to have four charters expire in 2022, four charters expire in 2023, and two charters expire in 2024, Seaspan said. Korean engine manufacturer HSD Engine is to offer ABB’s diagnostics and advisory software Tekomar XPERT to shipowners operating its two-stroke and four-stroke marine engines.Tekomar XPERT is a digital performance optimization platform applicable to any engine that is designed to help shipping companies achieve substantial fuel savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions. Port of Corpus Christi Inks LNG Bunkering Deal with Stabilis

Seaspan Orders 10 Dual-fuel LNG Containerships

Seaspan Corporation announced Friday that it has entered into an agreement to order up to 10 dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) containerships from South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries.Seaspan, a wholly owned subsidiary of Atlas Corp., said the deal is for five ultra-modern 15,000 TEU newbuilds, with an option for an additional five. Cargotec, JCE Invest AB Form Joint Bulk Business

Cargotec has signed an agreement with JCE Invest AB to establish a joint venture, Bruks Siwertell Group, specialised in dry bulk handling. The new joint venture will own Siwertell AB (previously part of Kalmar Business Area within Cargotec) and BRUKS Holding AB (previously part of JCE Group). Both companies are world-leading suppliers of bulk materials handling solutions. Cargotec will own 48% of the shares in Bruks Siwertell Group, and JCE Invest AB will own the rest, 52%. The ownerships are included to venturers' consolidated financial statements in accordance with the applicable regulation. The transaction has been signed and closed on 9 May 2018. "This joint venture supports Cargotec's strategy to focus on container ports, heavy industrial segment and logistics.

Maersk to Split Into Two Divisions

It's oficial now. Danish conglomerate A.P. Moeller-Maersk A/S said Thursday it is splitting into two separate units - transport and energy businesses. Denmark’s biggest company moves ahead with an historic shake-up of the conglomerate to generate growth, as it battles with the worst shipping downturn in years and a historic oil-price rout. "As announced on 23 June 2016, the Board of Directors has tasked the management of A.P. Møller - Mærsk A/S to perform a review focusing on the strategic and structural options for the Maersk Group with the objective of generating growth, increasing agilities and synergies and unlocking and maximising shareholder value with the long-term view," says a press release from the company. NYK Selects INTTRA eVGM Service

INTTRA, the world's ocean shipping electronic marketplace, and NYK Line, informed that NYK has joined the rapidly growing INTTRA eVGM network for facilitating compliance with new container weight requirements adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which went into effect on July 1, 2016. NYK is offering the INTTRA eVGM Service to customers as one solution via which they can exchange and process the container weight information required to meet the IMO's Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Verified Gross Mass (VGM) requirement. Under SOLAS VGM, every container must have a VGM - or certified weight - to be loaded onto a ship.

MacGregor Signs Loose Lashing Orders for Twelve Container Vessels

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, will supply loose lashings equipment for twelve 19,200 TEU container vessels under construction in South Korea for a European owner. The equipment is planned for delivery during 2016. The order was booked into first quarter 2016 order intake. The ultra-large container ships are being built at two shipyards. Six have been contracted to Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) and the remaining six are under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI). Both shipyards have experience of MacGregor's expertise and capacity to deliver cargo handling and securing systems to large container ships. In addition to the loose lashing system, MacGregor is also delivering hatch covers and fixed lashing gear to the vessels.

GE Gas Turbine to Power Italian Navy Patrol Ship

GE’s Marine Solutions announced it will provide a LM2500+G4 gas turbine that will power the Italian Navy’s new Pattugliatori Polivalenti d’Altura (PPA) multipurpose offshore patrol ship. The PPA’s hybrid electric propulsion system also will use GE’s shock-proof MV3000 drives and a GE-designed electrical network of motors as part of the propulsion system. Avio Aero, a GE Aviation business headquartered in Italy, will have the design responsibility for the gas turbine package. The PPA ship will be built by Fincantieri at its Integrated Shipyard of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano.

MacGregor Cargo Handling for HL Newbuilds

MacGregor has received an order worth USD 21 million for optimised cargo handling systems for five 10,500 TEU container ships currently under construction at South Korean shipyard Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries for German operator Hapag-Lloyd. The ships are under construction at South Korean shipyard Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and are being built for German operator Hapag-Lloyd. They are planned for delivery between October 2016 and May 2017 and will primarily be deployed on South American routes. "Cargo system flexibility during loading and unloading operations, in combination with attaining a vessel's actual payload capacity, is crucial for maximising a ship's revenue and long-term profitability," says Tommi Keskilohko, Director at MacGregor's Customer Solutions.

MacGregor Optimises UASC's Container Vessels Payload

United Arab Shipping Company's first ultra-large container vessel has entered service equipped with a MacGregor high-efficiency cargo handling system, which is designed to maximise payload potential and operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact by minimising emissions per TEU carried. Delivered by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries' (HSHI) Mokpo shipyard on 8th May, Barzan is the first in a series of six 18,800 TEU container carriers for United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), designed to set new standards in fuel and energy efficiency. Habben Jansen Takes over as Hapag-Lloyd CEO

Hapag-Lloyd announced changes in its Executive Board resulting from departure of Michael Behrendt and Ulrich Kranich; Anthony J. Rolf Habben Jansen, who has been a member of the Hapag-Lloyd AG's Executive Board since April 1, has assumed the position of CEO effective July 1. He succeeds Michael Behrendt, who left the Hapag-Lloyd AG's Executive Board as scheduled on June 30, as did COO Ulrich Kranich. The new COO is Anthony J. Firmin who joined the Executive Board today after 19 years at the company. Peter Ganz continues as CFO, a position he has held since April 2009.

MacGregor Wins $50m Cargo Handling Order from HHI

MacGregor believes it is time to think differently, overturning the long-held assumption that cargo profile, cargo handling and cargo securing are considered only at the end of the main ship design process

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, said it has received further orders, worth around $50 million, for optimized cargo handling systems from Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd. in South Korea. The latest contract stems from the United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) exercising its options for six more A-14-series and one more A-18-series container vessels from the yard, taking the total number of 14,500 TEU container ships to eleven and 18,800 TEU containerships to six. The original order, announced in November 2013, saw UASC order five A-14-series and five A-18-series container vessels.
