About half a million barrels of oil is extracted each day from Alaska’s Prudhoe Bay oilfields. One of its drilling sites, Endicott, is located on a spit of land connected by the gravel Prudhoe Bay road system and is normally accessible by truck – until recently, when the road was washed out. Faced with the dilemma of how to get workers, food and supplies to the work site, Hilcorp, a privately-held exploration and production companies in the U.S., turned to Crowley and its hovercraft, Arctic Hawk.

Bowhead Transport Company, LLC, and Crowley Marine Services, Inc., announced the formation of a joint venture to provide marine services in Alaska’s Arctic. The new Alaska-based joint venture will operate under the name UIC Bowhead-Crowley, LLC. Bowhead Transport is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ukpeaġvik Iñupiat Corporation (UIC), the Alaska Native Village Corporation of Barrow, Alaska. Both companies have longstanding histories of providing services in the Arctic with Bowhead Transport Company providing common carriage service for 30 years to the coastal communities of Alaska and Crowley providing marine transportation, energy support and petroleum distribution services for over 60 years throughout the state.

Bruce Harland, Vice President-Commercial Services of Crowley Maritime Corporation, has testified on behalf of Crowley and the American Waterways Operators (AWO) before the U.S. Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee at a field hearing held in Kodiak, Alaska. The hearing, which was held at the request of Sen. Lisa Murkowski (AK-R) and led by Subcommittee chairwoman Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), focused on the need for a robust U.S. Coast Guard presence in Alaska as the nation pursues expanding navigation opportunities in the Arctic region.

In an informal presentation, Captain Jack Jensen, marine superintendent for Tesoro in Nikiski, presented crewmembers of Crowley's tug Vigilant with a third consecutive annual award recognizing their commitment to safety and the environment by concluding 2010 with zero spills and incidents. The Vigilant is on long-term charter to Tesoro and is stationed in Cook Inlet, Alaska, where it provides ship assist and escort services for Tesoro operated tankers moving in and out of the Tesoro Refinery dock (KPL) in Nikiski, Alaska.

Crowley Maritime Corporation announced that it has restructured its petroleum distribution and contract services group, consolidating all Alaska operations under Craig Tornga, vice president. Tornga, who will remain in Anchorage and will continue reporting to Rocky Smith, senior vice president and general manager, will continue to manage Alaska's petroleum distribution and fuel sales but will now also manage tanker assist and escort services in Valdez and Prince William Sound, Alaska, and energy support services on Alaska's North Slope.

Crowley Maritime Corporation announced a restructuring involving three members of its senior leadership team. John Douglass and Rob Grune will move to new positions, with Douglass taking over as senior vice president and general manager of Crowley's Puerto Rico/Caribbean liner services, and Grune taking over as senior vice president and general manager of Crowley's petroleum transportation group. Both executives will remain domiciled in Jacksonville and continue to report to Tom Crowley, chairman, president and CEO.

Crowley Maritime Corporation announced that Charlie Nalen has been named general manager of the company's Valdez operation. In his new position, Nalen will be responsible for the entirety of Crowley's marine operations in Valdez including ship assist and escort services for Alyeska Pipeline Service Company's Ship Escort/Response Vessel System (SERVS). He will report to Bruce Harland, vice president of contract services, Alaska and will relocate from Jacksonville, Fla. to Valdez. Nalen has held a number of related positions during his 29 years with Crowley.

Crowley Maritime Corporation took delivery of the Vigilant, a new Z-Drive tugboat that is being chartered from BayDelta Maritime, Inc., for use in Crowley's ship assist and escort business in Cook Inlet, Alaska. The nimble, powerful, ice-strengthened tug will be stationed at the Tesoro Alaska Company's Nikiski refinery in Cook Inlet on a year-round basis to provide enhanced safety and environmental protection for tankers docking there. Crowley Maritime Corporation announced that Bill Hill has joined the company's energy and marine services group in Anchorage as director of business development. In this role, he will have responsibility for the sales and operation of the North Slope businesses and will work to develop additional opportunities in Alaska as well as the Canadian and Russian Arctic. Hill will report to Bruce Harland, vice president, Alaska contract services. Hill has extensive experience in project management, module construction and transportation, on the North Slope and in Russia.

Barto has profit and loss responsibility for Petroleum Services and reports directly to Tom Crowley Jr., chairman, president and CEO of Crowley Maritime Corporation. Crowley Maritime Corporation Saturday christened and launched barge 455-2, the second of three Heavy Lift 455 Series flat-deck barges that will be built and delivered to Crowley this year by Gunderson Marine in Portland, Oregon. The three 400-foot by 105-foot-wide deck barges are being built to handle project work for the offshore energy industry - primarily in the Gulf of Mexico. The addition of these vessels helps to expand and keep current Crowley's fleet for customers of the company's marine services business segment.
