Feature: Miracle on Ice

Kvaerner Masa-Yards has delivered the $375 million, 2,124-passenger Carnival Miracle, to Carnival Cruise Lines - its 20th Fun Ship - in the traditional handover ceremonies in Helsinki. For anyone who has ever had the privilege to attend such a delivery, seeing a new cruise ship rolled out in the middle of the Finnish winter is truly an awe-inspiring, if not one of the most ironic, sights. However, it is a testament to accrued cruise industry expertise and a stable infrastructure of equipment and system suppliers that keeps the shipyard at the forefront. Carnival Miracle is the sixth cruise ship in the Spirit class series of new Panamax-size cruise ships for Carnival Cruise Lines (four ships) and Costa Crociere (two ships).

Piikkio Works Established Under Kavaerner-Masa Yards

A separate company, Piikkio Works Oy, has been established under Kvaerner Masa-Yards Inc. as a result of transfer of assets. The new company continues as of January 1, 2002, the operations of Kvaerner Masa-Yards Piikkio Works, which previously was a separate business unit within Kvaerner Masa-Yards Inc. The reason for incorporating the company is the independent and different nature of Piikkio Works business activities as a builder of prefabricated cabin and bathroom modules. Kari Ruusunen, previously manager of the business unit, has been appointed president of Piikkio Works Oy. Jorma Wloranta, president and CEO of Kvaerner Masa-Yards Inc., is named as chairman of the board of the new company.

The New Name of Finnish Shipbuilding

The announced merger of Kvaerner Masa-Yards and Aker Finyards — both members of the Aker Yards Groups — draws to a conclusion nearly a decade of change within the Finnish shipbuilding community, while providing the technically talented and market capable company with a clear vision for the future. Long an elite member of the world's select fraternity of "high value ship" builders, the Finnish maritime community has built and maintained a leadership in several technically demanding categories — cruise shipping, LNG carriers and ice ship technology, to name but a few — despite the country's relatively small size, environmental challenges and fierce competition from lower cost competitors in the Far East Aker Yards Group recently announced the merger of Kvaerner Masa-Yards Inc.

Cruise Industry Annual: Plug and Play

Piikkio Works OY, an independent company 100 percent owned by Kvaerner Masa Yards, prides itself on maintaining a technical and design advantage in the construction, delivery and installation of prefabricated cabins for cruise ships. Bringing the saying "plug and play" to an entirely new level, the company coordinates nearly 150 subcontractors to design, build and deliver on-time, on-budget - up to 6,000 complete suites and staterooms per year. Piikkio Works is owned by Kvaerner Masa Yards, and perhaps no greater testament to its system is needed than to note that its cabins are used by a host of other cruise ship builders, most notably Germany's Meyer Werft.
