US Navy Tests Latest Aegis Weapon System

The U.S. Navy conducted a series of cooperative air defense test exercises with the Spanish navy that culminated in live missile firing events using the latest Aegis Weapon System baseline July 20-21. The event was not only the first interoperability test of the latest Aegis Baseline 9.C1 with a foreign ship, but also the first combined Combat Systems Ship Qualification Trial with that country's navy since 2007. Guided-missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) and Spanish frigate Cristobol Colon (F 105) participated in the testing. In addition to live missile firing events, Tactical Data Link interoperability exercises were held July 12-14. "While our combat systems suites are slightly different, the way we operate and execute missions are quite similar," said Cmdr.

US Navy Evaluating SEWIP for LCS

The U.S. Navy is evaluating a scaled-down version of the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) system for potential incorporation on future Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), Naval Sea Systems Command announced, Nov. 20. SEWIP is an evolutionary development block upgrade program for the SLQ-32 Electronic Warfare (EW) System and will be designated as AN/SLQ-32C(V)6. Still in the early stages of development, its purpose is to provide LCS with an improved electronic warfare suite to improve the ship's defense capabilities.

AN/SPY-1 SSSA Completes Critical Design Review

The Critical Design Review (CDR) stage for AN/SPY-1 radar Solid-State Switch Assembly (SSSA)'s high voltage modulator completed Aug. 26, confirming that the design is expected to meet performance requirements. A CDR confirms the system is on track to achieve affordability and cost goals, and establishes the system's initial product baseline. The successful close-out of the CDR milestone means that the SSSA has achieved a high level of maturity, and is ready to start complete hardware design and system testing. SSSA is intended to replace the current vacuum tube modulator switches in the AN/SPY-1 radar transmitter with functionally similar, highly reliable solid-state switches. The AN/SPY-1 radar constitutes the primary air and surface search radar for the AEGIS Weapons System.

Standard Missile Shows Versatility with “Juliet” Flight Test

The Navy executed a successful flight test of the surface-to-air Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) at White Sands Missile Range Aug. 14. During flight test “Juliet,” the Navy examined the missile's ability to intercept a subsonic, low- altitude target over land. Juliet is one of 10 follow-on operational test and evaluation (FOT&E) events planned for SM-6's missile performance and demonstration. "This event demonstrated SM-6's ability to detect and engage a slow moving target in the presence of complex land clutter," said Jim Schuh, Anti-Air Warfare Missiles technical director at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, which is among the Navy's SM-6 partners. The SM-6 provides an over-the-horizon engagement capability when launched from an Aegis warship.

New Missile Range Ship Passes Final Navy Trials

The missile range instrumentation ship 'USNS Howard O. Lorenzen' (T-AGM 25) successfully completed its final contract trials (FCT) in San Diego. FCTs, run by the Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV), mark the final review in a series of post-delivery tests and trials exercising all aspects of the vessel and its systems, including main propulsion, damage control, supply, deck, navigation, habitability, electrical systems and operations. INSURV officials monitored the successful demonstration of the ship's systems including both in-port and at-sea testing.

Navy Conducts DDG 1000 Round Testing

The long range land attack projectile (LRLAP), designed for the DDG 1000 Advanced Gun System, successfully completed two live-fire tests at the White SandsMissile Range in New Mexico, the Navy announced Sept. 22. The mission, conducted Aug. 30, was the first live-fire test to successfully demonstrate LRLAP effectiveness against targets. LRLAP is a 155 millimeter rocket-assisted guided projectile designed to support land-attack and naval surface fire support operations in conjunction with the Advanced Gun System on DDG 1000-class destroyers.

Alion Part of Navy Contract, Advanced Above Water Sensors

Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions company, in conjunction with fourteen other companies, was awarded a $134m contract from the Program Executive Office for Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS) to support the development and procurement of Navy above water sensors. Work under the contract will result in more efficient office and project management functions and continuity over the entire acquisition cycle. PEO IWS 2.0 is the Above Water Sensors Directorate within PEO IWS. Working with prime contractor Systems Planning and Analysis, Inc., Alion will provide support in the areas of program and financial management, engineering and test and evaluation.

Navy Evaluates Display Technology

The Program Executive Officer for Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS), Rear Adm. Tom Bush, hosted an industry day on August 7 to brief interested manufacturers and invite industry feedback on a recently released draft Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) solicitation to manufacture Navy Display Systems as well as develop and produce the Navy's next generation of displays, the Future Common Display System. The Navy's Future Common Display System will be the follow-on to the AN/UYQ-70, Advanced Display System. More than 3,200 AN/UYQ-70, Advanced Display Systems have been produced and integrated into ship, submarine, and aircraft combat systems.

CSC Wins $27M Navy Training Order

Computer Sciences Corporation has received a task order from the Navy Program Executive Officer for Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS) to develop shiphandling simulators and provide enhanced instructional support. The task order, which has one base year and four one-year options, has an estimated value to CSC exceeding $27 million if all options are exercised. Under the new award, CSC will provide both shore- and sea-based trainers to help naval officers improve their mariner skills under the Navy's Navigation, Seamanship and Shiphandling (NSS) program. CSC's Shiphandling Simulator software has been used to provide land-based training to the U.S. Navy for more than 15 years.

Lockheed Martin Delivers Aegis Weapon System to 50th Navy Destroyer

Lockheed Martin celebrated completion and delivery of its 50th destroyer-bound Aegis Weapon System today with a "pull-the-plug" ceremony at the company's Moorestown facility. The ceremony marks the completion of testing and signifies that the system is ready for shipboard installation. The system, to be packed and loaded in 23 tractor trailers, will be delivered for installation in the destroyer Kidd (DDG 100). "We at the Navy truly appreciate the consistent quality you put forth on a daily basis," said Fernando Omega, PEO IWS Project Lead for Aegis Weapon System production. "Pulling Plug is the culmination of a team effort extending throughout the entire production process.

Lockheed Martin Engineers Receive U.S. Navy Honor

Lockheed Martin engineers were part of an industry team that recently received the U.S. Navy's "Program Executive Office Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS) Excellence in Engineering Award" for developing a new submarine sonar system that offers improved capabilities in the littorals. The Low Cost Conformal Array (LCCA) is a new sail-mounted acoustic sonar system that was developed to provide enhanced tactical control for operations in coastal waters. The advanced development model LCCA system was installed on USS Cheyenne (SSN 773) in Pearl Harbor in March. Taylor were responsible for the system's inboard processing and displays, as well as meeting the U.S. Navy's aggressive cost and schedule requirements.

Dahlgren Engineers Ready USS Ronald Reagan

Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren Division engineers, working with their counterparts from other Navy commands and industry, recently completed work to make aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) ready for the ship’s first deployment. Dahlgren engineers are also providing combat systems distance support while the carrier is deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. “This is far-reaching collaboration that makes a difference in our military’s ability to fight, win and come home safely,” said NSWC Dahlgren Commander Capt.
