Wärtsilä, Berge Bulk in Marine Industry’s "First-ever" Shaft Generator Retrofit

Finland's marine technology company Wärtsilä said Tuesday it had retrofitted an inline shaft generator system on the ‘Berge Toubkal’, a cape-size bulk carrier owned by Singapore-based Berge Bulk, in what it said was an industry first."This is the marine industry’s first-ever shaft generator retrofit, and its successful completion will improve the vessel’s Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) while reducing overall carbon footprint," Wärtsilä said."Shaft generator systems onboard ships are driven by the main engine to supply power to the mains, thus saving fuel and emissions.

ABB's Shaft Generator Systems for COSCO's Ten Container Ships

ABB has secured a contract with the Chinese shipyard COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) Co. Ltd., to equip 10 China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited container vessels with its permanent magnet shaft generator systems. Due for delivery by the end of 2025, the order comprises systems for six 14000TEU vessels and four 16000TEU vessels."The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is introducing new regulatory standards – the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) – which will come into force in January 2023.

Mitsubishi, Wärtsilä Joins for Improved Power and Propulsion Solution

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Equipment Co., LTD (MHI-MME) and the smart technology group Wärtsilä have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the commercial marketing of a new energy solution for ships. The solution combines innovative technologies from both companies to produce greater power generation capacity and higher propeller propulsion for marine vessels. By integrating MHI-MME's waste heat recovery and energy saving power generation system (WHRS) with Wärtsilä's operational control technology for shaft generator systems, the new solution results in more energy efficient ship navigation and an improved Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).

Wärtsilä Wins Contract for New CLdN RoRos

Wärtsilä said it has been awarded a contract to supply controllable pitch propellers and power take off / power take home (PTO/PTH) shaft generator systems for two new RoRo vessels being built at the Uljanik shipyard in Croatia. The ships have been ordered by the Luxembourg based operator, CLdN Ro-Ro SA. There is an option for an additional two vessels. Wärtsilä, which booked its orders in December 2016 and February 2017, will supply the vessels with its latest design, WCP G-hub, optimized for high power density.

Class NK Eyes Singapore Renewable Energy Facility

ClassNK has launched a feasibility study for a new marine renewable energy testing facility to be built in Singapore. The announcement was made at the 2014 Asian Clean Energy Summit held in Singapore on 28-29 October 2014. The study will pave the way for the establishment of the world’s first marine renewable energy testing facility to be located in the tropics. Demand for renewable energy has soared in recent years, fuelling high expectations for the use of marine renewable energy. Many governments around the world are already implementing policies to attract new marine renewable energy installations, and the large scale implementation of new renewable energy technologies is under consideration.

Wärtsilä Gas Units Selected for Largest Ever Spar Platform

A new spar platform being built for Statoil's Aasta Hansteen field off the coast of Norway will feature Wärtsilä's Inert Gas and Nitrogen Generator systems, the power solutions company said. The contract has been issued in the first quarter 2014 by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) of South Korea, the yard building the platform. The Wärtsilä Inert Gas Generator will utilize titanium in its construction, the first time ever that this material has been used in such a system. Titanium was preferred due to its superior corrosion resistance in relation to sea water. China Offshore Inert Gas Orders for Norway's WTS

Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions (WTS) say they have secured multiple orders to supply Maritime Protection Inert Gas Generator (IGG) systems for installation on vessels under construction for operations offshore China. The Maritime Protection systems will be installed on three FPSOs for oil major China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC). Two identical systems, comprising a deck house module with electric power, fuel and sea water supply/discharge, will be supplied for two FPSOs which will operate in the Bohai oil field in northern China.

Wärtsilä to Supply Gas Systems for New Teekay LNG Carriers

Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply a combined inert gas generator and gas combustion unit for two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers being built at the DSME yard in South Korea. The ships will be owned by Canada based Teekay Corporation, one of the world's largest marine energy transportation, storage and production companies. The contract was signed in May 2013. The concept of combining the two systems was developed by Wärtsilä in cooperation with DSME, and the system burns the boil off gas using an already existing Wärtsilä Moss inert gas generator.

Wärtsilä to supply a combined inert gas generator & gas combustion unit for 2 new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers being built at the DSME yard in South Korea for Canada-based Teekay Corp. The concept of combining the two systems was developed by Wärtsilä in cooperation with DSME, and the system burns the boil off gas using an already existing Wärtsilä Moss inert gas generator. In so doing, it eliminates the need for a conventional gas combustion unit thus providing capital expenditure savings for the customer. Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled to begin in autumn 2014.

Wärtsilä to Supply FSU, Shuttle Tanker, Inert Gas Systems

Wärtsilä is to supply inert gas systems for a Floating Storage Unit (FSU) on Norway's Heidrun offshore oil & gas field, and for two supporting shuttle tankers. The FSU is owned by Statoil, the Norwegian state owned energy company, and the tankers by AET Tanker Holdings, the Singapore based petroleum transportation company. All three vessels are being built by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in South Korea. The Wärtsilä contract with SHI was signed in February 2013. Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for October, 2013.

Asia's First Floating LNG Project to Have GE Compressors

GE Oil & Gas to supply gas turbine-driven compressor train technology to Malaysia’s Petronas for a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility. The start-up of the FLNG facility is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2015. It will be moored about 180 kilometers off the coast of Bintulu, Sarawak, and is designed to produce 1.2 million tons a year (mtpa) of LNG. Once on stream, the facility will boost Malaysia’s total LNG production capacity to 26.9 mtpa from 25.7 mtpa currently. GE’s compression trains are vital elements of the liquefaction process, which cools natural gas to a liquid state. The Type 45 ships are designed and built by BAE Systems and are the most advanced warships ever produced in the UK. NATO Mine Research Targets CSS Test Range

From an unassuming block structure nestled between luxury waterfront condominiums, a team of international scientists quietly conducted experiments last week that will have a profound impact on the way ships protect themselves from mines in the future. Research Project operations took place June 10-15 in the Gulf of Mexico at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren's Coastal Systems Station (CSS) training range in Panama Beach. Forty five technical experts from the United Kingdom, Norway, the Netherlands, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Australia, the U.S. and NATO's Supreme Allied Command Atlantic Undersea Research Center in La Spezia, Italy supported the trials. ship USS Warrior (MCM 10) and US Coast Guard patrol boat Coho were also key elements of the trials.

GD Units Awarded $18 Million in Defense Contracts

General Dynamics announced that two of its units - General Dynamics Robotic Systems and General Dynamics C4 Systems - have been awarded Defense Department contracts worth more than $18 million. On March 25, General Dynamics Robotic Systems (Westminster, Md.) was awarded a $6.1 million modification to an existing contract for the production of 33 M56 smoke generator systems and five gas turbine engines. Work will be performed in Westminster (M56 Systems) and Phoenix, Ariz. (M56 systems and gas turbine engines), and is to be completed by Jan. 2003. The U.S. Robert Morris Acquisition Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., is the contracting activity.

Curtiss-Wright Awarded $14.6M in Contracts

Curtiss-Wright Corporation announced it has been awarded $14.6 million of contracts from Northrop Grumman Newport News to design and manufacture engineered pumps for use on the United States Navy's next generation CVN-21 Class aircraft carriers. The pumps will be manufactured by Curtiss-Wright's Flow Control segment located in Phillipsburg, NJ, and delivered in 2008 and 2009.
