Albwardy Damen Celebrates Tenth Anniversary

Albwardy Damen celebrated its tenth anniversary on November 15th by officially opening its new ship repair facility at Dubai Maritime City (DMC). Over 100 guests from both the regional maritime industry and the Dubai government joined the Albwardy Damen management team at their new DMC workshop and Dubai HQ for the opening ceremony, followed by lunch on board the famous Queen Elizabeth II (QE2) ocean liner. Two New Tugs for Rimorchiatori Riuniti

Italian tug operator Rimorchiatori Riuniti has continued its fleet expansion with the deliveries of two new Damen tugs; an ASD 2913 called Danimarca and an ASD 2411 called Columbia. The delivery of the Danimarca took place in Genoa on June 14, 2017. This new tug will join the ASD 2913 Germania that joined the company’s fleet at the beginning of the year. Like her sister vessel, the Danimarca has also been installed with FiFi 1 and an aft winch, in addition to oil recovery and escort capabilities.

UAE Shipyard Begins Operations as Albwardy Damen

Albwardy Marine Engineering and Damen Shipyards Sharjah have officially brought both brands together under one umbrella. Under the new name, Albwardy Damen, the United Arab Emirates-based shipyard will continue to construct newbuild steel and aluminum vessels as well as provide the same ship repair services to its marine and oil and gas customers in the Middle East. Albwardy Marine Engineering was founded in 1978 and has been a joint venture with Damen Shipyards Group since 2008. In 2014 the official opening of Damen Shipyards Sharjah took place.

Good Year for Damen Shipyards Sharjah

Damen Shipyards Sharjah (DSS) was officially opened in January 2014. Now, two years later, the yard celebrates its anniversary with a total of 13 vessels being dry-docked simultaneously. The vessels include pilot boats, landing craft, OSVs, as well as a cable-laying vessel. DSS has had success since its opening in both the newbuild and conversion markets, as well as the repair sector. In 2015 DSS we delivered eight newbuilds, carried out two complex conversions and dry-docked 165 vessels from all the major operators in the region. Patrol Boat Delivered to Mohamed Saqr Alfalahi

A new 20-meter aluminum patrol vessel, AD Comet, has been delivered to Mohamed Saqr Alfalahi General Maintenance to replace the company’s current vessel, undertaking general and patrol duties in the Abu Dhabi waters. TORM Contracts Albwardy for Diving Services

Danish product tanker carrier TORM A/S and UAE-based Albwardy Marine Engineering (AME), an Albwardy-Damen JV, have signed a Service Level Agreement for diving services in the UAE region. The purpose is to further strengthen their relations and respective commercial reliability. The diving services will be handled from AME’s facilities in Fujairah and include full hull cleanings and propeller polishing. The Gulf Set to Rival China's Ship Repair Capacity

“The Middle East is a world-class centre of excellence for ship repair with a number of well respected shipyards already offering a diverse range of services. We are seeing new joint ventures between the region and Asia in the dry dock sector, with the Gulf set to offer the largest ship repair capacity outside of China,” noted Chris Hayman, Chairman of Seatrade, organisers of Seatrade Middle East Maritime. Damen Stan Tug 1606 for Jan De Nul

Dredging company, Jan De Nul, has had 11 Damen Stan Tugs join its fleet in the last few years. In 2008, Jan De Nul placed an order for five additional Stan Tugs after another major order in 2007 when the Belgian firm ordered six Stan Tugs, as well as four Damen Fast Crew Suppliers. To be delivered over a period of 18 months, the five latest vessels have all been built at Albwardy Marine Engineering in Dubai, one of Damen’s joint venture shipyards in the Middle East. Growth in Middle East Shipbuilding, Repair

While the world is in the grip of an economic slowdown, the Arabian Gulf remains a dynamic growth centre for ship building and repair, said a maritime industry observer. “The region is one of the busiest commercial maritime hubs with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar having major ports and shipyards with more being built,” said Christopher Hayman, Chairman of Seatrade, organisers of the region's premier event focused on workboats to be held in Abu Dhabi later this year. Workboats include tugs, ferries, supply vessels; police, fire, patrol, pilot, rescue and oil spill boats; along with, dredgers, barges and floating cranes, with more than 2,000 such vessels estimated to be docked or repaired in the Middle East.

400 in 10: Water Bus Market Emerges

Models of water taxis and water buses on display at the Middle East Workboats exhibition and conference taking place in Abu Dhabi.

Regional demand for fast vessels carrying between eight and up to 300 passengers could exceed 400 over the next 10 years, said shipbuilders from countries such as the Netherlands, Turkey, Norway and Australia hoping to win a share of orders. “We are anticipating there is going to be a huge demand for passenger transport of all kinds,” said Martin de Bruijn, Middle East sales director for Damen Shipyards of the Netherlands which recently announced a joint venture with Albwardy Marine Engineering of Dubai.

Damen Starts Joint Venture

Damen announced that the Damen Shipyards Group has purchased 49 percent of the shares of Albwardy Marine Engineering (AME), Dubai, United Arab Emirates AME is a company active in ship repair, shipbuilding, repair of offshore units and diving activities. AME has facilities in Dubai, Fujairah (UAE) and Salalah (Oman). AME employs approximately 780 people, of whom the vast majority is active in repair. Participating in AME enables Damen to construct vessels (high speed naval craft, ferries, tugs, workboats and dredgers) in Dubai for the local market, as well as serving Damen customers through repairs and services.

Albwardy Awarded Tug Contract

Nakilat-SvitzerWijsmuller (the joint venture company set-up by SvitzerWijsmuller and Qatar Gas Transport Company - Nakilat), has awarded UAE's Albwardy Marine Engineering a contract to build five tugboats.
