Great Lakes Dredging Awards Announced

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation announced that it was recently awarded four contracts with an approximate value of $93 million. Great Lakes received two awards for coastal protection work required along the East Coast as a result of the extensive damage caused by Super Storm Sandy in 2012 and other more recent storms. The first award is a $30 million contract that involves sand replenishment and dune building from Kismet to Seaview on Fire Island, New York. Approximately 1.3 million cubic yards of sand will be dredged and pumped onto the beach. This barrier island helps protect back-bay communities along Great South Bay and Moriches Bay. Work is expected to be complete by December 2016.

Moore Boat Debuts 25-foot Outboard

Moore Boat has introduced its all new aluminum 25-foot outboard, The Moore 25 OB. The Moore 25 OB was designed in house and with the assistance of CDI - Band Lavis Division. The new boat is the builder’s first application of its patented Moore Boat hull design propelled by an outboard. The Moore 25 OB has been designed with a parallelogram hydraulic engine lift that is capable of raising the single 300 horsepower outboard a full two feet. This ability allows for optimized shallow draft operation while underway, maximized full economy and performance benefits, according to the builder.

Damaged Crew Boat Salvaged in Gulf of Mexico

Inland Salvage Inc. completed the salvage of a crew boat in the Gulf of Mexico. The vessel began taking on water after striking a structure during offshore operations. Attempts to bring the vessel in under her own power ended approximately 15 miles offshore from Pascagoula, MS when the seas began washing over her bow. All crewmembers safely abandoned the vessel and she was soon set adrift unmanned. Inland Salvage was contacted by the owner and mobilized crews to begin salvage operations.

DuraPoly Boats delivered a 10'x32', 100% plastic powerhouse workboat to Back Bay Marine Service. It features a tunnel hull design, a 5,000 crane, is powered by twin 200 Yamaha motors, attains a top speed of 40mph and can run in 12 inches of water. Veson Nautical Expands to New Corporate Headquarters

BOSTON, MA– July 19, 2011 –Veson Nautical, a premier provider of maritime commercial management and trading software solutions, announced today that the company has moved into a 20,000 square foot space in the Back Bay Area of Boston, at 500 Boylston Street. Veson, which has won several workplace awards this year, including top small company to work for by Inc. Magazine, has been growing dynamically over the last several years. This is the company’s third expansion in seven years. Architect Belinda Watts of Watts O’Keefe Studio designed the space at 500 Boylston with input from a panel of Veson employees, and workspace design by Roger Kaufman and Sara Boyce of Environments at Work.

Bridge Collapsed By Chain of Barges

According to a report from the Sun Herald, on March 22, salvage crews removed debris from the Back Bay two days after a chain of eight barges crashed into the Popp’s Ferry Bridge in Biloxi, MS. The collapsed spans were lifted from atop one of the barges. Two cranes, tugboats and other heavy equipment were moved in to do the work. (Source: Sun Herald)

PA Governor Calls Delaware River Dredging Project a Milestone

Governor Edward G. Rendell hailed the signing of a historic agreement that will officially begin a five-year, $379 million project to deepen the ’s shipping channel, calling it a major milestone in ongoing efforts to expand commerce and enhance economic development in the region. The partnership agreement between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) represents a significant step forward in a 15-year effort to deepen the river’s shipping channel. The agreement was signed by Assistant Secretary of the Army John Paul Woodley Jr. and PRPA Chairman John H. Estey. “I consider this to be the most important project in the history of the ,” said Governor Rendell.

Dejong & Lebet to Design Dinner Boat

Biloxi, Miss.-based Starship Cruise Line, Inc. recently appointed Dejong & Lebet, Inc. to design, and Freeport Shipbuilding, Inc. to construct a 175 ft. yacht styled dinner/cruise vessel. M/V Starship will be docked on Biloxi's Back Bay and "Gold Coast" beaches. Interior design will be provided by Plachter-Vogel Design. The shallow-draft, Subchapter K-classed vessel will hold up to 600 passengers and will be powered by two Stewart & Stevenson Series 600 main engines at 40 hp each, as well as twin 275 kW generators.

Coast Guard Responds to Tug Fire

The Coast Guard is investigating a tug fire that occurred yesterday south of Demopolis, Ala. on the Tombigbee Waterway. The Alabama Marine Police notified the coast guard Monday morning when the tug, Nonnie, pushing six empty hopper barges had caught on fire and was drifting south on the Tombigbee Waterway. The Coast Guard Cutter, Wedge, from Demopolis, an HU-25 Falcon jet from Aviation Training Center Mobile, and pollution response and investigation teams from Marine Safety Office Mobile were immediately dispatched to the scene. The vessel, owned and operated by Equipment Chartering Company inc. in bay St. Louis, Miss., was en route with the barges to a quarry on the Tennessee River from Back Bay Biloxi, Miss.

Mississippi Port facilities and Navigation Channels Approach Operational Status

Coastal port facilities in Mississippi are nearing operational status as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and U.S. Navy have worked to clear and survey all channels. “We have surveyed all the channels to Mississippi’s major coastal ports since Hurricane Katrina hit the coast,” said Patrick Robbins, Public Affairs Officer, Mobile District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Pascagoula ship channels are cleared to a depth of 36-feet and Bayou Casotte to 41-feet. Gulfport Harbor is now cleared to 30-feet and Biloxi Harbor from 9-feet in the lateral channel to 12-feet in the east access channel.
