The 50-year-old flattop, built across the Hampton Roads waterway at Newport News Shipbuilding, will lead a carrier strike group eastward to conduct operations in the 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation — essentially, the Persian Gulf, north Arabian Sea and the Mediterranean.
