U.S. Navy awards Lockheed Martin US$57-million contract to upgrade electronic warfare (EW) ship defense system. Under this low-rate production contract for Block 2 of the Navy's Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP), Lockheed Martin will upgrade the AN/SLQ-32(V)2 system found on all U.S. aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers and other warships with key capabilities to determine if the electronic sensors of potential foes are stalking the ship. "The SEWIP Block 2 upgrade will ensure the AN/SLQ-32 system continues to outpace the threat and establishes a framework to easily install future upgrades," said Joe Ottaviano , SEWIP program director for Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training.

Davit Engineering, a division of Davit Sales Inc. recently completed the design and construction drawings for two new floating piers in Staten Island for receiving loaded barges of paper from NYC for recycling. The piers are 140 ft. long x 6 ft. wide floating structures the first of which commissioned just days prior to the worst storm in the New York area’s history, Hurricane Sandy. Derecktor Shipyards has been granted a contract by Lighthouse Landings to construct a 115 ft. (35 m) aluminum high-speed catamaran ferry to be built at the yard's Mamaroneck, N.Y. facility. The catamaran holds the distinction of being the premiere vessel in a fleet of four that will be built for a new passenger service scheduled to begin in Spring/Summer 2001 between Stamford, Conn. and New York City. The vessels' operator, Lighthouse Landings, through its operating subsidiary, New York Fast Ferries Services, Inc. (NYFF) currently provides fast commuter service between Highlands, N.J. and New York City. The new vessels will be built to a design in accordance with Nigel Gee and Associates (NGA) of Southampton, England.

The two vessels will be built on plans by Camarc Small Craft Designs of Worthing, UK in Derecktor's Mamaroneck, N.Y. facility. Delivery is slated for fall 2000. The Sandy Hook Pilots serve the port of New York. They operate four boats from a stationary mother ship anchored near Ambrose Lighthouse in open waters and in a rough environment. The clean and modern look of the new boats is due in part to the new fendering system which ensures great durability together with very high impact resistance. The continuous fender is cleaner than traditional tires and also safer because it avoids dangerous "hanging up".
