The world’s most famous luxury yacht is operating an advanced BIO-SEA ballast water treatment system from France’s BIO-UV Group.Christina O, the 1943-built motor yacht named after the only daughter of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, was fitted with a low-flow BIO-SEA system last year as part of a major refurbishment at the D.K Fotinakis yard, in Greece.To fit the limited space available in the 325ft long vessel’s machinery room, the 87m3/h capacity BIO-SEA L03-0087 system was supplied on two separate skids – one housing all mechanical components…

Volvo Penta, Danfoss Editron Power Hybrid CTVs

A pair of hybrid-electric crew transfer vessels (CTV) being built for Danish operator MHO&Co will be powered by propulsion systems manufacturer Volvo Penta and electrification specialist Danfoss Editron.The 35-meter CTVs were designed by MHO&Co in cooperation with Incat Crowther in the U.K. and Australia and are being constructed at the Afai Southern Shipyard in China for delivery in 2021.Volvo Penta marine gensets will help power these vessels – the electric propulsion power for the driveline will come from five variable speed Volvo D8 gensets.

Vigor Wins $30 Mln Ship Maintenance Contract

U.S. West Coast shipbuilder and repair provider Vigor Marine has been awarded a $30,269,098 firm-fixed-price contract for a 120-calendar day post shakedown shipyard availability of the expeditionary sea base ship Miguel Keith (T-ESB 5), owned and operated by the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command.Work will be performed in Portland, Ore. and is expected to be complete by December 2020.Work will include the furnishing of general services, shipboard access, clean and gas free tank voids and cofferdams…

MODEC Unveils New FPSO Designs

Japanese floating production specialist MODEC has developed a pair of next generation new build hull designs for floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels developed in partnership with Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding, targeting greater production and storage capacity.As a result of increases in required crude oil and gas production capacities, FPSO topsides have become bigger and heavier, which has led to insufficient deck space area and insufficient crude oil storage capacity on on converted very large crude carriers (VLCC), MODEC said.

Iconic USS Ranger Dismantled

A two-year project to dismantle and recycle the decommissioned U.S. Navy vessel USS Ranger (CV-61) has recently concluded. Ordered in 1954 and commissioned in 1957, the Ranger was the first U.S. carrier vessel built as an angled-deck ship from inception. She served in the Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf, and earned 13 battle stars for her service in the Vietnam War. During her 37 years of service, she also appeared in blockbuster films such as Top Gun and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Daspos Opens its Doors in the US

Danish manufacturer of oil mist and gas leakage detection systems Daspos A/S has opened its new Daspos International, Inc. office in the greater Seattle area to service the maritime industry. Daspos manufactures and markets the patented LAS-10 oil mist and gas leakage detection system for surveillance and prevention of on-board fires through early discovery of either oil mist or gasses in primarily the open engine room. According to Daspos, two thirds of all on-board fires start in the engine room.

Marcon Sells Ocean-going Tank Barge

Marcon International, Inc. of Coupeville, Washington started out the New Year right with the sale of the ocean-going, combo deck / tank barge “PCC Provider” on 3rd January to Alaskan buyers. The 5,451 mtdw, 250’ x 74’ x 19’ depth barge was specifically designed by Dixon Naval Architects and built in 1999 by CSC Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China for transport of up to 6,200 short tons of limestone rock on deck and/or approx. 1,000,000 U.S. gallons of liquid slurry in 10 double-hull, cargo tanks with corrugated bulkheads, and fitted with agitator impellers, centerline piping and access tunnel. The double raked barge was heavily built with a 7/8” plate deck and 5/8” side & chine, and 3/8” bottom and fitted with twin towing skegs and a small push notch aft.

First MAN 175D Engines Ordered

MAN Diesel & Turbo has won a contract to supply the first shipset (plus an option for six more, to be confirmed) of GenSets for the multipurpose, offshore patrol vessel – Pattugliatore Polivalente d' Altura (PPA) – program. Each vessel will feature four 12V175D GenSets, each delivering 1,640 kW. The newbuildings have been ordered as part of the Italian Navy’s “Programma di Rinnovamento” fleet renewal program. “We already have several 175D test installations in operation but this is really the breakthrough for the engine,” said Lex Nijsen, Head of Four-Stroke Marine, MAN Diesel & Turbo.

Swedish Club Report Shines Light on Vessel Claims

The life of seafarers is never straightforward, and as a new report from the Swedish Club shows, the hazards and job complexities they face are very much dependent on the type of vessel they find themselves crewing. In P&I Claims Analysis, published this week, the Club has studied thousands of incidents in the last ten years, across a range of vessel segments and claims types, and made some interesting discoveries. Seafarers on containerships needs to watch their step, as almost 60% of all slips and falls occur on container vessels – almost certainly due to the amount of debris on board and the number of people involved in cargo operations.

Wärtsilä Launches WTT-40 Transverse Thruster

Wärtsilä is launching its new Wärtsilä WTT-40 transverse thruster. The first WTT-40's have been ordered and are scheduled for delivery during 2016. This first variant is part of Wärtsilä's new transverse thruster series and features a 4000 kW power level and a 3400 mm diameter controllable pitch propeller, neither of which have been available in Wärtsilä's current product range. While Wärtsilä has designed and built large, up to 5500 kW, transverse thrusters as customised versions, the WTT-40 and others in the WTT range address customer needs for  high power transverse thrusters for bow and stern applications. Development work on the Wärtsilä WTT-40 began in 2015 in response to market demand.

3D-Simulator Generates Training, Expertise on Subs

A new diesel generator simulator has been delivered to Pearl Harbor naval facilities by the TechSolutions program at the Office of Naval Research (ONR), officials at ONR announced March 18. High-fidelity 3D software will allow Sailors to use 50-inch touch screens to see and access all parts of the massive generators aboard Virginia-class subs. The Navy's Virginia-class submarines are among the most technically advanced vessels ever built. But even these cutting-edge, fast-attack, nuclear-powered boats need emergency generators on hand and Sailors trained to operate and repair them. "This will be a big help for the fleet, getting Sailors more training time and providing potentially significant cost savings," said ONR Command Master Chief Jessie Thomas.

Eastern Debuts ‘Thunderbolt’ Towboat

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. introduced its new 120-foot, 4,200-horsepower Inland Towboat design, THUNDERBOLT, combining twin electric V-Pod propulsion and diesel-electric technology for what the builder calls its “vision of the future for the U.S. Eastern said the idea for the THUNDERBOLT came from across the aisle conversations at the 2013 International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans. On the rivers, thruster propulsion systems are starting to get noticed and are outperforming conventional nozzle propeller propulsion systems with main/flanking rudder steering. Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. and Verhaar Omega, B.V. began discussions and realized they were driving towards a more refined towboat thruster propulsion system design.

Golden Energy Orders PARAT Boiler Plant

Golden Energy Offshore said it has decided to expand their fleet to meet the increasing demand of ORO vessels and NOFO class requirements and will within the end of March reclassify and update the ship Energy Swan according to the 2009 regulations. Energy Swan is a PSV/ROV of ST-216 L design, built at Brattvaag Shipyard in 2005. Part of and included in PARAT’s scope of supply will be combined electric steam and hot water boiler with capacity each of 1,250kW, including all necessary equipment for an oil recovery mobilization.

A Closer Look inside the Alfa Laval Test & Training Center

Just two months remain until the inauguration of the Alfa Laval Test & Training Center on January 15, 2014. Originally conceived for the development of PureSOX and other emission control technologies, it has grown to incorporate far more than just exhaust systems. Now that the majority of the equipment is in place, it is possible to take a deeper look into the details of this remarkable new facility. Located on the site of the former Aalborg Shipyard in Aalborg, Denmark, the new Alfa Laval Test & Training Center is an imposing structure.

New Alfa Laval Test & Training Center

Work continues on the Alfa Laval Test & Training Center in Aalborg, Denmark, a facility that will greatly expand Alfa Laval’s marine testing capabilities. The center, which will serve as a springboard for faster and more effective R&D, will further strengthen Alfa Laval’s capacity for innovative marine solutions that optimize the performance of onboard equipment, save energy and help ship owners comply with environmental legislation. While the center’s official inauguration is not scheduled until 15 January 2014, some full-scale prototype testing will be initiated during the month of October.

USS Makin Island: Proven Fuel Efficient

USS Makin Island (LHD 8) is the last in a series of 8 amphibious assault ships of the WASP-class built by Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding at its Pascagoula, Miss. shipyard. Though last, it is the first in the series fitted with hybrid electric gas turbine propulsion, and recently returned to its San Diego homeport after its first deployment. “During the seven-month deployment, the ship’s hybrid-electric propulsion system saved more than four million gallons of fuel resulting in an estimated cost savings in excess of $15 million,” the Navy claims.

The naming of Service Support Vessel DP Gezina in Hardinxveld – Giessendam was performed by Mrs. Gezina Roelofs, and witnessed by the 200 guests attending the event. Mrs. Gezina Roelofs is the mother of the owner of Chevalier Floatels, Marcel Roelofs. With Chevalier Floatels new flagship, DP Gezina completed, both Chevalier Floatels and Holland Shipyards companies have added another vessel to their track record. During the conversion the vessel was lengthened by nine meters and sponsons were added to improve the sea keeping and make the vessel more comfortable for those onboard.
