Spain's SENER will be present at the 15th edition of the Asia Pacific Maritime (APM) Exhibition, which will be held from March 14 to 16, 2018 at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. “Britannia rules the waves” paid a glowing tribute to the maritime past of the United Kingdom. Over the past three centuries as the sun began to set on the British power, resilient U.K. with its pioneering characteristics began its voyage of transformation to become a world-class maritime services center, with one of the largest clusters of marine insurance, ship finance, law, classification societies, ship broking, education and consultancy organizations. Significantly, two factors were responsible for this change. The first being marine transport, since it was the only point of access to the British Isles, and the second was the maritime trade and naval power that have had a great impact on the maritime sector influencing the country’s economy for several centuries.

Royal Thai Navy (RTN)'s plan to buy submarines is on again with strong backing from Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon who wants Thailand’s fleet to be on par with neighbouring countries. Defence minister Prawit Wongsuwon was quoted as saying by Bangkok Post on Wednesday that the country needs to equip its navy, who wants Thailand’s fleet to be on par with neighboring countries. The Minister thinks that Thailand must develop naval equipment, fleet and its neighboring countries in order to maintain the same level. The budget allocation for the same could be around 36 billion baht ($1.1 billion), the report said. Thailand’s plan to acquire submarines is neither new nor surprising.

The Government of Canada joined Irving Shipbuilding and its employees today marked the signing of the $2.3 billion Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) build contract at Halifax Shipyard. Early in the coming year, the U.S. export control regime governing the shipbuilding supply chain will undergo a sea change with the implementation of export reform in the naval and marine categories of the U.S. Munitions List (USML) and the Commerce Control List (CCL). Reforms affecting the aerospace industry(1)  were published April 16, 2013(2)  and took effect October 15 of this year, and the final rules published on July 8, 2013 for the naval and marine categories will take effect on January 6, 2014. As previously reported,(3)  one of the goals of the export reform initiative is to protect the nation’s “crown jewels” with higher export control walls while removing restrictions on less important items and technologies in order to promote, among other things, interoperability of U.S.

BAE Systems has reached agreement in principle with HM Government on measures to enable the implementation of a restructuring of its U.K. naval ships business. The new submarine was named 'Artful' in a traditional ceremony at the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness. OSX, an EBX Group Company focused on offshore naval industry, received the Installation License for its Shipbuilding Unit, which will be installed at the Açu Superport Industrial Complex, in São João da Barra (RJ). The document was issued on June 22nd, 2011, approximately one year after the beginning of the environmental licensing process. OSX will commence construction of the largest shipyard of the Americas in the month of July, creating approximately 14,000 direct jobs; 10,000 of them during the shipyard´s operational phase and 4,000 during the implementation and construction phase. The Açu Shipbuilding Unit team will benefit from training and professional capacity building provided by the Naval Technology Institute (ITN).

Dockwise Ltd. announces that its subsidiary Dockwise Shipping has entered into contracts with the Spanish naval shipyard Navantia for the transport of two Canberra-class amphibious helicopter carriers (LHD) and with the Russian naval shipyard Zvezda for the transport of two nuclear powered submarines. Navantia, located in Ferrol, Spain, a naval shipyard, is building the two LHD's for the Australian Navy. The hull of the vessels and its outfitting will, to a large extend be completed by the Spanish yard. The final construction, outfitting and commissioning will be performed by Australian contractors. In this arrangement the transport to Melbourne on the deck of a semi submersible transport vessel is the preferred option.

France's two main warship makers, DCN and Thales SA, won EU approval to combine their shipbuilding businesses, boosting the prospect of wider consolidation in Europe's fragmented naval sector. The French government has backed the deal, in which state-owned naval shipyard DCN is buying Thales' shipbuilding activities in France _ excluding its parts-making business. Thales has taken a 25 percent stake in DCN, with the option of raising the stake to 35 percent over the next two years. The European Commission said its investigation showed the deal would not cause antitrust problems because the two already cooperate closely and a number of effective rivals would remain standing.
