A U.S.-China tit-for-tat over tariffs hasn’t dampened cargo volume growth at the Port of Oakland. In fact, the Port is on track for its third straight year of record container volume in 2018, stated the Port authorities.But can it last? That’s the question supply chain experts pondered this week at the quarterly meeting of the Port’s Efficiency Task Force. Forty trade and transportation executives ranging from longshore labor representatives to cargo owners gathered to discuss trade dynamics. The Ocean Alliance has launched its new Day Two Product with an estimated 3.6 million TEU carrying capacity provided by approximately 340 containerships deployed on 41 services. The new offering will commence in April 2018. Alliance partners CMA CGM, COSCO, Evergreen and OOCL will offer 20 Transpacific services, six Asia-Europe services, four Asia-Mediterranean services, four Transatlantic services, five Asia-Middle East services and two Asia-Red Sea services. “Ocean Alliance has been a fantastic success from a customer perspective since its launch last spring and we are very enthusiastic to announce our Day Two Product,” said Olivier Nivoix, Senior Vice President Ocean Alliance Lines.

Matson, Inc. president and chief executive officer Matthew J. Cox will succeed retiring chairman of the board Walter A. Dods, the company announced today. The appointment becomes effective at the end of the company's annual shareholders’ meeting today, as Dods retires in accordance with the company's corporate governance guidelines limiting board members’ age. “In my nearly 30 years associated with Matson, I've never felt stronger about its leadership and long-term prospects,” Dods said.

Maersk Line introduces a new service – the AE7 – on the Asia-North Europe trade and a new service – the TP16 – on the Transpacific trade. The new services will enable MSC and Maersk Line to accommodate the incoming volumes from the recently announced slot purchase agreements with Hyundai Merchant Marine and Hamburg Süd. The two carriers will move cargo, but not operate vessels in the 2M network. “With these exciting product improvements we confirm our commitment to provide extensive direct coverage and best in class transit times to our customers in the Asia-Europe and Transpacific trades,” says Silvia Ding, Head of Trade in Maersk Line. “Our new slot agreements require that we increase our capacity.

Members of the OCEAN ALLIANCE, COSCO Container Lines, CMA CGM, Evergreen Line and Orient Overseas Container Line,  signed a document entitled the Day One Product, which sets out the proposed OCEAN ALLIANCE’s network, including port rotation for each service loop. The Day One network intends to deploy around 350 container vessels with an estimated total carrying capacity of 3.5 million TEUs to provide one of the most comprehensive service coverage in the market on the following trade lanes. Dave Hoppes, Matson’s senior vice president, ocean services, will retire March 31, 2015, the company announced. John Lauer, currently vice president, Transpacific services at the company's wholly-owned subsidiary, Matson Navigation Company, Inc., will succeed Hoppes as senior vice president, ocean services, effective March 31, 2015. The company also announced that Chris Scott, currently director, Asia at Matson Navigation Company, will succeed Lauer as vice president, Transpacific services at Matson Navigation Company, effective March 31, 2015, as part of the transition plan.

Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), the world's two largest container shippers, won approval from U.S. maritime regulators for a planned vessel sharing pact, bringing it a step closer after a bid for a larger alliance failed. The so-called 2M alliance would see the two carriers pool 185 ships on European, transatlantic and transpacific services, which Maersk Line says would save it $350 million a year. The proposal follows the rejection in June of a larger planned venture involving Maersk, MSC and France's CMA CGM by China's Ministry of Commerce on competition grounds.

Ship-level and container-level reliability Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) decreased in the second quarter of 2013, according to Drewry’s quarterly report Carrier Performance Insight, just published. Despite improvements in East-West trade reliability, the average on-time performance of containerships across all trades covered declined to 70.5%, down from 72.8% in the first quarter. The average on-time performance has now declined for two consecutive quarters and the latest result was the worst since the first quarter of 2012 (69.3%) and was 2.8 percentage points lower than recorded in the same quarter last year. Ever Salute, the last of ten 7024TEU S-series vessels being built for Evergreen in Japan, was launched on September 8 at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Kobe shipyard. The vessel was named by S S Lin (Lin Sun-san), First Vice Group Chairman of the Evergreen Group, while the ceremonial rope cutting, sending the ship down the slipway, was performed by Mrs Fusae Katsumata, the wife of Mr Nobuo Katsumata, President and CEO of the Marubeni Corporation. John P. Lauer has joined Matson Navigation Company as director, Transpacific services, for Matson's China - Long Beach Express. Lauer will lead Matson's U.S. sales efforts for its burgeoning China - Long Beach Express service and will focus on trade lane yield management and revenue enhancement strategies in conjunction with other Matson operations. He will report to Dave Hoppes, senior vice president, ocean services. Lauer comes to Matson with 20 years of sales experience, including a number of senior level executive positions encompassing maritime and logistics activities. Most recently, he was managing director, eastern region, for APL and APL Logistics at the NOL Group level. Lauer led these companies in reaching key performance sales and profit benchmarks.

Eastern Car Liner Ltd., Tokyo, and Rickmers-Linie, the Hamburg based breakbulk, heavylift and project cargo specialist, have concluded a deal concerning the transpacific westbound trade. ECL, which provides a monthly liner service from Japan to the U.S. East Coast, will deliver its multipurpose vessels after the end of each eastbound voyage to Rickmers-Linie, which will then charter the ships for transpacific westbound voyages and redeliver them to Japan. The cooperation will start from January 2006 and is set for a period of two years. The four 11,000dwt vessels, which are involved in this cooperation, come with heavylift gear capable of lifting loads of up to 120 tons. They were built between 1995 and 1998 and are equipped with ro-ro ramps.

P L Maneschi, Chairman of Lloyd Triestino di Navigazione SpA, has announced that with effect from 1March 1, the name of the shipping company will be changed to Italia Marittima SpA and will be known by the acronym ITS. Mr Maneschi said the new name Italia Marittima SpA reflects the company's ambitions to strengthen its Italian national identity worldwide whilst recognising almost 170 years' presence of Lloyd Triestino in the international shipping market. At the time the shipping company was established, on 2 August 1836 , Trieste and the port were part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and the original name of the company was Oesterreicher Lloyd. On 3 January 1919 , shortly after World War I, the name changed to Lloyd Triestino.
