Engine Issues Led to Tanker Striking Dock in Corpus Christi -NTSB

An incorrect solution to address a main engine start issue led to the contact between an oil tanker and a loading dock in the Port of Corpus Christi, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said Tuesday.The agency published a marine investigation report detailing its investigation into the March 15, 2021, contact of the oil tanker Riverside with Moda Ingleside Energy Center No. 4 loading dock near Ingleside, Texas. The vessel was carrying more than 717,000 barrels of crude oil and was bound for Lisbon, Portugal. No injuries or pollution were reported.

Army Corps Awards Contract for Corpus Christi Channel Improvement

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) on Friday awarded a $139 million construction contract to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC. (GLDD), to complete the third phase of the landmark Port of Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project (CIP). The four-phase infrastructure project will increase the Corpus Christi Ship Channel depth from -47 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) to -54 feet MLLW and widen it to 530 feet, with an additional 400 feet of barge shelves.Phase 3 will extend west of the La Quinta Junction through the Chemical Turning Basin in the Port’s Inner Harbor.

Port Aransas Ferries Begin Service

The first two of a new class of vessels designed by Seattle-based Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) and built for the Port Aransas Ferry Service went into operation on July 1. EBDG was selected by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Corpus Christi District, to prepare the design for this new 160-ft, double-ended ferry serving as a continuation of Texas State Highway 361 across the Corpus Christi Channel, between Port Aransas and Harbor Island. The new vessels, the Michael W. Behrens and the Charles W. Heald, are named for former directors of the transportation department.

Major Ferry Design Projects for EBDG

Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) has a number of major ferry design projects in progress with clients from across the country, including many repeat customers. In early 2008 the Texas Department of Transportation (DOT), Corpus Christi District selected EBDG to design a new 28-car ferry for service between Port Aransas and Harbor Island. This short route forms the continuation of Texas State Highway 361 across the Corpus Christi Channel. The multi-phased design effort began with a Design Study Report, which included a hull and superstructure configuration study, propulsion and steering configuration and cost studies, and a capital cost study. Follow-on phases include Contract Design, Bid Support and Construction Liaison.

Seattle-based Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) was selected by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Corpus Christi District, to prepare a design for a new 28-car ferry for service between Port Aransas and Harbor Island. This short route forms the continuation of Texas State Highway 361 across the Corpus Christi Channel. This multi-phased design contract was awarded in January 2008 with the first effort being a Design Study Report. The Design Study Report included a hull and superstructure configuration study, propulsion and steering configuration study, propulsion and steering cost study and a capital cost study. Follow-on phases include Contract Design, Bid Support and Construction Liaison.
