Seattle-based naval architecture firm Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) announced it is working with Miller Marine, a marine metal fabrication shop in Deltaville, Va., to design and construct a fully electric truckable tug.The versatile vessel is designed as a multi-functional utility boat servicing marine construction sites, tending dredges, tending buoys, short range ferry operations and other near shore operations such as crew transportation or line handling, the designer said.EBDG will incorporate an electrical propulsion system into Miller Marine's proven truckable tug design.

Dutch shipbuilder Damen's new Fast Crew Supplier (FCS) 7011, which will be able to carry 122 people in a single trip, hit the water earlier this month at Damen Shipyards Antalya, Turkey. The vessel, which Damen has dubbed "as a quantum leap forward in marine access solutions," has been described as a "cost-effective crew transportation alternative boasting robust safety characteristics."According to Damen, the vessel is the largest ever to have been launched in Antalya Free Zone.

Dutch company Ampelmann says it has designed its latest motion compensation access system, the S-type, as a cost effective and safe option in the transportation of workers and luggage to and from offshore platforms. The company, a provider of offshore access systems to the energy industry, is launching the new Walk-to-Work system as an alternative to using helicopters or baskets. In total, the cost of using the system will be around 30 perceent cheaper than helicopters, the manufacturer said. The S-type incorporates a lightweight system that uses a low amount of energy to operate.

German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz has secured a contract for the delivery of the Synapsis Integrated Navigation System (INS) to a Crew Change Vessel (CCV). The vessel is being built for the Danish shipping company Esvagt by Astilleros Zamakona Shipyard in Spain. The vessel, used for crew changes at sea, is planned to be delivered in the second quarter of 2017. Havyard Ship Design & Solutions AS, in accordance to the shipowner, is responsible for ship design and delivery of system packages.

The National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) today presented SEACOR Marine with the 2015 NOIA Safety in Seas (SIS) Culture of Safety Award and Safety Practice Award. This is the first time the same company has won awards in the same year. NOIA added the Culture of Safety award to the competition in 2014. SEACOR Marine won the Culture of Safety Award for their safety culture model which spurred a seven year trend of declining total number of Lost Time Incidents, Medical Treatment Incidents, and Pollution Incidents reaching Goal Zero for 2014 – that’s a Total Recordable Incident Rate of zero. The Safety Practice Award was presented to SEACOR Marine for their behavior-based safety program PAUSE, which is short for Prevent Accidents Use Safety Equipment.

Marine services specialists GAC & crew travel providers Griffin team up as G2 Crew Services Ltd. to integrate crew joining services. The joint venture combines the expertise of Griffin, which coordinates the on-time arrival of 750,000 crew each year, with the local knowledge, contacts and resources of the GAC network covering more than 1,000 ports around the world. G2 Crew Services aims to provide a total transportation package for crew members joining ships worldwide, including the 'last mile' between their arrival airport and their vessel.

The business of major British work boat company South Boats Special Projects Limited has been sold out of administration – saving a significant number of jobs on the Isle of Wight. A manufacturer of service vessels for the offshore wind power industry, which is based out of Cowes on the Isle of Wight, has been bought for an undisclosed sum by Alicat Workboats Limited. Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) has long been the leading offshore service vessel company in the Gulf of Mexico with more than 100 vessels offering supply, crew transportation, anchor handling and other services. Last year the company debuted the world's largest OSV, the 348-ft. Laney Chouest, an Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessel and the continuation of their 280-ft. series of supply vessels. By the end of this year, six of the 280-ft. vessels will have been built. Now the Galliano, La.-based company is looking to extend its reach internationally and has formed a new company, Island Offshore Shopping AS, to pursue offshore service business internationally. Island Offshore is a joint venture between Edison Chouest Offshore and Ulstein.

Lockheed Martin won a contract valued at more than $25 million to perform detailed design, construction, test and delivery of two Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) crew transport vessels that will provide service to Mexico’s national oil company, PEMEX. The Lockheed Martin design is based on its SLICE Small Waterplane Area hull form. The contract, awarded to Lockheed Martin by Hoteleria y Servicios Petroleros, S. A. de C.V. (HSP), calls for the delivery of two SWATH crew transport vessels that can safely and swiftly transport people and limited cargo from Ciudad del Carmen to the Campeche Basin Oil Field 90 miles offshore. HSP will operate the two Lockheed Martin SWATH crew transport vessels for PEMEX for five years after delivery.
