During the recent Paris Air Show, representatives of France and Italy signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) of the four Horizon frigates of the Italian and French Navies. The modernization will be entrusted to Naviris, the 50/50 joint venture of Fincantieri and Naval Group, and to Eurosam, a consortium formed by MBDA and Thales.The cooperation will cover the overall modernization of the frigates, with particular attention to the anti-aircraft defense system (including radars, weapons and their command and control), the combat platform and system, and the electronic warfare system which will be common to both nations.The Horizon frigates were originally built between 2000 and 2010 as part of a joint program between Fincantieri and the Naval Group…

China launched its first domestically built aircraft carrier on Wednesday amid rising tension over North Korea and worries about Beijing's assertiveness in the South China Sea. State media has quoted military experts as saying the carrier, China's second and built in the northeastern port of Dalian, is not expected to enter service until 2020, once it has been kitted out and armed. Foreign military analysts and Chinese media have for months published satellite images, photographs and news stories about the second carrier's development. China confirmed its existence in late 2015.

Surviving Australian veterans of the Battle of the Coral Sea will be flown to New York next month to commemorate the battle’s 75th anniversary. Staff Officer Heritage Research at the Sea Power Centre Lieutenant Commander Desmond Woods said Australian veterans of the battle were being sponsored by the American Australia Association. “The president of the Association, John Berry, is holding a dinner on board the Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Intrepid for Australian and US veterans,” he said. Lieutenant Commander Woods said the battle was a turning point for Australia in the Second World War. He said Australians would rightly honour Australian troops who in August 1942, were making their heroic stand, fighting and dying, at Isurava and on the Kokoda Track battlefields.

APL said today that 29-year veteran Bob Sappio, head of the shipping line’s PanAmerican Trades, will leave the company August 1 to remain in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sappio has been the head of APL’s Trans-Pacific Trade since 2003. He played a key role in establishing APL as the leader in the Trans-Pacific and in building its brand reputation for high-quality service in the industry, said Ron Widdows, CEO of parent company NOL Group. “I’ve devoted my entire career to APL – a company I have tremendous affection and respect for,” said Sappio, who joined the container carrier in 1982. Sappio guided APL to a top market share position in the route between Asia and the U.S. West Coast.

The addition of substantial new vessel capacity is widening the gap between supply and demand in the transpacific container trade, according to World Liner Supply, a quarterly reporting service of the ComPairData global liner shipping database. The results of the July 2001 World Liner Supply survey show that transpacific shipping lines have expanded capacity by 9 percent between July 2000 and July 2001, despite the slowdown in trade volumes. Total trade capacity has risen to slightly over 205,000 TEUs a week (equivalent to a yearly one-way capacity of 10.7 million TEUs) this month, from about 189,000 TEUs a week (equivalent to 9.8 million TEUs).
