While orders for new vessels have continued to decline worldwide in 2017, the situation in the German and European shipbuilding market is different, with an increase of incoming orders. As shipping experts state: “
this is not a trend but a snapshot, but it indicates a high competitiveness of the German shipbuilding industry, particularly on technologically advanced projects.”The global mood barometer of the maritime industry had reached its lowest point in 2016. From the abyss confidence and order have carefully increased

The global shipbuilding industry continued its downturn in 2015 with the number of new orders halved compared to 2013 level. The year 2016 is shaping up to be even worse. The “Big Three” shipbuilding nations China, Korea and Japan are major customers to the world leading maritime equipment and system producers from Germany. The fact that the domestic supply chain has been generating more than half of its sales within Europe will come in as an important stabilizing factor to weather the current storm: according to Clarksons Research

The German Shipbuilding Rebound

Tamsen Shipyard, Rostock: Minehunting vessels “Herten” and “Homburg” at Tamsen Shipyard.

German shipbuilding has made a significant turnaround. The country’s shipbuilding industry has seen increases in the number of employees, orders and deliveries compared to 2013, according to the German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association (VSM). The special shipbuilding sector drove this growth, as 20 of the 34 delivered new builds could be classified as high-quality special vessels or naval units. Although VSM announces its annual balance officially in May of each year, MR was able to obtain some early insights into the results.

The Art of Propeller Making

The mold is 1,100 degree Celsius liquid bronze is flowing into the prepared propeller mould.to be filled.

The world’s biggest propellers have their cradle in the North of Germany. MMG – Mecklenburger Metallguss GmbH – has manufactured for more than 65 years propellers for ships, including the biggest and fastest, in the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With the manufacture of propellers up to 130 tons, its manufacturing process requires a delicate hand and lots of patience. Spotlight on German Shipbuilding

The German shipbuilding industry has a world market share of around one percent. This is certainly in another league compared to China, South Korea and Japan, which divide the global shipbuilding pie of containerships, bulk carriers and tankers among themselves. But the German shipyards are on top in Europe. Here, around 90,000 people in the shipbuilding and supply industry are employed, and the German maritime cluster remains in strategic and symbolic importance. Aside from the Norwegians

German Shipbuilding Prospects are Fair & Partly Cloudy

There are few maritime sites as spectacular as seeing a newly built cruise ship, in this case Celebrity Reflection, make the journey from the Meyer Shipyard, Papenburg up the river Ems to the North Sea.

While economies across Europe have essentially bumbled, stumbled and fumbled in the wake of the global economic meltdown, Germany has remained comparitively strong. Despite the general migration of shipbuilding to the Far East, we decided to check in on the current status of this proud nation with a strong maritime heritage. German shipbuilders concentrated in 2012 on building cruise ships, megayachts, freight ferries and additional high-value, specialty ships. In total, nine German shipyards across 12 shipbuilding sites supplied 21 sea going ships with a total tonnage of 473,700.

Insights with an Kees Pilaar MD, Blohm + Voss

It could be argued that running an efficient, safe and profitable ship repair yard is one of the most difficult of all maritime jobs. First and foremost, unpredictability – in terms of planned and actual workload, as well as the very nature of the job themselves – is a recurring theme. Maintaining experienced staff in times good and bad; keeping ahead of evolving regulations, as they pertain to the local environment and the global ship market; and weathering the inevitable influx of cut-rate competition from emerging nations are but a sampling of the issues ship repair managers face every day.

At the same time, our regular customers are now again ordering not only in the newbuilding segment but precisely also in the retrofit area,” said Dr. Alexander Nürnberg, Chairman of VDMA Marine and Offshore Equipment Industries, at a late 2011 press conference held in Hamburg. The German maritime economy is an essential industrial sector, which — particularly in the rather

SMM Set for Hamburg

At the beginning of 2008, the order book was estimated by the British shipbuilding market experts of Lloyd's Register - Fairplay (LRF) at 10,055 ships ordered, and 329.7m gross tons (GT). By the beginning of July those figures were up more than 10 percent to 11,200 newbuildings and 363 million GT â€“ a new high. So the maritime equipment suppliers among the total of 1,950 exhibitors from 55 nations will have full order books to show at SMM 2008. This premier fair of world shipbuilding will for the first time occupy all eleven exhibition halls of the New Hamburg Trade Fair at the 23rd shipbuilding, machinery & marine technology, international Trade Fair Hamburg, to be held from September 23 to 26, which means more exhibition space than ever before, at 87,000 square meters.

German Marine Equipment Industries: Expansion to Protect World Market Position

German marine equipment suppliers are staying successful. Surveys of their industry association, the VDMA (German Engineering Federation), resulted in new record figures: in 2007, the sales achieved €11.9 billion with now 76,000 employees, making over 13.8% up on the previous year. The export rate was 73%. The sector could thus maintain and expand its world leading role for high tech systems for shipbuilding. 58% of the German suppliers expect the order inflow in home trading still to increase in 2008, pushed by the still extraordinarily high capacity utilization of the German shipyards. But the effects of the global shipbuilding boom can mainly be seen in the foreign markets.

Marine Finance Briefs

Slovenian shipping firm Intereuropa and port operator Luka Koper canceled a planned merger because the government was demanding the right to veto any management decisions in the new firm. The two companies had planned to merge on July 1. The state owns 51 percent of Luka, while Intereuropa is privately owned. The state's equity in the new company would have been 35.7 percent. "There will be no merger under such conditions where the government would have the right to veto practically every management decision," Radovan Vrabec, Intereuropa's deputy chief executive, said. He said the two companies would be ready to continue merger talks if the government eased its demands. Vrabec said the two firms would not suffer short-term damage due to the failure of the merger.

Q&A: Q&A with Hapag-Lloyd Chief Superintendent Engineer Klaus Marek

Q: Does Hapag-Lloyd only operate shipping vessels? Marek: Hapag-Lloyd today is a global logistics company that offers its customers the complete range of transportation options to help them better manage their supply chain activities. Our 40 state-of-the-art container ships primarily service the crucial East-West trade routes around the globe. These container ships dock regularly at the most-important ports of the world. Q: Which shipyards do you prefer to contract? Marek: As a rule, we advertise for bids internationally. Unfortunately, from our perspective, German shipyards are not competitive in our line of business. For the past 15 years we have been ordering ships exclusively from South Korean manufacturers. We started with Samsung, but then chose Hyundai to build our last eight ships.

MAN B&W Win Engine Orders for Container Vessels

. The MAN B&W Diesel Group has won orders for engines from the successful 48/60B and 58/64 medium-speed series for eleven new container vessels at three Chinese shipyards. The recently ordered diesel engines are intended for the propulsion of container feeders from the German shipping companies Werner Bockstiegel, Hermann Buss and Peter Doehle. To date, a total of 101 MAN B&W engines, at a capacity of approx. one million HP, manufactured at the Augsburg location, have been ordered from China; 48 engines at a capacity of 400 000 HP during the course of this year alone. This gives the MAN B&W Diesel Group a dominant market share in medium-speed propulsion engines in China. These eleven engines will propel feeder vessels at a capacity of between 900 and 1 100 containers (TEU).
