GD Electric Boat Gets Submarine Repair Contract

General Dynamics Electric Boat Corporation has been awarded a US$15,000,000 cost-plus-fixed-fee modification to a previously awarded Navy contract to provide non-nuclear submarine repair work on Groton-based submarines under the New England Maintenance Manpower Initiative (NEMMI). 12th International Submarine Races Announced

The Foundation for Underwater Research and Education (FURE) announced that the 12th International Submarine Races (ISR), a biennial engineering design competition, is scheduled to be held the week of June 22-26, 2013, at NSWC Carderock Division in West Bethesda, Md. The Foundation supports the ISR during the two-year process to design, build and take part in the human powered submarine competition. FURE’s objective via the ISR is to raise interest and participation in engineering education and to increase competence and awareness among ocean engineering students. This will be the 12th in the series of alternate summer races that test the creative skills of young engineering students from colleges, universities and technical and high schools from throughout the world.

Conference: A Look at a 200-Ship Navy

The U.S. Navy currently possesses approximately 280 ships, less than half the number during the Cold War. Between likely budget cuts, the increased cost of shipbuilding, and continued de-commissionings, the long-term outlook is that the fleet will continue its decrease in size, perhaps reaching as few ships as 200. "Allowing the current U.S. naval slippage to continue will result in a combat fleet of a size we haven't seen since 1911," said Seth Cropsey, Hudson Institute Senior Fellow and former Deputy Undersecretary of the Navy. New Sub Named USS John Warner

The secretary of the Navy announced that the next Virginia-class attack submarine will be named in honor of recently retired Virginia Senator John Warner. Warner retired Jan. 3, 2009, after 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The USS John Warner, honors Warner's lifetime of service to the nation and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Sen. Warner's career in public service began in Jan. 1945, the last year of World War II, when he enlisted at the age of 17 in the U.S. Navy, where he earned the rank of Petty Officer 3rd class. In the Fall of 1949, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve. At the outbreak of the Korean War in Oct. 1950, he volunteered for active duty and was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps and served with the 1st Marine Air Wing as a ground communications officer in Korea.

Corps Gives Final Approval to Columbia River Channel Improvement Project

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today announced that Major General Carl A. Strock, Director of Civil Works, has signed the Record of Decision (ROD) for the Columbia River Channel Improvement Project. Construction of the navigation improvements and associated ecosystem restoration features may now proceed after a cost-sharing agreement is signed. Issuance of the ROD -- a written public record under the National Environmental Policy Act explaining why the agency has decided upon a particular course of action - clears the way for the Corps' Portland District to begin work improving the federal navigation channel that stretches 103 miles between the Pacific Ocean and Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash.

MACSEA, Electric Boat Sign Development Agreement

MACSEA Ltd, a provider of software agent technology for prognostic machinery health monitoring, has signed a Co-Operative Research and Development Agreement with Electric Boat Corporation (A General Dynamics Company) of Groton, Conn. The goal is to further develop and demonstrate advanced technology for real-time maintenance decision-making in support of a minimum manned, highly automated and networked information infrastructure on future Navy ships. Key technology development areas include wireless sensors, neural network-based diagnostics/prognostics, and intelligent software agents. Todd Pacific Shipyards Enters Contract with Electric Boat

Todd Pacific Shipyards Corporation announced today that it has entered into a contract with Electric Boat Corporation of Groton, Connecticut to support their work on Trident submarines. During the period from May to September 2003, Todd Pacific completed planning and preparation work for Electric Boat under a contract valued at less than $200,000. Todd Pacific has begun work on a follow-on contract to fabricate components and to accomplish associated steel outfitting, project management and quality assurance functions. This contract is associated with the refit work being accomplished by Electric Boat on the USS OHIO (SSBN 726) at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

Electric Boat Corporation, Groton, Conn., is being awarded a $149,359,918 cost reimbursement modification under previously awarded contract (N00024-02-C-2901) for the conversion of USS Florida from SSBN 728 to SSGN 728; and conversion installation planning for the conversion of USS Georgia from SSBN 729 to SSGN 729. refueling overhaul being done at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Work will be performed in Norfolk, Va. (58 percent); Quonset Point, R.I. (30 percent); and Groton, Conn. (12 percent), and is expected to be completed by September 2007. AES wins Navy Contract

Atlantec Enterprise Solutions has received an SBIR award from the U.S. Office of Naval Research for its proposal entitled "Connector Architecture for CAD and CAM Systems." In this project Atlantec-es will work with Electric Boat Corporation, Groton, CT and Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG in Germany to develop an open connector architecture that decouples CAD and CAM software applications. The solution promises to dramatically reduce implementation costs and provide greater flexibility when selecting best of breed CAD and CAM systems. It will also simplify and streamline the information infrastructure typically required to support shipyard production processes.

Walpert Appointed SCA Director Emeritus

The Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) selected Harvey B. Walpert to be the first ever Director Emeritus of SCA in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the maritime industry. Bruce Croushore, Vice President of Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc. of Mobile, AL and past Chairman of SCA, presented the award during the SCA Fall Meeting in Amelia Island, FL on September 29, 2005. Mr. Walpert’s shipbuilding experience includes 22 years at Electric Boat Corporation, a division of General Dynamics, and 22 years at Halter Marine Group (currently VT Halter Marine, Inc.). He has served in his current position as a Senior Defense Advisor for Bender for more than 5 years.
